When The Event was being promoted last summer, the producers made a point of saying that the series would be different from ABC’s failed FlashForward series. It turns out there were more unintentional similarities than they would have liked. Like FlashForward, NBC’s The Event has been cancelled after one season on the air.
The Event follows Sean Walker (Jason Ritter) who’s investigating the mysterious disappearance of his girlfriend. He slowly begins to uncover a huge cover-up that’s beyond belief. Others in the cast include Sarah Roemer, Laura Innes, Ian Anthony Dale, Scott Patterson, Clifton Collins Jr., Taylor Cole, Lisa Vidal, Bill Smitrovich, Zeljko Ivanek, and Blair Underwood.
The serial drama started out with healthy numbers on September 20th, registering a 3.6 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 10.88 million viewers. Unfortunately those digits started to fall immediately. The series lost 19% of its demo viewers in week two and another 17% in week three. From there, things basically just got worse and worse.

NBC announced that they were putting the TV series on hiatus over the holidays and indicated they would give it a relaunch in early 2011. That’s never a good sign and it certainly didn’t help the ratings. The Event lost more than 26% in the demo between its last episode in November 2010 and its first in March 2011. The ratings stabilized but not at an acceptable level.
The Event currently averages a 1.8 in the 18-49 demographic and 5.72 million viewers. As poor as that is, the average is only that high because of the early season numbers.
It’s no surprise that NBC has decided to pull the plug. There are two episodes remaining in the series and thankfully they’ll provide some sense of closure for the devoted fans that hung in there.
What do you think? Why didn’t The Event survive? Why did so many people bail on the series, even before the long hiatus?

We love this show!!!! Can’t wait to see the other episodes! If NBC doesn’t show send me the episodes to watch personally! My wife and I got hooked to it!
From Africa…
La series es la mejor trama de ficcion , intensa en todo
Es lamentable su cancelacion todos los personajes muy buenos y la verdad merecia una opurtunidad de continuar .
really I see no reason why nbc cancelled event ..watched the first episodes ..it was really fantastic show ..pliz prdce season two…
We LOVE this show! LOVE it…it is the best show on television.
We would watch it every single day. The life stories of theBraverman family makes me laugh and cry on every single episode. It is such a heartwarming tv program. What a shame and huge mistake this cancellation would be by NBC.
…Maybe another network will create such a show…to which I would not have a problem nor any pity on NBC. Such a disappointing network decision.
Just started watching the event and Wow!! So disappointed.I can’t believe this show was cancelled. One of the best shows in many years! Jason Ritter is excellent. Incredible cast! What were you people thinking? Big mistake. HUGE
My husband and I have been watching The Event on Netflix and we love it. I’m really mystified as to why NBC would cancel the show. And then they leave those stupid reality shows on. I really don’t care what those people are doing. If I want to see reality, I’ll go watch it from my front door. Idiots.
I think it’s simple; the show didn’t make it because people lost interest in it having to wait a week for the next show. I recently watched “The Event” on Netflix, and it was totally different…and ALOT…better being able to watch w/o waiting a week between shows. The episodes did not end in very good spots, and people gave up. It would be so much better as a mini series or movie. Just saying…
I agree totally much more enjoyable watching back to back then week to week it’s a shame because season 2 would have been great and would have liked to see where they went with it
I thought The Event was wonderful. Really enjoyed it. Thought the Roberts girl was smokin on fire hot. Too bad. Stupid NBC.
I just watched The Event on Netflix and loved it! Was disappointed to see that one season was IT! Why do they cancel some of the best shows??? Would even like to see them bring this one back.
I first saw the first episode on tv and remember liking it but also remember not catching it the net week, possibly because of the slot change that viewers mentioned about. I just finished watching the first season on Netflix and LOVE IT! I definitely believe that the networks do purposely jinx certain shows for their own personal reasons. If you have a show that premieres with 11million+ viewers, why make any times lot changes or not make the right promotions for it? I don’t believe that the show was to complicated or confusing for viewers like critics say, there… Read more »
Sincerely its just the best, don’t see any reason why the Ev€NT season 2 should ‘nt be!!!!
I jst finished the series it needs season two to create more interest
I don’t think people bailed on the show like they are saying. NBC and the rest of the broadcast stations just need to change their seasons. No one watches television in the summer because everyone is out vacationing. Seasons should be around when people actually stay in and home ,like the winter time and fall.
This was one of the better shows of the past few years, it should have lasted.
If people would quit watching all the stupid “reality” shows the networks at least would HAVE to come up with shows to entertain us…again.
They’ve just started to air this in Belgium and I got hooked. The first episode was a bit heavy with all the jumping forward and backward between the past and the present. My husband gave up on it because of this, expecting it to be another Lost (which, IMHO, because too chaotic… We quit after a few seasons…). However, the following episodes had less of those flashbacks (a short one now and again to explain something works fine).
So, yes, I AM disappointed there won’t be any more seasons…
Did not even know the show existed. After reading a few of the comments, I can understand why it may have been canceled. If there were time changes, date changes, etc., it is very frustrating when you are expecting to see a show you enjoy and instead there is a sports game or presidential speech (this happens way too often). The show is very entertaining. I could see with some help, it could be a similar 24 or Lost, but unfortunately you network people end up not giving the right shows a chance. There is also other competition out there.… Read more »
I agree. ,I’m still so disappointed that the show ended. I am apprehensive to try any more.
