Since ABC cancelled the Last Man Standing TV show, the studio that produces it, 20th Century Fox television, is shopping season seven of the Tim Allen sitcom to other outlets. Last Man Standing also stars Nancy Travis, Molly Ephraim, Kaitlyn Dever, Amanda Fuller, Jordan Masterson, Flynn Morrison, Jonathan Adams, Christoph Sanders, and Hector Elizondo.
Will 20th Century be successful? Well, the sixth season of Last Man Standing averaged a 1.15 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 6.41 million viewers, and reruns do well in syndication, so they’ve got motive and something of a shot.
Variety spoke with studio presidents Jonnie Davis and Howard Kurtzman, who were surprised by ABC’s decision to cancel Last Man Standing. Here’s more:
“That’s the one that’s really an open sore right now,” Davis said. Kurtzman added, “We really were expecting a pickup. The fact that we didn’t get a pickup was a surprise and a disappointment. I think no one was more disappointed than Tim Allen, such a huge star with such a huge following.”
But the series, which was ABC’s second most-watched comedy last season behind “Modern Family,” may not be dead. Asked whether “Last Man Standing” would be shopped to other networks, Kurtzman said, “We’re starting to explore that. If it’s not going to go forward at ABC, of course Jonnie and I are hopeful that we can find another home for it.”
“Last Man Standing” faces an uphill climb in search of a new network. After six seasons, costs for the series are significantly higher than those for younger multi-camera comedies typically are. And the buying patterns of broadcast networks this development season showed little appetite for multi-cams among most of the Big Four.
Some streaming services have seen recent success with multi-cams, such as Netflix with “Fuller House” and “The Ranch.”
And the studio heads are encouraged by the fan support that they’ve seen for the show since ABC confirmed its cancellation last week. “We know how passionate our fans are, and we’re seeing that now,” Davis said.
Some fans believe ABC cancelled Last Man Standing, because of Tim Allen’s conservative political outlook. Earlier in the week, though, ABC entertainment president Channing Dungey said cancellation was a business and scheduling decision. Once the Alphabet Network decided to remove comedies from its Friday night lineup, there was not another good place in the schedule for it.
What do you think? Will another network or streaming outlet pick up the seventh season of Last Man Standing, or is it likely to remain cancelled? Let us know, below.
The last family sitcom. If another network does not pick up Last Man Standing, it is a huge loss for the fans. I can only get my husband to stop watching the History channel for Last Man Standing….save this show and my marriage….Just kidding, my marriage is strong. Hmm just like the ratings.
Please please please renew Last Man Standing ! I love love love this show. Its hilarious! Hopefully CBS or FOX… (I’m sorry I don’t have Netflix) will continue Last Man Standing Season 7…. I’m so excited Hallmark, Freeform and CMT continues the reruns Seasons 1-5. I’m disappointed I didn’t get to watch Season 6. ***GOOD LUCK LAST MAN STANDING…One of your many loyal fans***
This was a show the whole family could watch together. It had it all. Family, conservative views, liberal views, and did I mention FUNNY. If a network doesn’t pick it up, I think that Netflix could be a great home for it. Here’s to hoping that we get more of this terrific show!!
Please save Last Man Standing. My family and I thoroughly enjoy it.
An awesome show. If ABC doesn’t need a comedy – there are plenty of other networks that do. Please someone pick up one of the last true family shows still on the air.
Please save Last Man Standing, I am mostly homebound, and the show keeps me uplifted.
I think ABC is full of crap!!!!! They are banking on American Idol bringing in great numbers, so they cancelled some very good shows. I really hope Idol sinks like the damn Titanic
I guess they forgot that Idol was cancelled for a reason. It was worn out. I was a loyal viewer of Idol and the last 3 years were painful to get through. Let dead dogs lie.
I so hope another network picks this show up, it’s one of the best comedies going.. I lover all the characters and would like to see this show continue for a long time to come.
I am so disappointed that the show has been cancelled. I truly believe it was cancelled because of his conservative views. I hope that it is picked up by another network and not streamed since I don’t subscribe to Netflix or any other streaming service.
CBS should consider it. They skew older anyway and with the crap they put on in the fall, they’re going to need a decent mid season replacement!
Please leave this show on . I love it . One of the best show. Please please keep this show on.
It’s the best sitcom show that I enjoy watching and the only show I look forward to watching on Fridays. It should be picked up by other channel. Or maybe perhaps change the day that it’s on and put in a different lineup. Hopefully they will come up with a solution and will look forward to watching the new season. PLUS one of the only show whose reruns I never get tired of watching!
i really hope another network picks up last man standing its one of the best if not the best family show on tv there are not alot of shows you can sit down and watch as a family anymore very sad that they want it cancelled the fans dont and arent we as the viewers the ones you should be listening to
Another channel needs to pick it up. Best sitcom playing, love the vlogs. Someone pick it up and rub it into abc’s face. Just because the librals can’t hack it doesn’t mean they should cancel it. There are a lot worst shows I see playing and I bet their ratings are worse, cancel those!
Heck yea! Best show ever ,why wouldn’t another channel pick it up. Show abc what bad decision skills they have.
