Starz is saying goodbye to Counterpart. Deadline reports the network has cancelled the TV show after two seasons.
The sci-fi drama centers on a low-level bureaucrat, Howard Silk (J.K. Simmons), who toils away in relative obscurity at a United Nations spy outfit based in Berlin, Germany. The cast also includes Olivia Williams, Harry Lloyd, Nicholas Pinnock, Nazanin Boniadi, and Sara Serraiocco.
A Look at the Ratings:
It’s not entirely surprising that Starz has cancelled Counterpart. The series has taken a major dip in the ratings during it second season. So far, the show is earning an average rating of .04 in the 18-49 demo and only 225,00 viewers. That’s a nearly 50% drop in the ratings since season one.
However, while Counterpart won’t continue on Starz, there is still some hope for fans. According to Deadline, the show’s producer is shopping it around to other networks.
What do you think? Have you seen Counterpart? Do you want a third season?
I watch all tv shows by streaming all seasons; I don’t watch them when they come out. I would pay to see any future seasons of counterpart. It’s worth paying for. High quality writing, acting and production. I am sure other people would also be willing to pay for more seasons of this show.
I found Counterpart to be absolutely fascinating. J K Simmons is outstanding in his dual performance making it very believable that he is two very different people. I will miss seeing where Season 3 might have gone. ☹️
I am deeply disappointed in hearing of the cancellation of IMO the best syfy offering on any TV network since FRINGE. Hopefully the outcry we’re already witnessing from fans of the show will also mirror what happened when Fox announced they were canceling FRINGE — the fans’ passion caused them to rethink that decision and at least gave the show one last season in which to finish out the storyline. Here’s hoping for that or more if someone like Netflix might also hear the fan’s outcry and pick it up for continuation. Lord knows Counterpart falls right in line with… Read more »
My wife love this show. Very interesting and great actors. We find it hard to believe it’s not being picked for third season. We will follow if it is picked somewhere besides Starz
Why was this show cancelled? My husband & I enjoyed the series very much. You had to think it through, as it was not always obvious, but we appreciated the intelligent plot and liked the challenge of keeping up and figuring it out. Hopefully the story will continue and the show will be picked up on another network. The ending of season 2 was so unexpected, we certainly would want to see more.
Yes!!! Please have more seasons if the writing stays as good!!!
Finally, I thought, Starz has given us an intelligent, creative and very interesting hybrid of science fiction and John LeCarre type screen spy fiction. The 18;49 year old demographic, to a large degree, doesn’t even fully use cable, anyway, so that sat is not useful. Starz – be bold in your programming. Plus, Counterpart viewers undoubtedly have way more disposable income than fans of “Transformer” level garbage that fills commercaial TV and cable.
This has been one of the most intellectually interesting and dramatically fascinating sifi shows or or movies I have ever seen—everything was first class intelligent entertainment. It’s a mystery to me how ratings were low for season 2. We can only hope the is picked up—-but that it doesn’t sink in quality.
Dajte nam još jednu sezonu, serija je odlična gledamo je u Srbiji
So VERY sorry to hear that STARZ has opted not to pick up Counterpart for a third season! It’s a series I looked forward to for many reasons: well-acted, well-written and challenging! Wow! A series that requires the viewer to have a brain, to concentrate and to think? And rewards that thinking? What a joy – quality programming that isn’t chewing gum for the eyes. What a shame that STARZ has so little foresight. Come on, you techies out there: can we not find a better/different way to measure viewership? At this point, just how outdated are the Nielsens? I… Read more »
I am sorry to see that STARZ not pick up Counterpart for another season. It is a great show, well acted and very interesting. Please bring it back. I am surprised with the ratings numbers being so low.
Really disappointed! Highlight of the season was learning how the split happened. Really hope I’ll see another season on another network.
So want a season 3!! When they counted viewers they didn’t count the rest of us – it’s a hard show to keep up with but so smart and we’ll written and acted. So much more interesting than easier shows. We’ll watch on whatever network picks it up!
I agree with you and would love a 3rd season
I LOVED this show (it’s worth joining Starz on Amazon just to get it). It’s the best thing on TV in ages as far as I’m concerned. (I extolled its virtues to everybody I met; I’m surprised it took an almost 50% dip in viewership – maybe because so few people get Starz?) Although they closed a lot of doors 😉 in Season Two, with this quality of writing, I’ll bet whoever picks it up could come up with something clever still.
I only signed up to Starz to watch “Counterpart!” I will make sure they know why I am choosing to cancel the extra expencse.. Thankfully they tied a nice bow on the last exposide. I too hope some other network will pick it up… Maybe Netflix?
