For years, some people have been asking, “When is Smallville going to end? Isn’t he Superman yet?” Well, the series ending is now in sight. But who’s decision was it?
When Smallville began, it revolved around Clark Kent (Tom Welling), a high school student who was discovering his super powers. As time has gone on, he’s learned how to use his abilities and is now balancing his heroics with his work at the Daily Plant newspaper. The show’s current cast includes Allison Mack, Callum Blue, Cassidy Freeman, Erica Durance, and Justin Hartley.
Last season, The CW network moved Smallville from its usual Thursday night timeslot to Fridays. The ratings understandably dropped quite a bit but the network still renewed the show for a 10th season. The renewal had supposedly been hinging on whether or not Welling wanted to keep doing the series.
The decision has now been made that season 10 will be the show’s last. The network was supposed to make an official announcement at the upfronts but Welling jumped the gun and told HollywoodLife at an event on Tuesday night. The actor also reflected on what he’s learned by playing Clark Kent for so long. He said, “Once you think you have perfected things, you’ve got to keep practicing. There is always something to learn! It works for me and it will work for others.”

It remains to be seen who made the decision to end the show. Did the network decide to cancel it or was the choice made on the production side? Unless Welling (who’s now 33-years-old) decided that he’d had enough, it likely comes down to a mixture of the two and simple economics. The show will have been around for 10 seasons, has gotten more expensive to produce, and doesn’t bring as much ad revenue anymore.
On top of that, there are certainly more than enough episodes to keep the show running in syndication for a long time. By the end of the show’s run, there will be enough installments for a station to play once a day for seven months without repeating.
By announcing the ending a year in advance, the network can promote Smallville’s season 10 as the last and the producers will have ample time to plan how they want to wrap things up.
What do you think? Are you glad that Smallville’s coming to an end or should it keep going? Anything you’d like to see happen? Perhaps Lex Luthor’s return?

ive grown up to this show and to see this end is just sad, they should not…i repeat….should not end smallville! they still have a lot of things to cover from the comics, they still have ways to go,especially since the super hero fad has come back the show will definately draw to more fans than ever! DONT END IT!
No! Smallville should change format for a season 11 to Metropoliss and have Clark Kent wear a uniform, glasses, fly and bring back Lex! TTom Welling are you out there, don’t stop at season 10 , go on to a show different format and still be Superman with new and old viewers alike who will watch your show ! Why leave when it’s getting better and a better ratings ! Wake up Welling and the C.W. Warner Brothers and smell the coffee! Why leave somthing that works and could go on three more years?
Damn, Damn, Damn ….I have been an avid follower since day 1 , 10 seasons is a very long time yet somehow always thought or rather hoped it would go on the last few seasons have been the best yet … I hope something happens in season 10 to alter this perhaps a “Metropolis” or Superman spin off…I enjoy the Justice League. But give us the chemistry between Erica and Tom any day with the mythos of Superman too keep it fully charged. Pathetic …I know it has not even ended , but its like a best friend got hit… Read more »
I beg to disagree, Lettie? When Lana Lang left Smallville, this was just a the beginning of Smallville…I grew tired of Lana Lang Lana this for 7 1/2 years…I loved the way Clark let go of the past when he placed Lana’s picture in his photo album as a sign that he is letting her go (in Rabid episode). They should have filled Lana with heaps of kryptonite 4 years ago and should have done these wonderful plots and storylines ages ago…but then again, better late than never. When Lana becomes a guest I am expecting Clark to say it to her… Read more »
okay now you are in aserious delusion and the fact that you wanted Lana to be OFF since season FOUR, just shows how you were truly a fan of SV…. SV is the EARLY years of Clark Kent and whether you liked it or not, lois lane does NOT belong to that period! heck, she doesn’t belong with Clark AND superman, IMO. she is part of the OLD myths,,, WE the new generation LOVED the new refreshing story of CLark Kent and Lana Lang. it just showed WHY these two belong together and no one else matches them! however, if… Read more »
LMAO!Producers and writers have better ways to explore and tell stories of Clark Kent in Smallville. Don’t take things literally. For all you know the title Smallville is metaphorical. In fact Lois Lane calls him Smallville in during Clark’s Superman years!LOL!Clana is the most boring for me…hehehe…dragged for 8 1/2 years because writers couldn”t find a way to get rid of the couple.Lois Lane must be in Smallville’s *cough* Superman’s life from beginning till end. Clana is archaic and long gone.LONG LIVE CLOIS!Woohoooooo!
I have really enjoyed Smallville over the years. I particularly enjoyed the love affair between Clark Kent and Lana Lang. I was sorry to see their love affair come to an end. ( I know that in the legend Lois Lane is the love of Clark Kent’s Life but in the Smallville version Clark would never have stopped loving Lana had she not been contaminated with kriptonite and forced to leave him). When the love affair came to an end it was, in my opinion, the end of Smallville: the early years. The series should have ended there. We all… Read more »
it should never end its a show dat should go forever who cares if hes 33 there other actors who in there 50’s nd still act age has nothing to do with looks like ur not a fan of smallville if u want it to end loser
I am really surprised at the people that do not want it to end!!! the show has been twisted in a weird way…. something that is irrelevant and inconsistent! I have watched it all, and to be honest I am disappointed at how it turned to be. it is even darker and more dramatic and really, nothing makes sense of how and why. no thanks, I think it is time to put this into sleep and move on. it did not offer anything for the past two years and all it had been around focusing on one plot that is… Read more »
are you stupid it should never end
It bugs me, but yeah, it should end. The guy’s 33 for pete’s sake!
But having said that I’ve been a loyal watcher since the beginning. Even made my own DVD box set 🙂
So yeah, it’s sad to see it go but I’d be even more disappointed if he didn’t get re-cast as Superman in a new series (or movie?) and take things up a notch.
i have loved and watched this show from day 1 it is the only season show that i have ever liked now your taking it away what kind of bull crap is that thats crazy now we dont get to see an ending or anything just the season finalley making us want to see what happens in season 11
SMALLVILLE SHOULD NOT END AT SEASON 10 I MEEN IVE BEEN WAITING WEN HES GONNA FLY BUT DOOOOO NOT END IT I LOVE DIS SHOW SOO MUCH I DONT THINK U GUYS SHOULD END IT AT SEASON 10 GO FOR A COUPLE MORE SEASONS LOLLLL IF ITS GOING SO WELL RITE NOW WITH SMALLVILLE WHY END THE SHOW KEEP GOING AT IT
No way Smallville should end in my opinion its the best season yet the effects are amazing and getting better! What empty minded money hungry producers mixed in here I belive you have faithful viewers just eager to see what the next seasons brings just as my self and family.
ugh! I think it is finally ending,,, it had been so hurtful at the end and twisted and lightswitched with no apparant reason…. the thing with this show is whatever is taking place right now is not a parallel to the myths whatsoever and it had made people fly the other way! Smallville was different because it did not discuss the superman and metropolis plot, which was a success, now it is another c grade replica of other shows that could not survive past season four with superman and metropolis at its heart! I think this show stopped giving something… Read more »
I think the progression of the story line had to end at some point… and 10 seems like a good number.
1st I would like it to be a great ending season and planning it a year in advance, I had better not be disappointed.
2nd maybe a spin off as the real superman? maybe… 🙂
NO FREAKING WAY… I DONT LIKE THE IDEA WHY THEY JUST LEAVE AT SEASON 10.. I MEAN I LOVE THE WHOLE THING FROM THE BEGINNING WHATEVER WHAT PEOPLE SAY SMALLVILLE IS THE BEST SHOW I EVER WATCH
