Though politics are an extra touchy subject these days, CBS decided to order a new drama about a blonde, female Secretary of State — Madam Secretary. Some feel that it’s a thinly-veiled allusion to Hillary Clinton while others see the show as a piece of fiction. Either way, CBS is a corporation that makes money from selling advertising and must attract healthy ratings to do that. Is Madam Secretary a success with viewers? Will it survive? Cancel or keep it?
On Madam Secretary, former CIA analyst Elizabeth McCord (Tèa Leoni) returns to public life after being recruited by the President (Keith Carradine) to become the new Secretary of State. The rest of the cast includes Željko Ivanek, Bebe Neuwirth, Geoffrey Arend, Patina Miller, Erich Bergen, Tim Daly, Katherine Herzer, and Evan Roe.
The series debuted on September 21st to a mediocre 2.0 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 14.75 million viewers. Last week, Madam Secretary dropped 30% in the demo to a 1.4 rating and dropped 14% in viewership, to 12.72 million. Those aren’t very encouraging numbers for a new series and CBS was surely expecting a lot better.
Low-rated, The Good Wife brings the network some prestige but CBS needs more shows with better numbers.
If Madam Secretary’s ratings stay at this level or continue to decline (particulalry in the demo), this new show will be in very real danger of being cancelled. On the positive side, the network is likely to be patient — at least for awhile. The ratings could go up, especially if the show starts getting some positive word of mouth.
But, what do you think? Do you like Madam Secretary? Will you keep watching? Do you think it should be cancelled? Do you think that it should/will end up being renewed for a second season?
I have been a fan of Tea Leoni for some time now. She was the original reason I began watching the show when it was announced she was the lead character. I have enjoyed every episode so I hope it does not go away.
Please keep Madam Secretary. I look forward to watching this show on Sunday evenings. It shows intelligence and I like the fast pace. It’s so much better than many other shows on TV. Please keep this great show.
This is the one TV show I make a point of watching. I was very disappointed these past two weeks to see that it hasn’t been on.

Love Tea Leoni in this show. It would have much better chance to succeed if it wasn’t being messed up by football games. Please keep the series.
So you bet give this TV show a better time slot and send all the 24/7 rabid sports fans packing over to ESPN where belong!…As a lot of people are fed with too much sports and want to see the TV Shows we like to watch instead!
love Tea Leoni
I totally enjoy seeing this show every week. I sincerely hope CBS does NOT drop it!!!!!!
I love Madam Secretary. My husband was not a fan at first, but as the season has gone on, he has watched it more and is getting hooked on it like I am. This is a very good show. Great acting and up to date with the world. I definitely vote to renew the next year for Madam Secretary. I think that the ratings will be in the incline.
Definitely keep. this is a great show!!!
I find this show intriguing. Tea Leoni is brilliant and so good to see her on television again. It would be a true disappointment if CBS cancels this show. Reminds me of The West Wing and I was upset when NBC cancelled that show.
Love the show… Whole family does… Please don’t cancel….
Thank You
Love the show
If Dish cancells CBS on KDKA, Pittsburgh, I will have to cancell my Dish and go to another company.
Try an antenna with a rotor. I did and HD TV is free. I get all 4 networks, CBS, ABC, NCC, and PBS plus a lot of syndicated channels like Retro, QVC, ME TV and several old movie channels. ALL Free.
This is a great show, maybe if you moved it to another night or give it a chance when football season is over it will be in better standings. Please keep it.
Keep Madam Secretary. It’s intelligent and entertaining. It’s not cheap laughs, rude humor, and/or base and disgusting.
