¡Hurra! According to the Hollywood Reporter, Netflix has renewed its first Spanish-language original series Club de Cuervos for a second season.
The series, a Mexican dramedy from Gary Alazraki and Michael Lam, focuses on the personal drama and politics that follow the death of a local football club owner. Its first season premiered on August 7, 2015. The second season will begin filming in 2016, and star Luis Gerardo Mendez will be an executive producer.
From The Hollywood Reporter:
Club de Cuervos has helped the streaming service establish itself in new markets — particularly Mexico. Further working in Club’s favor is that 25 percent of the show’s viewers are U.S. subscribers.
Sources say the streaming service has also upped the show’s production budgets as it looks to capitalize on Mendez’s popularity as arguably Mexico’s biggest box office draw. The actor starred in Nosotros Los Nobles, which grossed more than $28 million to become Mexico’s second-most successful film of all time. (He’s also the face of Pepsi and AT&T in Mexico.) For his part, Mendez recently wrapped his English-language debut in Netflix’s original feature Rebirth as the streamer looks for other opportunities for the actor.”
