Though there was talk that the Wayward Pines TV series could return for a second season, FOX seems to have killed that idea. The network has revealed that next week’s installment will be the last one — the series finale.
On Wayward Pines, Secret Service Agent Ethan Burke (Matt Dillon) drives to the bucolic town of Wayward Pines, in search of two missing federal agents. One was a former partner and they once had an affair. A truck slams into his car, he wakes up in the local hospital, and things start to get really strange. The cast of this thriller series also includes Howard, Melissa Leo, Carla Gugino, Toby Jones, Shannyn Sossamon, Charlie Tahan, Reed Diamond, Juliette Lewis, and Tim Griffin.
The series is currently FOX’s second-best performer of the summer, beating out shows like So You Think You Can Dance, Bullseye, Boom!, Are You Smarter Tahn a 5th Grader?, and animated Golan the Insatiable. Wayward Pines is averaging a 1.09 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 3.79 million viewers.
Based on the season’s performance, FOX execs were considering renewing the show for another year — most likely with a different cast and characters in the same mixed-up world. However, last night’s promo clearly notes that next week’s episode marks the end of the show. Take a look:
For what it’s worth, back in January executive producer M. Night Shyamalan was open to a second season but was cautiously optimistic. He said, “If the opportunity is there. We won’t do it unless it’s organically and creatively correct.”
Executive producer and showrunner Chad Hodge recently told TVLine, “The promise that we’ve been making — which is that there’s a beginning, middle and end in these 10 episodes — is a real promise and we deliver on it. Could there be a possibility of a Season 2? Sure, of course, and you’ll see a window to that, but it also is a complete ending as it is.”
What do you think? Do you like the Wayward Pines TV show? Would you have watched a second season?
7/24 update: Though FOX advertised the last episode as the “series finale”, talks of a second season continue.

Me and my partner are absolutely gutted there is going to be no second season. Fantastic show, keeps you guessing at every episode and has got most people that I know in the UK talking and raving about it. Haven’t seen anything so good (or looked forward to Thursday nights) for so long. Please bring it back!!!
This show is not getting “cancelled”. It is a limited run mini series. The only thing worse than a show you like actually getting cancelled is watching a show you like get ruined by greedy network executives trying to milk an extra few seasons out of something that wasn’t meant to go that far. They are actually doing this one right and I am happy to see it. Time to find my next binge-worthy show.
The show is top 3 on TV right now from all networks…..gotta have a 2nd season
Huge disappointment that there is no season 2. Best sci-fi series in a very long time. In fact there haven’t been many sci-fi series in a long time worth watching. Need to keep same characters though!!!!!
I really love the show. I read the three books also. The possibilities are endless on which direction this TV show could go. To the people that read the book I think you understand what I mean. I am extremely disappointed that season two will not happen. I sent an email to the sci-fi channel requesting that they pick up the series. I know that I’m only one voice but I was hoping that they would at least consider it. Perhaps I if others do so it might help. Just a thought.
Definitely worth more seasons!!! I’m tired of watching a GOOD Tv series, not reality show, only for it to be canceled! I’d rather not have watched if I knew this would happen. Very disappointed, Fox always gets it wrong!
At the beginning they said it would be a 10 show run with a beginning, middle and ending. So ending Wayward Pines after 10 shows is not a surprise in the least. A mistake would be a bad season 2, none of the current actors would return.
This was only supposed to be a mini series from the start. I think it was very good. I hope he writes more of these!!! Also I’m tired of all of the reality shows too!!!!
I would love a 2nd season!! It was riveting! Don’t stop it!
I see this show as mini series based on Blake Crouch’s works…it needs an ending…can’t wait to see it…BTW it better explain how Mrs. Burke was abducted in real time, not Filcher time, by the first sheriff….
Best show I have seen in a long time. Good tv is so hard to find these days! No question this one is a keeper. Bring back for season 2.
I was hooked on this show via on-demand. Binged for three days. Great acting and surprising plot twists. I am pleased that It will have a ending that follows the books. It was like watching a 10 hour movie that was really good.
Typical FOX. They only like shows with a single digit IQ.
What a shame there will be no Season 2.
Look at Firefly. Still the best damn show ever. They killed it too. Stupid FOX.
I would watch another season but if they were going to recast the show with different people I would be less inclined to watch it. It has been a great series and nice to see Matt Dillan in something again. I can’t wait until Thursday night.
Why do they always cancel the shows I love??? I really hope FX or AMC pick this up. It’s worth more seasons!!!
Very disappointed. was looking forward to it after I seen the trailers. then I thought it was a little weird but I gave it a chance. now I look forward to watching it every week! its the only thing on my DVR that I have totally caught up on!
Real shame no season 2. Very different and suprising plot, not something you see much these days. Please reconsider Fox.
