We don’t have to worry about New Amsterdam being cancelled right now. The NBC series has already been renewed for a fifth season. But, will that be the end of this Tuesday night drama? Will New Amsterdam land an early sixth season renewal? Stay tuned. *Status update below.
A medical drama, the New Amsterdam TV show stars Ryan Eggold, Janet Montgomery, Freema Agyeman, Jocko Sims, and Tyler Labine, with Michelle Forbes, Sandra Mae Frank, Shiva Kalaiselvan, and Chloe Freeman recurring. Doctor Max Goodwin (Eggold) is a caring physician whose goal is to fix a broken medical system and to provide exceptional care to the people who need it most. He inspires (almost) everyone around him, and will stop at nothing to breathe new life into the understaffed, underfunded, and underappreciated New Amsterdam Medical Center. Those working with Goodwin include Dr. Lauren Bloom (Montgomery), the head of the ER; oncologist Dr. Helen Sharpe (Agyeman); cardiovascular surgeon Dr. Floyd Reynolds (Sims); and psychiatrist Dr. Iggy Frome (Labine). In season four, following a tough year, it’s a new chapter in the characters’ lives, focused on finding more joy. That may not be easy with the addition of Dr. Veronica Fuentes (Forbes) to the team. In an effort to help turn around the overburdened and underfunded hospital, her first order of business is to tear down every progressive program Max has erected.
The ratings are typically the best indication of a show’s chances of staying on the air. The higher the ratings, the better the chances for survival. This chart will be updated as new ratings data becomes available.
5/25 update: You can see the latest night’s ratings in context.
Note: If you’re not seeing the updated chart, please try reloading the page or view it here.
For comparisons: Season three of New Amsterdam on NBC averaged a 0.46 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 3.62 million viewers.
Note: These are the final national ratings, including all live+same day viewing and DVR playback (through 3:00 AM). Early fast affiliate ratings (estimates) are indicated with an “*”. While these numbers don’t include further delayed or streaming viewing, they are a very good indicator of how a show is performing, especially when compared to others on the same channel. There can be other economic factors involved in a show’s fate, but typically the higher-rated series are renewed and the lower-rated ones are cancelled.
What do you think? Do you like the New Amsterdam TV series on NBC? Are you glad that it’s been renewed for a fifth season?
*3/4/2022 update: Season five will end the New Amsterdam show.
Love the show and it’s compassionate
Approach to patients. Very innovative practices. Sets a high moral standard. Makes a worthy contribution to the public’s ethical development!!
This is no longer a medical show. It has devolved into a “relationships are hard” show. Good-bye.
I like all the actors of new amsterdam, they do their best with the scenario that is proposed to them. so I don’t blame them. i still love new amsterdam as much as ever, i would like to find luna helen and max in a beautiful family life on january 4th and thank you to all the actors.
I couldn’t even get through season 4, episode 7. I used to love this show but I’m done with it now. After watching Dr. Reynolds chat with his lover and her husband about there open relationship (which they announced to him while at work), we see Dr. Bloom spoon feeding her lover while sitting on a gurney at work. Seriously! And Max is no longer likable – he makes reckless decisions (for the patients) that would bankrupt the hospital in a month. I also felt really bad for Helen when she was tasked with the insanely difficult job of making… Read more »
Season 4 episode 9 is the last time my family and I will watch this show,, we all tuned in weekly,, from my 13 year old daughter to my 80 year old grandparents,, us not watching anymore will not stop a thing or change a storyline but it’s goin to left and with this Veronica addition the left signal light is stuck on,, I never thought I’d stop watching a series because of one person or character but I jus did
I wish TV shows were more like the 70’s and 80″s. They were more interesting without tearing down Biblical values. Wonder why this nation has so many problems?
Used to be an interesting show, interesting characters and possibilities of good stories developing. After the season 3 woke overload, it would appear the writers have completely lost their way…. I agree with others, the show was about Max, and if he goes, well is there a show at all – mind you, in reality no hospital chief has the time these days to do all the faffing about with good deeds that this characters seems to have. Much like Grey’s, this show has descended into a soap about the sex lives of the characters – it’s a sex life… Read more »
Enjoy this program but don’t turn this into a soap opera and all about sex. Get back to what the show was which was about doctors and patients and running a hospital. Relationships are important but a little less drama. If Max and company leave the show I will stop watching.
I love the show but max makes the show. I hope they all stay, will not watch if Max leaves
I don’t see or feel any JOY in this S4 , Max and Helen chemistry just disappeared because of too many issues, Why can’t writers ever let 2 people be happy without all the issues? WHY? This S4 was supposed to give us JOY, Failed. Sorry for the cast, Ryan , Freema ,Tyler, and all the cast are excellent actors, They deserve better writers to give them great scripts to work with.
I agree, I read the book ans was excited to watch the show with my kids. It has become a horrible show with one and only one focus, sex!!
the last episode was good, sharpwin is everything, do not separate them please, thanks.
I agree with otehr comments. It has become a soppy soap opera. If Max leaves the series they will have to think up something new ro capture viewers.
this show is just boring right now, as a huge fan I’m sad; max and Helen were very good doctors, their love story is interesting, but everything is now focused only on sex, sex sex, Max is no longer the BOSS he used to be. New Amsterdam is going straight into the wall, it’s sad; writers, please come back to the main topic, being doctors and helping patients.
I am a retired nurse and have worked in a hospital my whole life. I loved “New Amsterdam” when it first came out. It was like a fairytale – of how I wish medicine could be. It has deteriorated and sadly this season is pathetic, so far. It has turned into a daytime soap opera, it seems like the focus is on sex now.
I don’t know why the writers have sunk to this level. It makes me sad.
