Last season, CBS introduced only seven new shows during the regular season. They cancelled three, renewed three, and one (Supergirl) moved to The CW. How will their new programming do in the ratings this time around? Stay tuned.
CBS shows this season (so far): 2 Broke Girls, 48 Hours, 48 Hours: NCIS, 60 Minutes, The Amazing Rice, The Big Bang Theory, Big Brother, Blue Bloods, Bull, Candy Crush, The Case Of, CBSN: On Assignment, Code Black, Criminal Minds, Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders, Doubt, Elementary, The Great Indoors, Hawaii Five-0, Hunted, Kevin Can Wait, Life in Pieces, MacGyver, Madam Secretary, Man with a Plan, Mom, NCIS, NCIS: Los Angeles, NCIS: New Orleans, The Odd Couple, Pure Genius, Ransom, Salvation, Scorpion, Superior Donuts, Survivor, Training Day, Undercover Boss and Zoo.
There’s lots of data that CBS execs look at when deciding whether to renew or cancel a TV series but ratings are typically the biggest piece. Here’s how the network’s shows are doing so far.
Note: If you’re not seeing the updated charts, please try reloading the page. You can also see them here and here.
A couple of notes about these charts:
These figures are updated automatically as new ratings are released. The averages are based on the final national numbers (live plus same day viewing), unless marked with an asterisk (*). For technical reasons, I have to resort them manually so feel free to let me know if I missed something.
Keep in mind that the demo numbers are typically what’s most important to advertisers. Therefore, that’s how the networks measure success. Advertisers pay more for ad time on a show that has a higher demo rating. Because older viewers don’t count? No, it’s because younger viewers watch less traditional TV and are harder to reach.
Demo numbers are typically reported using the 10ths decimal place (2.4, for example). In the averages, I’m using an extra decimal for easier ranking. The networks take into account when shows air on Fridays and Saturdays, nights when TV viewership is lower.
What do you think? Which shows are you rooting for? Which one isn’t as big a hit as you thought? Are you hoping any series will get cancelled to make way for something else?
Salvation, please. And renew the show, too ;o) Very interested to see where the story goes. Love Santiago Cabrera BTW
Why do you cancel all of the good dramas like Ransom & Criminal Minds BB?
Is it to make room for more mindless reality programs and game shows? Most adults would rather watch a good drama. If ratings show otherwise, it just means there is nothing else on and that is why your reality and game shows are getting hits!
Sorry to see you are cancelling Ransom and Criminal Minds Beyond Borders. All I can say is why. Does everything have to be violent on CBS? Oh, I also liked Last Man Standing. Much better than the ones you left on. Is it too conservative for you?
LMS was on ABC, not CBS.
I really enjoyed Doubt and am sorry you have cancelled it.
Salvation
I can hardly wait for each weeks episode, It is awesome!
What the actual ****, The Great Indoors has legit perfect ratings, why on earth would you cancel it….
Please Quit Asking the 18-49 demographic Because they have Their Heads up their ASS
ZOO IS AWESOME & if they aren’t watching this show, We’ll I just said where their brains are.
Please renewed Zoo another season I definitely love it James Patterson books and even though really late on Thursday night at 10 but still catch it really gotten better.
Please, please change your mind about cancelling ransom, I found it to be one of the best new shows last season.
Me TOO
So disappointed that Ransom was cancelled. It was a good drama without a lot of extreme violence.
So upset to see Ransom cancelled…..I guess CBS isn’t my favourite network!!!
I cannot believe Kevin Can Wait and Man With a Plan were renewed and Great Indoors was cancelled! Kevin and Man are same old same old and Indoors was fresh and hilarious with its send-up of millenials.
Even the ODD COUPLE was funnier than hell!!!!
That’s WHY it was cancelled! Not original enough for the millenials who are pampered and entitled and who NEVER watch the news except the night shows (i.e. Steven Colbert). We, over 50 are more and more discriminated against on TV and Netflix, HULU, etc. Odd, isn’t it? That these networks should ignore the ONE demographic that actually has money in their pockets JUST to bring in the much more cash poor millenials. So incredibly small thinking – and offensive!! And they wonder why their numbers, over all, are falling. We, over 50, vote by turning off these newer, idiot “fresh”… Read more »
THis is a good point. those that love colbert dont watch news. They watch latenight shows. sad isnt it.
Why isn’t Steven Colbert cancelled. Give him a show to critize others and be political—thought he was a late night host–don’t care to hear his personal views
That’s what many people are asking about that late night show. Because the way he creates the atmosphere of “Hate” now before you start saying I’m not being fair. Hear this, please when I watch a show I want to get away from the politics and enjoy the rest of my evening before I go to sleep. I don’t want to hear somebody get up in rent and rave about something that is just trying to get your attention in the ratings to go through the roof. I know many people like to show because it is in your love… Read more »
Great review! I 100% agree with you. Read my review above. I had not read your’s before I posted it!
I cannot believe you kept shows like; Undercover Boss, Elementary, Kevin Can Wait, Code Black, Survivor, these shows are boring. Superior Donuts is discusseding, everytime I eat one it makes me physically ill. Hawaii Five-O, it doesn’t even remotely come close to the original show. I watched it for three months, not one of them had enough guess work that I had not figured out the endings. The other shows I kept falling asleep. But the one show I Apsolutly loved & is Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders, & you cancel it. Well I will not be watching CBS at all… Read more »
I agree with you about almost everything except Code Black. I think it’s one of the best shows on TV! Also? Check out NCIS: LA. I hated it for years until the Kensington/Deeks arc started. I watched one episode about 2 years ago and was totally wowed by some very healthy and great changes they made to the show and is one of the very few shows on ALL of TV that continues to explode in the ratings! I also love Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders. The first few episodes were a bit rocky, but then it took off. Too late… Read more »
Please keep criiminal minds beyond borders on air. It is a wonderful show and I really like the cast members
The 18-49’s are the freakin idiots that determine what We watch
Exactly. How dumb are these networks? They have dumbed down TV for the millennials (even my millennial children agree with me on this one and refuse to watch ANY TV). But my most disgusting issue about shows for the last 2 decades has been the insertion of one-sided politics into EVERY SHOW!! You do NOT represent about 70% of the population today and the more the networks insert foul language, political opinions, and certain sociological changes INTO the shows, the more we walk away. We are hard working people who are SICK AND TIRED OF BEING PREACHED AT ABOUT STUFF… Read more »
