Angels Memorial is closing its doors. CBS has cancelled its Code Black TV show after three seasons. Creator and showrunner Michael Seitzman has already confirmed the Code Black cancellation. Although the production utilized the extraordinary measures of amputating some original series regulars (Raza Jaffrey and Bonnie Somerville) and grafting on a big name (Rob Lowe), the patient eventually succumbed to acute ratings anemia.
A CBS medical drama, Code Black stars Marcia Gay Harden, Luis Guzmán, Boris Kodjoe, Harry Ford, Benjamin Hollingsworth, William Allen Young, Emily Tyra, Noah Gray-Cabey, Emily Alyn Lind, Moon Bloodgood, and Lowe. The story unfolds at Angels Memorial Hospital in Los Angeles — home of the busiest, most notorious ER in the country. The high patient volume dwarfs the resources available to the exceptional staff — creating a condition known as Code Black.
According to Seitzman despite the cancellation, the third season should continue to air in its regular timeslot. Because he expected the there would be no season four, it seems the team wrote the season three finale to serve as a series finale. Check out what he has to say, below.
Code Black: A Look at the Ratings
The third season of Code Black, which just kicked off on April 25th, is averaging a 0.71 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 5.448 million viewers. Compared to season two, that’s down by about 26% and 9%, respectively.
Of the 27 scripted CBS TV shows we’ve been tracking during the regular 2017-18 television season, Code Black ranks 23rd in the demo. That number only rises to 21st, when we sort by average total audience. In other words, the cancellation makes business sense.

One reason, IMO, is the loud background music playing over crucial dialog in an already noisy scene. I have said this in countless forums over the entire run. Otherwise, a wonderful, great show! Love Marcia Gay Hardin!
very upset that code black is being cancelled….love this show…look forward to the show each week….has a great story each week….this is what real life is like in medicine….it shows that those stupid reality shows are more important….those shows are staged and they are awful…why would I care about other people and what they do or say….they have the money to do this stupid stuff and get away with it…..give us something with a story and things that really happen……the actors do a great job…..keep it on….
SOOOOO Disappointed, finally we have a fabulous drama & it’s at it’s end. Yet, the stupidity of Brother House continues!!!! Only 3 years and you are giving up. The show was fast paced and so loved. Each week wasn’t fast enough to see the next show. Fabulous show, PLEASE consider continuing!!!!!!!!!!!!!PLEASE!
I am so sad to watch this show cancelled. Fantastic show! ABC, not sure I want to watch anything on your channel, you cancel all the good shows, they never last!
I am so sad this series is ending!!! By far my favorite. I really hope the last few episodes give us good closure…
It’s sad that the 18-49 demographic is so widely used. I don’t think that clearly represents America’s true purchasing power any more.
I really enjoy code black and hate to see it go. It is hard now days with dvrs and on demand. A lot of people watch later. I have to get up early so 10pm is hard for me so I record it. Please reconsider for those of us who do watch. Such great characters and storylines!!
Why does everything I like get cancelled? Code Black has a good story line and kinda tugs at your heart sometimes. Why do they keep the cruddy ones? Powers that be, bring it back!!! Thanks
Why does it seem that every show I have ever liked gets canceled?!?! I loved Code Black, it is the first and only show to catch me hook, line, and sinker. I hope they pull an American Idol- type stunt and realize that this show needs to continue.
I love medical shows and Code Black is the best one since ER. The cast is wonderful and the story lines are great. This show has heart! What is wrong with you at CBS?????

I am really sad to hear of one more good solid show going down in flames. I’ve always questioned the idea of having a drama series on in summer when all many are not watching TV every night! Sorry to lose another good one
BIG MISTAKE!! This is definitely my very favorite CBS show. I just feel there may be some “politics” being played with the ratings. Just sayin’!!
