NBC isn’t staying friends with The Enemy Within. The network has cancelled the freshman drama series so there won’t be a second season coming for 2019-20.
A psychological thriller, The Enemy Within stars Jennifer Carpenter, Morris Chestnut, Raza Jaffrey, Kelli Garner, Cassandra Freeman, and Noah Mills. The character-based drama centers on former CIA operative and now infamous traitor Erica Shepherd (Carpenter) and FBI Agent Will Keaton (Chestnut). In order to apprehend a looming threat, Keaton must tap Shepherd’s expertise, even though she’s serving a life sentence in a supermax prison.
The first season of The Enemy Within averaged a 0.74 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 4.40 million viewers. The defacto series finale aired on May 20th.
Compared to the other scripted NBC TV shows of the 2018-19 season, the series ranks 10th in the demo and seventh in total viewers. Based on the rankings, it would seem like the series would be renewed but the ratings trended downward as the season progressed. Considering that The Enemy Within had The Voice as a lead-in, NBC execs were likely not satisfied with the show’s low retention rate either.
Today, the Peacock Network also cancelled The Village and Abby’s TV shows.

I can’t believe this show has been canceled. You TV bigwigs never give shows a chance. I think the concept of The Enemy Within was so different and compelling. Shame on you!!!

Very much enjoyed The Enemy Within. One of the best written, unique and attention grabber in years on tv. Finally, a great thriller adventure drama in the mode of the iconic FBI type shows, with a personal story and a wrongly convicted hero as in ‘The Fugitive’. Certainly hope another cable network or streaming service picks this up. It will be highly appreciated by many and maintain a long-term following.
I’m TOTALLY bummed out by the news that NBC has decided to cancel *The Enemy Within*! The show was really good, I made sure there were ZERO interruptions while it was on, because we never wanted to miss so much as a furtive glance or furrowed brow from Erica Shepperd when she was thinking &/or plotting. The few small *issues* the show had seemed to be as a result of a SMART, fast paced show having been produced and filmed on a (clearly) somewhat low budget. I am about FINISHED with NBC, and the other networks if they cancel shows like NBC does. No matter the show and how many millions watch, all the networks CARE about is the ALMIGHTY $$$$$$$$!!!!! What can we the viewer do? Nothing! If the networks don’t make the MONEY they want, there is no hope for we the average viewer, especially those that don’t fit the demographics that drive the networks to make their ALMIGHTY $$$$$$$$!!!!!
