After five seasons on the air, CBS has killed a staple of the Friday night schedule. Ghost Whisperer won’t be back next fall on the Tiffany network. Not unless it can come back from the dead…
Ghost Whisperer tells the tale of Melinda Gordon (Jennifer Love Hewitt), a young woman with the ability to see and talk to dead people. Regular castmembers over the past five seasons have included David Conrad, Camryn Manheim, Jay Mohr, Aisha Tyler, Christoph Sanders, Jamie Kennedy, and Kenneth Mitchell.
The TV show debuted in September 2005 and the season attracted an average of a 2.9 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 10.2 million viewers. In seasons two and three, the demo rose to a 3.0 rating with 9.9 and 8.6 million viewers respectively. For season four, the ratings went up again, to a 3.7 rating and 10.6 million viewers.
Unfortunately this year, the ratings fell — a lot. The season kicked off with a 2.3 rating and 8.7 million viewers. Things went further downhill from there. Last month, they hit a series low with a 1.3 rating in the demo and 5.96 million viewers. Though Ghost Whisperer was once a hit show for the network, those times are clearly over.
To little surprise, CBS has decided to cancel Ghost Whisperer. The series finale is set to air this Friday, May 21st.
However, because ABC Studios co-produces the series (with CBS), there have been discussions that it could switch networks. Medium ran for years on NBC before being cancelled and picked up by CBS.
ABC’s entertainment president, Stephen McPherson, has said that he’d be interested in picking up Ghost Whisperer if the series became available. ABC scheduler Jeff Bader told Variety today that they’ve toyed with the idea. He said, “We talked a lot about it. It could make a good lead-in to Body of Proof.”
To keep costs down, ABC has been committed to running only one scripted series on Friday nights but the execs will supposedly look at the possibility of picking up Ghost Whisperer in the next few days.
What do you think? Should ABC pick up Ghost Whisperer for season six or should it stay cancelled?

It would be fantastic if ABC picks up the series, it is a fantastic show that has a following overseas as well as the United States. PLEASE ABC pick it up I dont think you will be sorry, so many people will be happy to see it continue.
Yes please pick this show up it’s amazing and it’s the only way me and my mom can feel close to each other when we watch ghost whisperer it’s our favorite show please don’t let it die!!!!!!!!!!!
ABC, please pick up Ghost Whisperer! It is the only show on TV that I absolutely love, and I’m so upset to hear that it’s gone!
Yes please stay on the air!!! CBS, NBC, whatever! Although the show has become a bit different…it is still a great show and deserves to stay on TV!!!
Oh please pick it up! I love it and I look forward to it every week. It’s different from all the other shows about cops and doctors! So please pick it up!
Can’t believe they would even consider cancelling this show……Most of my friends & relatives watch it and can’t wait for Friday night……..I think it would be stupid to cancel it.
ghost whisperer is a great show Please do not cancel such a good show !!!!
Yes please ABC pick up GW. It can end now. It has to explain about the cold ones and the shineys.
Please keep
PLEASE! PLEASE! PLEASE! Pick up Ghost Whisperer I love this show, WHY because there is not all the bad words, nudity or people running around with guns all the time trying to kill everyone. It is a wonderful show for the whole family to sit down and watch together. ABC would be good because in my area I can’t get CBS so I have to go to the internet to watch some of my favorite shows that are on CBS.
It would be a shame to lose Ghost Whisperer. It is fantastic.
please please ABC pick up Ghost Whisper
LOVE this show……if you pick it ABC that would be awesome !!!!!!!!!
I think the series dragged out the “shinies”, etc or whatever with the son. I find him wooden and not particularly lovable. I used to love the show and still watch it, but it became the Jennifer and Jaime show. I was watching the early seasons where she turned to Jim for advice and just loved their relationship. I say when in doubt, go back to the roots. I’m glad they have their child, but while Jennifer and Jaime may click off screen, on screen the chemistry is not there, certainly not like it is with her TV husband.
PLEASE DO NOT CANCEL this show! I have watched it since season 1. I have to DVR the show since I work Friday nights and they need to learn to count the those of us who record our shows. I am so close to never starting another new show again since all they do is cancel them.
