In a somewhat surprising move, the alphabet network has cut a beloved family drama after five seasons on the air. Season six of Brothers & Sisters won’t be on ABC’s fall schedule.
Brothers & Sisters debuted in 2006 and revolves around the extended Walker family of Pasadena, California. The current season features a large ensemble cast that includes Calista Flockhart, Dave Annable, Gilles Marini, Luke Macfarlane, Matthew Rhys, Patricia Wettig, Rachel Griffiths, Ron Rifkin, and Sally Field.
The family drama was nearly cancelled last year but was ultimately renewed for an abbreviated fifth season. In light of some positive ratings, ABC ordered additional episodes, bringing the season total to 22 installments. Unfortunately, those ratings didn’t last.

The numbers slowly declined over the course of the season but really seemed to take a dip in the latter part of the season, just when execs were trying to figure out if it was worth renewing. Rumors started circulating that Brothers & Sisters would be cancelled and then there was word that ABC was considering an abbreviated sixth season to wrap things up.
In the end, network execs decided there just wasn’t enough interest in the show anymore and wanted to use the post-Desperate Housewives timeslot for a new series.
As a result, last Sunday’s season finale will end up being the series finale for Brothers & Sisters. It’s a sad and unfortunate end for a once popular series.
What do you think? Are you sad to hear that Brothers & Sisters won’t be back for season six? Was it time for the series to end?

I am so upset by this! This was by far the best show on television!
one of the best shows on TV. I agree that there are way too much reality shows. This was a great family drama along with some comedy. I loved the addition of Beau Bridges as Nora’s “lost love”. Wonderful. Maybe another network will bring it back since ABC is concelling all of it’s great shows and replacing with crap. Case in Point: All My Children is being cancelled after 41 years. I’ve been watching for 39 of those years (my daughter was just born then). It’s terrible! Wake up ABC!
I remember when family shows were on at 8pm and the “shoot ’em up bang bang” shows were on later so children didn’t see the violence. Sad that there aren’t more shows like Brothers & Sisters for families to watch together. Maybe scheduling is the problem and why great shows keep getting cancelled.
Can’t believed this show cancelled – loved it loved it loved it – looked forward to watching DH and B&S back to back every Sunday night. There are very few shows worth watching on tv as it is –
Soooo sad!!! I wonder how they get their ratings??? I can’t watch the show in the time slot it comes on but I record it and watch it the next day. So many people I know do the same thing.
Ugh. Why do networks keep doing this? Brothers & Sisters was one of the few shows I was actually excited to watch! Cancelling it and keeping Desperate Housewives was a stupid move.
What a HUGE mistake you are making. The storyline and acting on this show was brilliant. Not everyone likes all of these ridiculous reality shows. Here was a solid story with very fine actors and you blow it. I have been recording it on my DVD and watching it over each weekend. The same thing happened to Judging Amy which was also a wonderful family story…………no wonder TV is loosing their viewers. I am just reading more. The world is not just about teeny boppers and their taste.
Thanks ABC for once again showing your stupidity. Except for Desperate Housewives, there won’t be anything next season worth watching. CBS will continue to rule!
I, too, am so disappointed that this show was cancelled. I’ve always faithfully watched it, and the characters were dear to me, especially Nora. These days when every other show is a reality show, and there are very few quality things to watch, this one stood out. I’m very sad to see it go.
I CAN’T UNDERSTAND WHY ABC WOULD NOT AT LEAST WRAP UP A GREAT SHOW THAT IN THIS DAY AND AGE HAD MANY WATCHERS COMING BACK TO SEE WHAT WOULD HAPPEN EACH WEEK. THE SHORTENED SCHEDULE DID NOT HELP – BUT COME ON – LET THE WALKER FAMILY CLOSE THE BOOK NOT ABC FOR YET ANOTHER NEW SHOW…
ABC, get your act together and bring the show back!! What you’re going to go down the path of more reality tv. or stupid comedys….REALLY thats the way you wanna go???????????
The first real family show in a long time and it gets cancelled!! Have any of the exec. ever sat down and watched the crap thats on these days??
Sooooooooooo disappointed!! I thought tv was about entertainment, and not so much about $$…Well, I never really thought that, but this show had something and it was wholesome…..
Very shocked and sad that Bro & Sis has been cancelled. Always kept you wondering and waiting to see what was next.
I agree with the above comment!!! This was my most favorite show to watch, so emotion. Every episode and character was commutes to drawing you in. I will miss it.
This is the2nd show that i enjoyed wataching ABC has canceled without letting the ending play out…talk about a let down.
It is one of my favorite shows for my mom and I. There are sadly no good shows on any stations anymore. Super bummed!
I agree about the gay storyline. I have enjoyed Brothers and Sisters for years, but this year I came very close to turning it off because I became so frustrated with the gay issue being shoved down our throat. And this feeling can’t be blamed on my age. My children and their spouses both turned the show off because of this and they are in their 30’s. I believe Hollywood is trying to change the fabric of the country little by little. But there are many of us that are not going to buy it. Other than the gay storyline,… Read more »
