Aloha! Deadline reports CBS is developing a reboot of the Magnum P.I. TV series. The Hawaii-set crime drama, which ran on CBS from 1980 to 1988 starred Tom Selleck as Private Investigator Tom Magnum. The cast also included John Hillerman, Roger E. Mosley, and Larry Manetti.
According to the report, in CBS‘ new Magnum P.I. series, the title character will be a, “decorated ex-Navy SEAL who, upon returning home from Afghanistan, repurposes his military skills to become a private investigator.” The part of Higgins, which was originated by Hillerman, will be reworked as a female character, Juliet Higgins.
Here’s more, from Deadline:
CBS has shelled out a big pilot production commitment to Magnum P.I., an update of the classic 1980s Tom Selleck series set in Hawaii. It hails from Peter Lenkov, CBS/CBS Studios’ go-to writer for rebooting iconic procedurals who has successfully revived Hawaii Five-0 and MacGyver, and Davis Entertainment (The Blacklist).
Co-written by Lenkov and fellow Hawaii Five-0 executive producer/co-showrunner Eric Guggenheim, Magnum P.I. will feature the same central quartet of characters as the original but, instead of four guys, it will consist of three men and a woman, with Higgins (played by John Hillerman) reconceived as Juliet Higgins. CBS/CBS Studios took a similar approach with Sherlock Holmes’ sidekick Watson on Elementary, who became Joan Watson.
The new Magnum P.I. follows Thomas Magnum, a decorated ex-Navy SEAL who, upon returning home from Afghanistan, repurposes his military skills to become a private investigator. With help from fellow vets Theodore “TC” Calvin and Orville “Rick” Wright, as well as that of disavowed former MI:6 agent Juliet Higgins, Magnum takes on the cases no one else will, helping those who have no one else to turn to. Action, adventure and comedy aside, Magnum P.I. will also explore a brotherhood forged by the trauma of combat, what it means to return home an ex-soldier, and a commitment to continuing to serve while in the private sector.
Lenkov and Guggenheim executive produce with John Davis and John Fox of Davis Entertainment. CBS TV Studios co-produces with rights holder Universal TV.

What do you think? Were you a fan of the original Magnum P.I. TV series on CBS? Who would you cast in this new reboot? Let us know, below.
It’s already is less appealing to make Higgins a woman. Think about it. The tension will be between Magnum and Higgins – don’t we already have a long list of similar scenarios? – instead of Magnum being the typical bachelor, ALso, the guy to guy frank discussions will be lacking, this was an essential part of Magnum. Finally, the actor they will choose will have to be a looker, but a guy who has brains also, cause that was a part of the discrete attraction Tom Selleck brought to the character. Why revive a good thing if it is to… Read more »
Sounds great!
The reason some of these ‘remakes’ don’t work is because they loose/change the essence of the original. There is only 1 Magnum and that is Tom Selleck! Ironside didn’t take becayse they changed the main character. Charlie’s Angel’s failed because they cast the wrong people(too young! Knight Rider, changed the essence, so a flop! Hawaii 5 0 great because they kept the feel of the original., Same thing with Macgyver. I won’t be watching this new Magnum.
There is only one Thomas Magnum. Just NO!
another FLOP remake
CBS should let ABC work on a sequel to focus on Magnum’s daughter.
I won’t watch this reboot and I hope CBS cancels it after one season due to low ratings.
good grief why? is there nothing they remake these days? please dont do this!
BNN (Big No Need). Without the involvement of Selleck and co-creator Donald Bellisario, this show already has the stench of failure on it.
No. Just no. You can’t reboot Tom Selleck. Don’t even try.
