Although it just premiered on PBS last night, the Prime Suspect: Tennison TV show has been cancelled after only one season, by ITV. A prequel to the Helen Mirren police drama, and adapted from the Lynda La Plante novel Tennison, the Prime Suspect: Tennison TV show aired on the UK network as Prime Suspect 1973.
Prime Suspect: Tennison stars Stefanie Martini as Jane Tennison. The ITV and PBS TV series cast also includes: Sam Reid, Blake Harrison, Alun Armstrong, Ruth Sheen, Jessica Gunning, Andrew Brooke, Nick Sidi, Geraldine Somerville, Geoffrey Streatfeild, Nancy Carroll, Rosie Day, Lex Shrapnel, Jay Taylor, Jacob James Beswick, Joshua Hill, Daniel Ezra, Tommy McDonnell, and Jordan Long.
Mirror reports:
ITV’s Prime Suspect prequel has been axed after just one run, despite pulling in six million viewers.
The decision not to reorder the retro series, set in 1973, comes after an unfortunate fallout with author Lynda La Plante .
It starred Stefanie Martini as a younger version of Helen Mirren’s character Jane Tennison, when she was a rookie PC.
La Plante had originally been lined up to adapt her novel Tennison for the channel, but later quit the production, citing artistic differences.
At the time she claimed to have been left “very sad” by the fallout, but declined to say what sparked it.
ITV drafted in another writer with bosses saying they were “grateful” to Lynda for allowing them to adapt her “brilliant book”.
She has since penned a follow-up novel, Hidden Killers, which sees Tennison as a detective in the late 70s. But ITV said there were no plans to adapt it.
“We’re very happy with the performance of Prime Suspect 1973 but not everything is meant to run and run,” said one source.
What do you think? Did you watch the Prime Suspect: Tennison TV series premiere on PBS? Will you keep watching, even though you know this TV show is cancelled?
great show/foolish not to do a season 2
So sorry this has been cancelled. My husband and I wondered where it went-Please reconsider.
Was very disappointed to hear of cancellation. The characters were just starting to develop. Feels like it stopped mid-way—and it actually has.
I’m so disappointed. I did not realize The show was cancelled. I was all ready up eTch this week. Very sad, I so enjoyed the show. Michelle A. Brown
Loved this show & am so sad it will not be renewed! Just like Home Fires, another excellent show that was cancelled after one season – and ended on a cliff-hanger! Bah!
A show both my husband and I loved watching and it gets cancelled. Bummer!
Totally disappointed that this has been cancelled.
Much like The Crimson Field, which likewise was not picked up for a second season, Prime Suspect Tennison had its shortcomings when it came to sophisticated plot turns, but yet I couldn’t stop watching it. Stephanie Martini had room to grow into the part and it’s a shame she won’t get that chance. 70s retrospectives are gold in the right hands. Let’s hope ITV can mine something else from that classic decade of filmmaking.
I am very disappointed there will be no season 2. I looked forward to seeing the progression of Jane in the police force and of the rest of the team. Stefanie Martini did a fantastic job. Please change your mind!!
Just finished this and am very disappointed that it is not being continued. They don’t need another book to continue this series. There is plenty of stories that can be told from the 70’s. The acting was very well done and the sets and feel for the time were spot on. Ms. Martini was very expressive. Let’s keep watching Season 1 of Breathless for the umpteenth time!
Hopefully, someone with a brain will bring this back. This reminds of another terrific series that wasn’t renewed ZEN with Rufus Sewell. Such a pity!
Nooooooooooo! My wife and I finished the last episode last night and were really impressed. We were uncertain if they could live up to the level we came to expect from the original Prime Suspect: Tennison series. We were very impressed with the results in the prequel series. Let’s hope there is a way to work things out so production can continue. Somebody help get this back on track!
So the author has “… since penned a follow-up novel, Hidden Killers, which sees Tennison as a detective in the late 70s. But ITV said there were no plans to adapt it. Well, ITV, later for you. NETFLIX. COME RESCUE THIS SHOW!!
NF have better shows, not to save this pointless ****.
I finished the last episode last night. I’m SO disappointed that this won’t be continuing. I loved the first series back in the day – and thought this was ust fantastic that they brought it back to an earlier point in time. Stefani Martini was just AWESOME as Jane Tennison. I was so impressed by her acting (not just hers, but she really shone). I’m a crime-drama nut, and I love the British crime dramas. They’re stripped down, no special action sequences, no special effects, nothing extra except good stories, great acting and great plots. I would love it if… Read more »
Ditto to Joanne’s entire comment!
GAH!!! We just finished it and LOVED it. Too bad it’s been cancelled!
Good show. Sorry to see it end so soon.
