Nielsen is finally going digital. Deadline reports the TV ratings firm will now take into account viewing numbers from streaming platforms like Hulu and YouTube.
For years, the audience measurement company has lagged behind when it comes to the changing habits of television viewership. With more people watching TV shows on digital platforms, Nielsen will now include “viewers watching linear broadcasts live, on DVRs, or on-demand platforms on desktop computers, tablets and smartphones.”
This means TV ratings should see an increase as digital viewership is taken into account alongside traditional TV viewership.
From Nielsen Product Leadership President Megan Clarken:
[The change] is a major accomplishment in delivering Nielsen Total Audience to the marketplace. [It’s] part of our commitment to provide trusted, independent measurement of the evolving modern media landscape.”
What do you think? Are you interested in TV ratings? Do you think this a positive change from Nielsen?
Good start to fixing their incredibly off numbers, but it’s still not enough… What about those that purchase the day after or preseason orders on Vudu, Fandango Now, Amazon, etc I watch shows like that and I know a lot of people that do too.
Took them long enough, but a good change, I believe.
