ABC is keeping things in the family. They’ve renewed Modern Family and The Middle for fourth seasons. Both continue to be very successful shows for the network. While many TV series have seen ratings declines this season both of these have seen increases.
Airing Wednesdays at 8pm, The Middle has been averaging a 2.7 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 8.58 million total viewerrs. Year-to-year, Patricia Heaton and company are up by 8% in the demo (vs a 2.4 rating) and 5% in viewership (vs 8.18 million.
On our ABC Ratings Report Card, which ranks the network’s shows based on their relative demo numbers, The Middle has a “B” grade and is the sixth-highest scripted show on the network.

Modern Family is easily the network’s most successful scripted show. The sitcom’s demo is actually 45% higher than Grey’s Anatomy, it’s closest rival for the top slot.
Season three of Modern Family has averaged a 5.2 rating in the demographic with 12.31 million viewers. Year-to-year, that’s up by 14% in the demo (vs a 4.5 rating) and 10% in viewers (vs 11.17 million).
On our ratings report card, it’s no surprise that Modern Family gets an “A++” grade.
With this kind of success, one has to wonder if ABC might start pushing for a spin-off, ala Private Practice.
ABC announces their 2012-13 schedule next week. It seems unlikely that ABC would move either of these shows to a different timeslot or night but we’ll know for sure on Tuesday.
What do you think? Are you watching either The Middle or Modern Family? Do you think ABC could successfully launch a Modern Family sitcom? Should it star one of the regular castmembers or someone new?

Seriously??? This is unbelievable. The best suspense and drama show in a long time. It kept us on the wait week after week. What does it take for a show to make it anymore. Ashley Judd nailed it. Super bummer 🙁
I love “the middle” so much , please continue this show. It is my favorite show. And also Atticus Shaffer is the lovelest character.
[…] UPDATE: The Middle has been renewed for a fourth season. […]
why the middle didn’t be popular like Modern Family.
I don’t understand you guys
I really wish they would have a season two my husband and I really enjoyed the show, it seems like every time they have a good show on they cancel it . Please change your mind and have a season two.
What the h…… I can’t stand it. I looked so forward to Thursday’s, now this! I am not happy at all. I thought the show was like to the movies every week. So disappointed they didn’t advertise enough.
The Middle is absolutely the best show on television and the only show we can watch as a family. It’s not as pure as snow. It’s real. I wish they would promote it more as “the” family show and “the” funniest show on television. If only they had a good public relations advisor…Come on ABC!!! The Middle isn’t just for parents with kids. It’s for people who have been a kid—that’s pretty much all of us! Come on America!!! I’ve never laughed out loud so much in my life while watching television. I think back to shows that made me… Read more »
The Middle is absolutely the best family show on television. Clean and realistic. The entire cast is very good but Atticus Shaffer (Brick) is a great talent. happy that ABC is keeping this one on for another season. Hopefully, more.
@ Jeremy Rynek: I agree about Modern Family. It’s good but sometimes it’s not all that. But I’m pleased that both MF and The Middle are renewed.
Don’t do a Modern family spin off. If it’s not broken, don’t fix it. I’ve noticed it’s become funnier over the years, but it’s still not perfect. It’s overrated is what I’m trying to say. Anyway with The Middle, wow, it has really come a long way. I remember watching the first half of season 1, it was so not funny at all. Now I’m laughing out loud every week. So good news, but still not surprising though. Just now need to renew last man standing and Don’t trust the ***** in apartment 23. Also I’ve wondered, if Krysten Ritter… Read more »
