It’s a bittersweet time to be an X-Files fan. The FOX series’ 11th season premiered on January 3rd, but star Gillian Anderson has said it will be her last.
Anderson has played the show’s co-lead, Dana Scully, since the sci-fi drama debuted in 1993 and has been part of every season. David Duchovny, who plays Fox Mulder, didn’t appear in all season eight and nine episodes of the original run. In the latest season, Anderson and Duchovny are joined by Mitch Pileggi, William B. Davis, Annabeth Gish, Bruce Harwood, Tom Braidwood, and Dean Haglund.
As reported earlier, Anderson has said season 11 will be her last on The X-Files. Series creator Chris Carter addressed the news of Anderson’s departure by saying he hasn’t even considered the show without her:
For me, the show has always been Mulder & Scully. So the idea of doing the show without her isn’t something I’ve ever had to consider.”
As of now, FOX has not renewed the series for a 12th season, but would you watch without Scully? Without Mulder? Tell us what you think.
I’d still watch it. They could do it with Agent Einstein and her partner.
I would want to see the new team on an FX series with 10 episodes per season, and I think FX already airs reruns of the series and films anyway. One of the biggest issues with the 90’s series was the never ending plot regarding Mulder’s sister. The stand alone episodes were usually more interesting, but even then, there were a few not so good ones. With Miller and Einstein, they have creative room to break away from that stagnant cycle without entirely dismissing it. Having a shorter basic cable run would make a new series appear to have quality… Read more »
I agree ! Mulder and Scully have a huge space in my ethos and heart. But Einstein and her partner would add new story arcs , characters with an updated atmosphere . The same genre is important.
It´s like honey and bees, it comes together. “Unthinkable”
I would still watch with different “replacement” actors. I’ve that many times in the past with favorite characters who had to be replaced due to death, illness, or just plain studio preference. Look at the James Bond films. My greater concern is always the writing. If the story sucks it doesn’t matter who is acting the part.
I was a huge fan for years but this new season has been a disappointment to me. I watched the movie, all the episodes but something is confusing from last season to this season. I am not giving up on the show and I hope both actors stay but would watch a few more regardless.4JtU8
Mulder and Scully ARE THE X-FILES. Beside their unbelievable chemistry they are the only people who could continue to solve X-files. I realize they are probably tired of playing these roles but those of us whom have watched since day one Friday nights at 9pm on FOX feel so strongly that this show is everlasting. The stories that could be written with relevance to today are out there. Please reconsider continuing for another season. I just LOVE the show.
The two of them, Mulder and Scully, are the reason I don’t watch the show. I’d probably watch it if you replaced them with actors.
These kinds of things are insulting. WE put you there, you’re DONE when nature takes it course. More money and likes will ALWAYS bring people back so this this type of thing is just (and ALWAYS is) pure silliness.
The last season SUCKED. Only the comedy episode was BRILLIANT (I love how that episode polarized fans). The ending was just mind blowingly insulting…
I’ll prob check this out but I’m not rushing…
I guess I’ll have to see the 11th season’S conclusion, but I’m a die hard fan. I loved this first episode this week, although I’m still wondering what happened to Mulder after he was left for dead on the bridge – how come he’s now still so solid? And what did Scully see looking at the light above her on the bridge? Mulder and Scully are such an item, the essential part, the foundation of the series, and the ongoing tension between them is a suspense in itself. I’d give it a chance, there is so much left to be… Read more »
Suzanne, I have to agree with you on how the ending of Season 10 doesn’t mesh with the beginning of Season 11. I wonder if the latest episode was trying to back tract and fill in additional details of what happened in last season’s finale. I’m confused. I’m ok with the old presentation of the show. I think that’s kind of cool.
The opener to this seaosn also had me hella confused after the way last season ended on such a massive cliffhanger. I realized through the course of this season’s premiere that the later moments last season may not have actually happened ‘yet’ after things scully was saying. We’ll have to watch more unfortunately to see where it’s taken. But suddenly the smoking man being alive was news, that’s what made me wonder really not to mention it didn’t seem as if all hell had broken loose society was still functioning. I wonder if some intention in the writing was changed… Read more »
Would watch if it was brought into modern times with real FX graphics – the Twilight Zone method is out of date, and never seeing the aliens or dealing with the problem is the same as watching Days of Our Lives – you go away for a year and not miss anything. If I was writing the check it would be a real power couple [he actually has a good body, and she has red hair and proper breasts] that sleep together from time to time – have a real bond – sex and nudity – while really dealing with… Read more »
Two words: seek help. 😉 lol
I would absolutely watch additional episodes and seasons with Lauren Ambrose & Robbie Amell in featured roles. I would prefer, however, the focus begin with weekly self contained episodes of unexplained events rather than long convoluted story arcs.
I am interested in seeing where the show would go if either of them left the show. Gillian was gone most of season 2 on maternity leave and then David was gone most of season 9 because of a disagreement with Fox. The X-Files always had great story lines and I really do believe that the show can go on with either one of them gone or if they decide to past the torch on to someone else like Lauren Ambrose‘s and Robbie Amell’s characters.
Good reminder Kim. Guess us fans we can “survive” without either one of Mulder or Scully, but I’d really rather not…
I probably would watch a season 12 without a Mulder or Skully but it wouldn’t be the same. It is probably best if they have a solid ending to Season 11 and the whole X-Files series.
The X-Files has dragged on too long. The conspiracy arc has gone on too long , I miss the individual stories
I would most definitely watch without Chris Carter!!
I second that! They attempted to do the show w/o Duchovny & Anderson before & the ratings slipped. And quite frankly, Chris Carter is ruining his creation believing that he has the talent to guide the show in a more creative direction!
Carter should open the door for more experienced sci-fi writers, directors & take a back seat. Instead, his grip on his cash cow is deteriorating a series that fans have wanted so much for a long while.
Anderson is after a challenge, not a check. I’d say thank you to her & good luck on future projects.
Good comments. I could myself imagine some good story arcs involving alternative reality and parallel universes. Would be interesting to see Mulder and Scully in a parallel universe or software domain where they don’t particularly like each other. Give them some room to maneuver as artists.
There is no X-Flies without Mulder & Skully…….Some series must just come to an end and if they are not in Season 12 then dont do a season 12, you will ruin the show for the die hard fans. End S11 off with a scary finding that explains everything that has happened…… You might as well call it “The Truth Isnt Out there” without the 2 most iconic Characters on TV.
