UK Channel 4 has cancelled the Indian Summers TV show after two seasons. A British drama set in Simla (Shimla) in northern India, the first season of Indian Summers aired on PBS in the US, from September to November 2015. PBS has not yet announced the premiere date for the second and final season of Indian Summers. It is expected to air stateside in 2016, though. Masterpiece PBS co-produces the series, and PBS released a season two preview, back in December.
Indian Summers stars Julie Walters, Henry Lloyd-Hughes, Jemima West, Nikesh Patel, Roshan Seth, and Lillete Dubey. The cast also includes Alexander Cobb, Craig Parkinson, Fiona Glascott, Amber Rose Revah, Aysha Kala, Olivia Grant, and Edward Hogg.
Radio Times confirmed the Indian Summers cancellation with Channel 4. Here is more:
Much like the British Empire itself, Indian Summers has retreated into history. Channel 4 has confirmed that the period drama, set during the British Raj, will not be returning for a third series.
“We’re incredibly proud of Indian Summers and have loved having it in the schedule, the channel said in a statement. “But with a number of new drama launches already confirmed for 2017, we have decided not to commission a third series.”
Here is more on the Indian Summers TV series, from a 2014 PBS press release announcing the series.
Set against the sweeping grandeur of the Himalayas and tea plantations of Northern India, the drama tells the rich and explosive story of the decline of the British Empire and the birth of modern India, from both sides of the experience. But at the heart of the story lie the implications and rami cations of the tangled web of passions, rivalries and clashes that de ne the lives of those brought together in this summer which will change everything.
It’s the summer of 1932. India dreams of Independence, but the British are clinging to power. In the foothills of the Himalayas stands Simla, a little England where every summer the British power-brokers of this nation are posted to govern during the summer months.
Ralph Whelan (Lloyd-Hughes), coolly ambitious, a coming man and tipped for promotion, is Private Secretary to the Viceroy of India. His sister, Alice (West), returns to Simla alone with her child and nds herself drawn to Aafrin (Patel), a Junior Clerk in the Viceroy’s of ce and son to Roshana (Dubey) and Darius (Seth), a gentle man and veteran of The Great War. Aafrin is brother to Sooni (Kala), severe and beautiful, and his spoilt younger sister Shamshad.
At the heart of Simla’s society is Cynthia (Walters), widowed doyenne of the Royal Club who is as at home in the tack room as she is the ballroom. A force to be reckoned with, her in uence spreads throughout the community.
The cast of characters also includes Douglas (Parkinson), who runs a missionary school, his wife Sarah (Glascott) who yearns for the comforts of home, Ian McLeod (Cobb), the young and naïve Scottish tea plantation heir, and the mysterious Anglo-Indian woman Leena (Revah).
As Indian Summers begins, the stories of promises, secrets, politics, power, sex and love play out as the British Raj begins to falter and a nation opens its eyes to the possibilities of freedom.
What do you think? Are you a fan of the Indian Summers TV show on Channel 4 and PBS? Do you think Indian Summers was cancelled at the right time, or should it have been renewed for a third season?
this was my new favorite show!! so much history, fabulous actors and actresses, great scenery, great drama, romance. it will be missed!! wish there was going to be a third season
I loved this show!!! Can’t believe it was cancelled…great show wonderful actors beautiful scenery and story…what a shame..bring it back!!!!!!!#
I am just devastated. I live in the USA and began watching this series on Amazon, and found this article saying there is no season 3! This was such a good show, with fantastic characters and actors. Please Please Please bring this one back!!!
I am puzzled why this was cancelled. This was the best historical drama since Downton Abbey. My wife and i enjoyed this series together and were hoping for another great season. Too bad. Great actors all.
I am devastated that there will be no third season. There is so much that could be developed for the story line, as India moves to independence and the world becomes mired in the build up to World War 2. It served to educate and explore the prejudices and unseen forces that shape each person. I would hope the producers revisit their decision and do at least a third season. We can’t just be left hanging!,
I have been waiting for season 3 and was truly surprised and disappointed to know that Indian Summers was cancelled. It was definitely a Masterpiece type of show! Please reconsider and produce the 3rd Season so that we may continue with the drama and storylines. It is cruel for the viewers to have so many questions unanswered!! It was one of those throw back era of a drama that really educates us about the relationship ship between India and U.K. with love and death of hopes and dreams.
So sad to hear this, loved this show, nothing else like it. Disappointing to invest time in a program and not be able to see in through the end of the story.
I’m beyond upset the show is cancelled. I was on a countdown waiting for Season 3. I wish they wouldn’t do stuff like this!!!!!
I had no idea Indian Summers had been cancelled. I am so disappointed. I loved this show and was so looking forward to season 3. Loved the cast, the story, and the setting was terrific!
Both my Husband and I love Indian summer. We had know idea that it had been cancelled. If anything it should have had a 3rd season to end it better then people can order the DVD with a good ending.
I was very excited to see a series 3 of Indian Summers . I am so sad there will not be one. Please reconsider!!
very disappointed Indian Summers was cancelled. finish season 2 and a season3 a must have! you cannot leave your fans hanging like that or they will stop watching other shows. why get invested in a show if it will be abruptly cancelled in an unfinished seas
What a terrible decision. This show is so richly told with drama, vibrant settings, culture and history, glamour and simple things. I’m so sad the story won’t continue. The plot twists are exquisite. A very bad decision to not continue. Is there any undoing of this? Who might we petition?
So sorry to hear of this cancellation. Love the characters, and now want to know more of the history of the rise of modern India. Will need to find another way…..
Please bring Indian Summers back. It was smartly written and beautifully shot. Please reconsider.
