Well, there’s one singing competition that won’t be back next season. The Sing-Off has been cancelled after three seasons on the NBC.
Hosted by Nick Lachey, this TV series seeks to find the most-talented a capella singing group in America. Judges have included Ben Folds, Shawn Stockman, Nicole Scherzinger, and Sara Bareilles. The judges decide who advances to the finale and the final winners are determined by viewer votes. The champs take home a Sony recording contract and $200,000.
The Sing-Off began in December 2009 as a short-run series with just four episodes. It did reasonably well — averaging a 2.3 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 6.9 million viewers — so the peacock network brought it back for season two.
It returned in December 2010, expanded to five episodes, and the ratings rose 26% — to an average of a 2.9 in the demo with 8.6 million viewers.

NBC decided to take another chance and give The Sing-Off a two-hour timeslot on the fall schedule with 11 episodes. That gamble didn’t pay off and the ratings were much lower. By the end of the season, The Sing-Off averaged a 1.5 in the demo with 4.56 million.
On our NBC Ratings Report Card, which measures the relative demo performance of TV shows on the network, The Sing-Off has an “C-” grade. The network has now cancelled the show.
NBC could have brought it back for another limited run, perhaps over the summer or in December but were likely hesitant to flood their schedule with yet another singing/talent competition. America’s Got Talent has been very successful for them over the summer months and NBC plans to run two cycles of The Voice next season. There just wasn’t a place on the schedule for The Sing-Off any longer.
What do you think? Do you think NBC should have kept The Sing-Off, perhaps run it in December? Are you sorry to hear that it’s been cancelled and won’;t be back for a fourth season?
I loved this show!!!! There are not very many good wholesome shows out there for families to watch anymore. This was a perfect family show. I am very disappointed!
Because of the other singing shows? Please! The sing off is on its own! Everything else is a cheap knock off of American Idol with celebrity judges. TV is getting worse and worse.
I’m incredibly disappointed that The Sing Off has been cancelled. My husband and I have thoroughly enjoyed this singing competition. This show show cased voices that made the music (which is amazing). Its a shame that instead of marketing the show better (perhaps by showing the auditions), they gave it a total of about 30 episodes, with little to no marketing. I wish they would get rid of the ridiculousness that has become of the other singing competitions…. BOO to NBC! Bring the show back!
THE SING OFF WAS THE GREATEST SINGING COMPETITION ON TV. IT SHOULD HAVE NEVER BEEN CANCELLED
I THINK THAT THEY SHOULD HAVE CANCELED WHO’S GOT TALENT AND LEFT THE SING OFF ON IT WAS MUCH MORE CLEANER THAN THE OTHER SINGING SHOWS.
I loved this show. It was quality not just stupid fighting and put downs. The judges really knew what they were talking about and gave good suggestions.
Really?! Cancelled?! This was an awesome show and so different from all the others. You should really think about bringing it back. It helped introduce another genre of music to the world. I think NBC needs to market it better to get a few more people hooked like I was.
I loved this show, and taped them to watch repeatedly. Just check all the viewings on you-tube to see how popular it was. Please, bring it back!!
I loved this show! It was one of the only singing shows that showcased a different genre of music! I am so sad this has been canceled. This was creative and original unlike the other shows that all have one contestant.
That is terrible news, this was the only singing show I liked and watched, this is one disappointed fan
Really? Sounds like NBC, go ahead and kill a real creative thing, again. These groups all displayed real talent. Having to make their own arrangements and do material intended to have instruments, while keeping your audience. America does Have Talent and it was on real display on Sing Off. I guess they just want more Simon and Brittany types making fun of and tearing people down. NBC, you never cease to amaze at what you kill and what you air. No wonder your ratings tank. No one expects you to commit to anything. Learn from your USA Network brand and… Read more »
3rd season didn’t satisfy NBC ratings??? Fine, go back to the 2nd season shorter version but don’t dump a really good thing. This offered exposure to young and older groups, all genre of music and was enjoyed by every member of the family. Revise , don’t write it off!
No way! My family not only loved watching the Sing Off, we would tape it and rewatch it. Please bring it back!! Such great talent will be missed. 🙁
I am truly going to miss the Sing Off. I have never been one to watch singing competition shows, but the Sing Off had true talent and was much more exciting than watching a bunch of solos. I am sorry that NBC has decided to cancel the show.
THIS SUCKS!!!! I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THE SING-OFF!!!! Thanks for ruining my fall NBC. BRING IT BACK PLEASE!!!!!!!!
