It seems that stakes and network executives can take a vampire down. NBC has cancelled the Dracula TV show after one season of 10 episodes.
NBC’s Dracula is a retelling of the classic Bram Stoker story. In London, Dracula (Jonathan Rhys Meyers) is posing as an American entrepreneur while he seeks revenge on those who cursed him. He doesn’t count on falling in love with a woman (Jessica De Gouw) who looks just like his deceased wife. Others in the cast include Thomas Kretschmann, Oliver Jackson-Cohen, Victoria Smurfit, Katie McGrath, and Nonso Anozie.
The show’s debut did respecatably for a Friday night show but dropped much lower in subsequent weeks. The first season averaged a 1.1 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 3.25 million total viewers.
Hannibal and Dracula are both produced under a unique deal that costs the network much less than other original drama series. Hannibal’s license fee is set to go down for season three so the network ultimately decided to renew that show and cancel Dracula.
It seems like Dracula’s studios could still potentially produce a second season for another outlet but there hasn’t been any news of that thus far.
What do you think? Do you think Dracula should have been cancelled or renewed for a second season? Would you follow the series to another channel or pay to see a second season?
I will follow Dracula anywhere they go. I cannot believe that NBC has failed to listen to their viewers. It is a slap in the face to fans of the show. It makes no sense for NBC to replace Dracula, on Friday nights when Grimm & Hannibal are scheduled, with a pirate show. This reeks of failure. What is their justification? We don’t like pirates!
URGH boooo NBC! You suck :(. Dracula should have been renewed.
Yes, it should have. A licensing fee is a poor excuse for canceling a show! Come on now! Bram Stoker versus a movie that went way beyond what it should have? Ugh. YES, a second season should have been announced! Doctor Lector can go eat humans on cable!
It’s hard to believe that NBC cancelled one of the best show on TV. As a senior citizen I have decades of TV watching and can say that Dracula was so above the usual stuff they pass off as entertainment. The acting, writing, costumes and sets were of a higher quality then network TV dishes out on a regular basis. If Dracula had been handle properly it could have been the next Sopranos
Why do they always cancel the good shows and keep the stupid ones. I really enjoyed this show. Hopefully another channel will pick it up
Yup, Dracula has been canceled. Bad news on Mother’s Day!. My only bit of fantasy, gone………So, funny; I watched Jonathan Rhys Meyers and the cast perform. It was my only personal bit of fantasy and happiness. I used it to escape a bad relationship and stress. It was just a small pebble of joy. Like my relationship, with my significant other, he got mad because I used his car too long to buy a dress for myself; my daughter and son in law are taking me to a real fancy place for mothers day. Yet, I don’t even have a… Read more »
Once again NBC has shown that their heads are up their butts! They cancel a good show like this, but keep that idiotic “About a Boy.” The movie was decent (when it came out 10+ years ago) but the show sucks. They are just pathetic .
I couldn’t agree more. They cancel the good ones and keep the dumb shows.
I agree with you. They keep rve stupid shows and always cancel the good ones.
I an glad they did keep Hannibal’s show at least.
I can’t believe they didn’t renew this great show!! I’m glad to hear Hannibal was renewed, but I probably would’ve picked Dracula if I had to choose between the two.
That’s a shame, I really enjoyed Jonathan Rhys-Meyers Dracula!
I just cancelled my pre-order of the series and unless anyone can tell me definitely that Mr. Meyers will get residuals off of it, it will stay cancelled. Now NBC is putting Rosemarys baby on. Been there, done that. Bore and yawn. NBC won’t get any of my money for MORONS who will produce Hannibal, who you say gets cheaper in the 3rd year, and they were both set up under the same deal. Doesn’t make sense, but then again, nothing NBC does makes sense, that’s why they are usually in last place. Money, or the lack there of, does… Read more »
one more comment, I would follow it to another network who is smart enough to pick it up. HBO etc. where are!? Mr.Meyers had signed on for years to do this program, and his loyal fans all over the world would have watched. NBC waited until it had finished in other countries before it announced it was cancelled! I hope everything NBC puts on fails. Its no wonder the ratings are always last. No one knows what they are doing!Showtime Where are you!? No NBC won’t get any of my money for its failures!
No, they haven’t waited. It’s about to premiere in all Middle East and North Africa on May 26 (OSN). They gave it a good time slot, Mondays at 9 pm just before Game of Thrones at 10 pm. Also in Germany, VOX has the show to broadcast later this year. So, I hope entertainment companies around the world to think twice before taking any NBC show. People don’t like to be fooled, nobody wants to get hooked to a show to see it cancelled, much less if it’s cancelled already. For some reason, the shows that do well internationally, normally… Read more »
this only goes to show what I already know. NBC IS RUN BY MORONS. I have just cancelled my pre=order of the series. Unless someone can show me that MR.Meyers get residuals off the show, then NBC will not get any of my money! A great actor like Mr. Meyers and all the other great actors and actress’ and the talented writers and creator, the great Cole haddon. Hannibal is less expensive now to produce than in the first year? That’s the reason you renewed it? Stupid reason. How about the dramatic content? And I’m tired of hearing it’s because… Read more »
I think it should have been renewed!! I love this show. Special effects were awesome, and the costumes, good acting and story plot. Such a shame-networks never listen to the people that watch the shows.
NBC apparently has a habit of canceling great programs despite their lack of judgement. Why kill great ones like Dracula but keep trashy ‘reality’ junk on? Stupidity is no doubt a normalcy there, like Leno was their big $ maker but fired him. Twice! How many times have they admitted in the past Jay was their top rated? One does NOT kill the moneymakers like NBC does. It will be it’s own downfall. Morons!
Booo! Other than Dateline, you’re dead to me NBC!
