What’s This TV Show About?
Streaming on the Netflix paid subscription platform, The Last Kingdom stars Alexander Dreymon, David Dawson, Emily Cox, Ian Hart, Tobias Santelmann, Thure Lindhardt, Millie Brady, Alexandre Willaume, Julia Bache-Wiig, Joseph Millson, and Peter McDonald. An adaptation of Bernard Cornwell’s novel series, The Saxon Stories, the historical drama follows Uhtred of Bebbanburg (Dreymon), the son of a 9th Century Saxon nobleman. After killing his father, Danish invaders kidnap the boy and he is raised by their warlord, Ragnar. Years later, when Ragnar is killed, Uhtred vows to avenge him, even as he returns to Bebbanburg to claim his birthright.
The Last Kingdom has been renewed for a third season which will debut TBD. Stay tuned for further updates.
Telly’s Take
Unless Netflix decides to release streaming “ratings” it is always difficult to gauge the success of streaming TV shows, like The Last Kingdom. So, let’s look at what we do know. Netflix became a co-producer after the first season ran on BBC Two in UK and BBC America in the US. And in the US, the second season will have its first run on Netflix, leaving BBC America out of the picture. They must have some faith in the project. Provided the show continues to do well in both the UK and in the international markets that get the series via Netflix, I suspect The Last Kingdom will be renewed for season three. 9/26/17 update: Though a season three renewal hasn’t been announced, there have been reports of season three casting and filming.

What do you think? Are you glad that The Last Kingdom TV show has been renewed for a third season? How would you feel if this TV show had been cancelled instead?
I loved the show I’m hoping for a season 3
I loved the show and I so hope for a third season
If it’s cancelled, it puts us on a par with the US for baffling series cancellations.
There were something like 10 or 11 books in the orginal Saxon Stories novels, the end of series 2 got us as far as book 4; there is plenty of life left in this eminently watchable drama
There are 10 books by Bernard Cornwall I’ve read them all and even tho they’ve condensed the books into the series-they (the series) are still good enough to be finished. I’m hoping they don’t leave so much (of the books POV) out, it’d still be worth watching IF they don’t cancel it.
Heck ya!! We need to see the rest!!
The show writers say they have 6 more Ready and waiting!!
There are only 10 books in the series. Since each episode covers two books, it is unlikely that the writer(s) have said they 6 more scripts ready. At most, if they are writing them that far in advance, only 3 more “ready and waiting.” I think what was meant was there are 6 more books in the series from which to write scripts.
I recently read that the BBC no longer has anything to do with producing TLK. Netflix is now co-producing with Carnival Films. Season 3 has been filming starting last fall and is expected to, hopefully, begin airing by this fall/winter. Season 3 is also supposed to have 10 episodes instead of 8, so that might delay airing season 3. If one researches the directors, writer, editors, etc., one will see that season 3 is indeed filming. Since Netflix has stayed mum on the subject, which makes no sense, I doubt they would be filming and not airing season 3.
Plus I’m sure even if they run thru all the stuff in the books, there is some creative minds out there who would LOVE a chance to write script for something that will eventually rival “Game of Thrones” which I also loved
There needs to be another season as the story is yet complete. We need a third season ir what ever it takes to complete the story.
This the best show ever please be a season 3 thank u
The story isn’t really complete until at least book 10, but it’s unlikely there will be five seasons. I predict that season 3 will be the last since Alfred dies in book 6, which would wrap up the relationship between the two main characters, and Uhtred is about age 45 when that happens. Book 7 picks up when he’s 50 and while there is a lot left to his story, the powers that be may not feel it’s worth the cost.
Already in withdrawal ! Season 3 is a must
Please let there be a third season. This series has been one of my favourites and and hoping the tale of Uhtred will be continued.
Hey, I want more! That was too much fun
Need season 3. Obv a lot of ppl watch it
This show has to have more episodes!!!!!!!!!!!! More season!
Definitely looking forward to more seasons of The Last Kingdom. I was glad that there was a lot less nudity for season 2.
This is an awsome show, please renew for third season.
It would be unfortunate if the show was cancelled, considering the whole storyline with his uncle hasn’t be resolved
Roose Bolton? Really!? GOT it is not, but still worth watching. I’ve read all the books (10-The Saxon Tales series). They’ve left a lot out like GOT and it will take at least 5 or 6 seasons to finish it. Hope they do…
The last kingdom diserves more seasons is a grate show and more than 8 episodes por season
WHY ISN’T THIS STILL ON BBCA??? (and yes, I am yelling) 🙂
We must have a season 3 of the last kingdom, our hero Uhtred still has many more villains to dispatch and damsels to rescue as well as seeing Alfred thank him properly and his lands reclaimed. At least another 3 seasons worth of stories. Can we have 12 episodes next time.
Must never end. The public have spoken. From wessex to cumberland and all the Lords .
I read there will be 10 episodes in season 3, which has been filming from the statements made by the directors, writer, editors, etc. Some of them even have it listed on their current CVs. Season 3 should begin airing this winter. It would be great to get 10 episodes because only 8 is rushing the story too much.
