PBS just aired the final episode of Home Fires in the U.S., but is that really it for the TV show? Recently, executive producers Simon Block and Francis Hopkinson spoke with RadioTimes about the cancellation of the UK series.
The period drama, which aired on ITV in the UK, follows the members of the Women’s Institute during World War II. The cast includes Francesca Annis, Daisy Badger, Mark Bazeley, Leanne Best, and Samantha Bond. The show was cancelled last year after only two seasons.
In the interview, Block said he was surprised by ITV‘s decision to cancel Home Fires:
It’s always difficult to gauge how things are going to go so you don’t quite know what the criteria for whether something’s going to carry on or not. It had held its audience, it had won its slots, figures were strong as far as I was told so in that sense I guess it was a surprise in that it went against what we were expecting based on the criteria we were told things get judged by.”
Nevertheless, Block says he’s been touched by the efforts of fans to bring the show back:
I’ve been blown away. When the news came out that it had been cancelled, suddenly everything went ballistic and you really get a sense of how passionately people feel about it. That was really a bit of a shock.”
And what about another season? Hopkinson says they are actively looking for options to bring back Home Fires:
It’s something we’re talking about. I think the audience profile was very good – upmarket and female – and that’s an audience that a lot of advertisers want so there is some interest.”
What do you think? Are you a fan of Home Fires? Do you want the show to come back for another season?
Homefires is a terrific, well written, beautifully filmed, Masterpiece series, which ended abruptly after just 2 seasons. Clearly, two years after the show was sacked, there are still many fans out here; Simon Block has apparently written more stories for all of the main characters, which deserve to be brought to life again! I recently found the short 2 seasons available at my local library and watched each year’s 6 episodes, appreciating the rich detail, outstanding acting, period costumes, beautiful music and great storytelling. Bring Homefires back to Masterpiece!
What a great show. Please bring it back!! You can’t leave us hanging like that.
I loved this show!! To cancel when thevillage is attacked is awful! we deserve plot resolutions!
ITV made a mistake cancelling Home Fires! They should have ended it with season three or made a movie to finish the story!
Oh, what a great series this is! Please bring it back!! Why in heavens name would you cancel it? Just curious. Thank you.
Bring back Home Fires and Tennison.
You always cancel the best series. I hope Amazon or Netflix pick up these two outstanding shows!
Please bring back the Home Fires series. Just finished watching the second season on Amazon Prime.
VERY disappointed that this great series has been cancelled. It is one of the best t.v. shows I’ve ever seen, actors are superb, bring it back it’s one of the few good shows out there.
Please bring back Home Fires! My whole family was so engaged and we finally had something we all liked to watch together. My poor kids were so distraught to learn that the last episode was it. The characters feel like family now and we’re all so hooked! Please, oh please, bring back our favorite characters!!
We love it! The characters are so we’ll developed. You left us hanging. We want David to get a love. We need to know what happens to his family, does he have a brother or sister? Bob needs to get his! We want the doctor cured. And so much more…
Please bring Home fires back
Bring back Home Fires. A fabulous series with wonderful actors.
Should have mentioned that I lived in Cheshire for a bit as a child in the 50’s and my husband and I have returned to California.
I loved Home Fires. We don’t really understand how WW2 effected the British countryside. We just recently realized that it had been cancelled.
My husband and I were very disappointed that Season 3 of Home Fires will not happen. The cast and story were very compelling. The sets, costumes, fabrics, fashions, kitchens and interiors were all so wonderful and timely. It all felt very real and we could not wait to see what would happen each week. We have been playing different scenarios as to what happened when the plane hit the doctor’s home. I think we are a bit behind here in America as I read. I guess we will have to look for the books if the program is not reinstated… Read more »
