Not counting the Prison Break revival, FOX introduced 10 new TV shows during the regular 2016-17 television season and cancelled seven of them. Now they’ve picked up Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane’s new space adventure comedy drama. Can his animated series success translate to live-action sci-fi? Will The Orville TV show be cancelled or renewed for a second season on FOX? Stay tuned.
The Orville stars MacFarlane, Adrianne Palicki, Penny Johnson Jerald, Scott Grimes, Peter Macon, Halston Sage, J Lee, Mark Jackson, Chad L. Coleman, Norm Macdonald, Larry Joe Campbell, Victor Garber, Brian George, and Rachael MacFarlane. In 2417, Ed Mercer (Seth MacFarlane) is promoted to captain The U.S.S. Orville, with the assistance of First Officer Kelly Grayson (Palicki). Unfortunately, she’s his ex-wife, and her presence acts as a bridle on his enthusiasm. Whether facing off with the Krill, a dangerous alien race, or attempting rescues on behalf of the Planetary Union, the human and alien crew still must deal with their mundane issues and each other.
The ratings are typically the best indication of a show’s likelihood of staying on the air. The higher the ratings (particularly in the 18-49 demo), the better the chances for survival. This chart will be updated as new ratings data becomes available — usually the next day, around 11:30am EST/8:30am PST. Refresh to see the latest.
12/8 update: You can see the latest night’s ratings in context.
Note: If you’re not seeing the updated chart, please try reloading the page or view it here.
Note: These are the Live + Same Day Ratings which include “live” viewing plus delayed DVR viewing, up until 3am local time that same night. Ratings marked with an “*” are the fast affiliate ratings and will be updated with the Live+SD numbers when they are made available. Typically, networks get paid for C+3 ratings which includes DVR viewing within three days of the original airing when commercials are watched. Those numbers are rarely released to the press.
What do you think? Do you like The Orville TV series? Should it be cancelled or renewed for a second season on FOX?
11/2 update: The Orville is renewed for season two on FOX. Details here.
I really love the Orville. Seth MacFarland pays homage to Star Trek and it’s delightful! Liam Neesom was in one episode and Charlize Theron in another. Warp speed never looked so good.
The Orville is awesome! Great spoof of Star Trek but also has great creativity with lots of humors!
The Orville is getting stale way too fast, that last episode made STD look good. I dunno, maybe I expected too much from it. Sadly, I’m dropping it.
🙁
Please keep The Orville.
People SHOULD watch this show! Even if you don’t like it, leave it on because it needs ratings.
I’ve watched three episodes so far and plan to watch from this point forward. Not all the jokes are great, but some are hilarious (especially involving Isaac). We all know it’s not part of the Star Trek universe, but the point is, it feels more like ST as we’ve come to know it than Discovery does. Think of it as a less-professional and less-serious crew aboard this ship versus the Star Trek series. I sincerely hope it doesn’t get canceled.
I agree it does feel more like star trek than discovery. It feels like trek just with more humor and popculture references. I really hope they leave it for a second season, but this is FOX we are talking about….RIP Firefly,Space Above and Beyond, and Alien Nation.
I love Seth Mc’s other work, but this show is unwatchable. It can’t decide if it wants to be a comedy or drama. The young female officer that had “the con”, abandoned her post without transitioning command and ran? The ex-wife as XO? Arguments in front of crew? This is horrible as a drama, but seriously not funny as a comedy, because the jokes suck. Pick one, and own it Seth. If you pick comedy, get funny.
We are enjoying the show. Hope fox gives it a chance.
Absolutely love the show!!!
This has to be the worst show on TV.
The family loves this show!!!!
I can’t watch this show. It’s just not funny or interesting. Fox will probably renew it because they’ve got nothing else.
As far as the show goes one of the best things on TV if you get all the inside jokes and get over that Seth MacFarlane made it it is quality entertainment
I hope it flops. Tired of fox canceling shows after they’ve moved them around from different days and then blaming the show for not maintaining a regular audience. Can’t believe they cancelled one of my favorite shows for this garbage.
Honestly, I Think most of the backlash is just cuz people are already anti-Seth Macfarlane. But The show really is better than the Discovery Trek show (I know its not Trek, but its better than STD). Nothings been done like it before, And I think The Orville has a real chance to succeed with the unique drama / real-life comedy element.
