For the previous season, CBS introduced nine new scripted shows during the regular 2018-19 season. The network cancelled five of them and renewed just four. How will their new programming do in the ratings for the 2019-20 season? Stay tuned.
CBS shows this season (so far): 48 Hours, 60 Minutes, All Rise, Blue Bloods, Bob ♥ Abishola, Big Brother, Broke, Bull, Carol’s Second Act, Criminal Minds, Evil, FBI, FBI: Most Wanted, Game On!, God Friended Me, The Greatest #AtHome Videos, Hawaii Five-0, Love Island, MacGyver, Magnum PI, Man with a Plan, Mom, NCIS, NCIS: Los Angeles, NCIS: New Orleans, The Neighborhood, SEAL Team, Survivor, SWAT, Tommy, Tough As Nails, Undercover Boss, The Unicorn, and Young Sheldon.
There’s lots of data that CBS execs look at when deciding whether to renew or cancel a TV series but ratings are typically the biggest piece. Here’s how the network’s shows are doing so far.
Note: If you’re not seeing the updated chart, please try reloading the page or view them here and here.
A couple of notes about these charts:
These figures are updated automatically as new ratings are released. The averages are based on the final national numbers (live plus same day viewing), unless marked with an asterisk (*). For technical reasons, I have to resort them manually so feel free to let me know if I missed something.
Keep in mind that the demo numbers are typically what’s most important to advertisers. Therefore, that’s how the networks measure success. Advertisers pay more for ad time on a show that has a higher demo rating. Because older viewers don’t count? No, it’s because younger viewers watch less traditional TV and are harder to reach.
Demo numbers are typically reported using the 10ths decimal place (2.4, for example). In the averages, I’m using an extra decimal for easier ranking. The networks take into account when shows air on Fridays and Saturdays, nights when TV viewership is lower.
What do you think? Which shows are you rooting for? Which one isn’t as big a hit as you thought? Are you hoping any series will get cancelled to make way for something else?
I am completely shocked that God Friended Me has been cancelled. In a sea of shows that lack much needed hope and humanity, this was one that I loved and by the comments I am not alone. Perhaps the ratings were not enough. Perhaps the world has lost touch with the essence of self. And CBS apparently has no issue taking what little decent programming there is to make a buck rather than helping to possibly influence the greater masses that goodness still exists. Instead they keep Evil? I am one person who can’t really influence the masses. But what… Read more »
If showing Saturday night movies. Please show Out of Africa movie……love FBI And Swat and Blue Bloods
I can’t believe Tommy, S.W.A.T., & Evil didn’t rate higher! I don’t watch live but I pay to have CBS streaming with no commercials, ten bucks a month so I don’t think advertisers should have a say on what shows we pay for or there should be a different rating system to count in all ages & types of viewers. There’s a package people pay for that’s streaming with commercials for like 6 bucks & they don’t count either because it’s not live! All of those viewers plus like someone else pointed out, the DVR viewers, a lot of shows… Read more »
Please renew Tommy
One.of the few shows on tv that demonstrates women in business without.support onnthe workplace
Sorry to hear the shows are rated by the people that watch them live. We always record ours so we can watch at our convenience and I’m sure we’re not the only ones. I’m sure the numbers that are recorded are not accurate. Seems there could be a better way of counting ALL the viewers not just the ones watching live.
Please continue God Friended Me. There is so much violence. Those of us over 49 would like a say too. Why keep Evil and Swat
alas God Friended me goes the way of the Dodo. CBS doesn’t really make sense, but if they renew Tommy and Evil and cancel God friended next, I’m done CBS. It was hard enough watching the dumpster fire of a line up you call TV shows, but atleast God Friended me kind of passed like it could be from a good TV channel, not network TV that may as well have the executives from Coca-cola write the scripts, cause those Ad companies run the show on network TV.
My husband and I are so disappointed God Friended Me has been cancelled. We need hope and wholesome entertainment now more than ever. I only hope CBS will reconsider!
I never watched a full episode until Sunday, I noticed it’s pretty much Quantum Leap. Instead of one man leaping into other people to help them it’s one person getting told to help someone. Neither know how to help in the start and wind up getting the job done in the end. You could possibly fill the void with that show? Scott (whatever the last name is) Bukuka or something like that is the main character. The guy from NCIS:NOLA and one of the Star Trek shows that wasn’t that good. He’s a good actor in my opinion. I know… Read more »
If this is a repeat I apologize but while writing a previous comment it suddenly disappeared from my screen. I’m so upset GFM has been cancelled. It (plus Young Sheldon) are two of the best family friendly shows on CBS. Please reconsider it for next year! Lord knows we need something these days to feel good about rather than all the other junk on TV. And why stop at 49 for ratings? I’m retired and have a lot more buying power now than I did at 49 when kids were still at home or in college. Why not do what… Read more »
I can not believe you are canceling God Friended Me and keeping a show like Evil. We need some shows that are not cruel, violent. What shows do you have that do not have violence, sex, or undesirable behavior? We need more positive role models not less. CBS has always been my favorite network that will not continue!
Shows I watch on CBS (in order of preference):
NCIS
Hawaii Five-0 (ending)
NCIS: Los Angeles
SEAL Team
MacGyver
Magnum PI
SWAT
Bull
Blue Bloods
NCIS: New Orleans
Young Sheldon (renewed)
FBI
FBI: Most Wanted
You all cant think of new shows so you screw up ild ones by remaking them.into your stupid idea of comedy
Please don’t cancel God Friended Me. People over 49 should be included. Too much death! Please don’t cancel an uplifting and great show. Please.
You cancel God friended me with 6 million viewers and renew the show Evil with 3 million viewers? How can we convince you that you are making a mistake
Don’t cancel god friended me it’s one of the shows not filled with constant violence twice as many viewers as swat yet you keep that???
Don’t cancel “God Friended me” cancel Tommy! Tommy makes me sick. That show is so formulaic even for CBS. Edie falco is a goddess, but the other actors belong on daytime soaps from the 90’s.
I agree. My husband and I love God Friended Me.
