As expected, ABC has cancelled The Gates after one season on the air. The ratings certainly didn’t dictate a second season and a couple weeks ago, series star Frank Grillo said that he’d heard unofficially that the show wouldn’t be back.
Though even actress Lindsay Lohan wanted to see it return, it’s now been confirmed that The Gates has indeed been cancelled. Some of the people connected with the show have tweeted about the series’ passing.
From the show’s Twitter feed comes, “We would like to thank our followers for sticking with us through this great journey.”
Gates creator Richard Hatem wrote simply, “Thanks to everyone who loved it. DVD set to be released…someday?”
Consulting producer and writer Robert Hewitt Wolfe tweeted, “Thank you to #TheGates fans, crew & cast for a great run. It was a blast. Seriously some of the best fans ever.” He later posted, “4 sale, lux devlpmnt/incrprtd town w/ upscale owners, prvt police/fire, exclnt school, occasional mysterious death”
Colton L Haynes wrote, “Was a great/fun experience and thk u all for coming along for the ride!. He followed that up with, “THE GATES cast and crew: thk u all for the good times! Learned alot and had a great summer with u all! Cheers to the future!” and posted this photo with #ripBrettCreski. Wolfe responded, “Sob… Too young!”
James Preston looks forward to the future, tweeting, “No worries gates fans follow us on to our new exciting roles!” Travis Caldwell echoed that sentiment, saying, “its all good more to come from all of us !!!”
Justin Miles wrote, “We gave em a hell of a run, though…” Janina Gavankar feels similarly, saying, “Sad. But we’re incredibly proud of what we made.”
Young McKaley Miller tweeted, “thank you guys for all the support!! seriously, y’all are awesome!! #TheGates is officially over, but it was such a great experience!! TY :)”
Andrea Powell wrote, “Thanks for all the love, fans of #TheGates. We’ll miss you! :-*”
Rachel Dipillo wrote, “We had a fun ride on The Gates. Love everyone I worked with and can’t wait to see what you do next! #RIPLEXIEWADE”
Grillo tweeted, “Thanks to all of you for supporting us. It made the whole thing worth it. Lots more fun stuff coming.” Grillo also said that he’d share what would have happened in the second season. After son Charlie is saved, Nick and his family would have stayed in the Gates community. The Radcliffs decide to take a break from one another. Leigh becomes the head of the police and Nick takes over the Gates board and oversees the community.
What do you think? Are you sorry that The Gates won’t be back for season two? What would you have liked to see happen?

I don’t know what’s more disappointing…that the show was cancelled or that the show was cancelled on such a cliffhanger…this is just another case of network TV canceling another “cult” program without giving it a chance! Jeers to ABC!
What is wrong with ABC????? How dare you do this and cancel this show with a cliffhanger!!!!!! I agree with the other comments: Why don’t you cancel the reality shows because they are crap!!!!!! ABC just don’t want to pay the actors!!!!!! I am sick of you putting on shows and we have to pay cable just to watch it clearly and then you cancelled it!!!!
I can’t believed that the showis not returning for another season! The show is great, it’s really sad that the network does not see the potiential of a great show in the making. Hopefully ABC will reconsider.
wtf I hope another station picks up the show and puts it in abc face. Loved the show abc can suck my remote!!!!
It was really disappointing to learn that The Gates was not returning for Season Two. Season One left me on the edge of my seat waiting to see what happens in Season Two. I hope that someone will reconsider and bring it back somehow. This series had just the right ingredients; a little bit of everything. I looked forward to each episode from day one. It’s was not fair for the series to be cut off right at it’s peak.
I loved watching The Gates! I am so disappointed to learn that there will not be a season two. I hope you will continue on DVD or another station. ABC why do you always stop the good shows?
I RARELY WATCH TV BUT I WATCHED YOU GUYS FROM THE BEGINNING AND I LOVED YOUR SHOW! GOOD LUCK, HOPEFULLY ANOTHER STATION WILL PICK UP WHERE YOU LEFT OFF. OH AND TO ABC YOU SUCKKKK!
My husband and I watched it all the time and loved it. Sorry to see it go. Wish it would come back. That simple.
I started wathcing with my mom in law after we moved back to states from Japan! My hubby is a Marine and doesnt like the “Twilight” type stuff but he watched 2 shows and was addicted!!! I LOVEEE this show! It had a great set up too for a second season! PLEASE reconsider, atleast bring it to a great end with a movie….SO SAD ABC! You had a keeper here!
That sux that you guys took this show off the air 🙁 It was a great show and I am very dissapointed that you guys took it away. Why all the good shows why not the reality crap, take that away
ABC ALWAYS DO THIS ****
We are a semi-retired, church-going, normal couple who watched every episode and loved the show. Please reconsider and bring it back. We like the fact that it wasn’t overy gory, but was an interesting interaction between regular folks and the supernatural.
At least, do a final movie that wraps it all up and allows the Chief of Police and his family to resolve their situation – after some good conflict, of course.
This TOTALLY STINKS!!!! My son and I watched the entire season without missing a single episode!!! Why is it all the good shows get cancelled by ABC??? Totally disappointed fan! 🙁
I personally was a true follower of the gates and enjoyed season 1. I never missed an episode and definitely loved the acting of rhona mitra. I would’ve liked to see what happened to the police officer’s son after the young lady brought him back alive within the underworld. I forgot some of the actors names but trust me “I would love to see a season 2.” If that happens please let me know as soon as possible. Good luck ABC and i’m sorry you won’t be back. I’ll keep my fingers crossed. David B.
the show seriously needs to come back, it was a great show! I recorded and watched every episode with my kids.
The Gates was a wonderful series but ABC does not let new series develop a following. Like Fast Forward and Defying Gravity it will pave the way for other neat shows. ABC would have canceled Star Trek after nine or ten episodes. So would NBC, which put KINGS on Sunday night, when the Christian target audience was in church. Networks want instant gratification. You can’t accomplish that with series that by their very design must build an audience over a period of a season or two. Also, it does help if the episodes are not interrupted for several months at… Read more »
