What’s This TV Show About?
A Syfy drama, based on the science-fiction novels by James S. A. Corey (i.e. the pen name for authors Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck), The Expanse stars Steven Strait, Shohreh Aghdashloo, Dominique Tipper, Cas Anvar, Wes Chatham, and Frankie Adams. The story unfolds 200 years in the future, in a colonized galaxy, when two strangers are caught up in a vast conspiracy. Season three kicks off immediately after the events of the second season finale, with Earth, Mars, and The Belt at war. The quest to discover the secret of the protomolecule intensifies and every decision made risks the survival of the solar system.
Season Three Ratings
The third season of The Expanse averaged a 0.18 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 606,000 viewers. Compared to season two, that’s down by 3% in the demo and up by 8% in viewers. Find out how The Expanse stacks up against the other Syfy TV shows.
Although Syfy cancelled it, Amazon has saved The Expanse and ordered the fourth season which will debut December 13, 2019. Stay tuned for further updates.
Telly’s Take
Although it premiered with decent numbers for basic cable, it is still too early to use those ratings to predict whether Syfy will cancel or renew The Expanse for season four. Flying blind, I think it will score a renewal, but let’s see what happens as more ratings data rolls in. For now, I’ll keep an eye on the Nielsens and update this page with breaking developments. SyFy please go on with this great show. Haven’t seen anything better f0r a long time. Of course i will follow it, no matter who’s gonna go on with it. And i will be happy to support them.
So they cancel The expanse and we get The magicians instead. They cancel Dark matter and we get Killjoy. Are they stupid or drunk? The cancel best shows and keep what nonsense?

The Expanses is a fantastic show! Cancelling it is unwise.
I recognize the challenges the SyFi channel faces with keeping shows on for more than two seasons in the “DVR age”. But I cannot understand why they cannot develop other methods for viewers to support quality programming such as this over all the other mediocre content currently on television. This show was one of the few that had everything going for it and justified the SyFi channels’s reason for existing. One of the best shows ever!!! Came across it on Amazon Prime and got sucked in from the first episode. Not many shows can do that. I hope it gets renewed. We need to see how it all ends!!!
Best show on TV. They’re just not getting the word out. The potential is there for Game of Thrones status.

If Syfy really wants to be taken seriously, they have to keep it going, it’s a prestige show. First good SF show in years that isn’t some mainstream licence for sheeps or more fantasy than science. Finally some watchable “hard” (for TV standards) science-fiction show ever.
The Syfy programming has been getting better or at least watchable and less cheap recently (Expanse, Magicians, Happy, Krypton, Killjoys, good stuff in preparation and less braindead entertainment and cheap ****), they have to keep going
I spoke to someone on the production team and he’s on edge right now, the decision will come down in the next 2 weeks. the ratings dont seem good enough for syfy to carry the (financial)burden alone, maybe some deal with Netflix can save the day but it seemed like a long shot. ironically the guy explained that the most expensive part of the show is a sunken cost: the incredible thing about the expanse is that although its sci-fi they insisted on building a lot more physical sets and use as little special effects as possible which gives it… Read more »
One of the things that hurt the show is the authors real world political stance. He/They instantly alienated (no pun intended) half the population with his/their hard leaning political discourse. I was most surprised after reading their books, that they didn’t have a more thought provoking discussion with their audience. Big mistake. It might cost all of us Season 4.
