Ray Donovan has fixed his last mistake. Showtime canceled the series after the end of season seven recently, and the news was a shock to all those involved with the series, including the man running things behind the scenes. David Hollander revealed that he thought the series would end with season eight. The writers were working towards that conclusion, and Showtime was aware of that plan when Hollander began writing during season seven.
Hollander said the following about Showtime ending Ray Donovan, per Vulture:
“We’re still scratching our heads. We had no indicator that the show was ending. We were behaving creatively as though we were in mid-sentence. And so, there was no sense that this was going to be a completion. This was in no way a series finale.”
Hollander and his staff already had season eight in mind, and that season was going to end things on a note where the fans would have closure. Season seven did not do that. The fans are left with cliffhangers across the board. Season six’s finale would have closed the series out on a much better note.
Hollander revealed the following about the plot of season eight:
“The pivot we had been making narratively was to move the backstory into the present and run it concurrently. So there were actually two stories to be told: What happened then, really, and how will that impact what happens now? The next step was what happened with Ray and Mickey in the ‘90s, which would have been the creation of Ray Donovan as a character and as a fixer. That’s why we went into such detail to find the right cast.
That [flashback] story was a helpful pivot, at least for me creatively. I felt really good about it. And so, that story was going to run directly against the idea of Ray and Mickey now.”
Could the series return to close things out? Hollander did not count that out, but it would be easier to do sooner rather than later. The sets are still in place, and the cast could be called back in.
Hollander did have this message for the fans:
Thank you, first and foremost. A huge, huge thank you. All we can do is hope that we have an audience that cares. The gratitude is really meaningful to those of us who are feeling a little bit lost by what’s happened.
The other thing that I feel is a bit apologetic. I’m proud of the work that we all did. I’m proud of the way that this year ended. It was powerful and well-acted and they achieved what I hoped they would. However, this wasn’t meant to be [the ending]. You could spin it one way and say that it’s hard to satisfy an audience with a finale, not that I didn’t want to try. I always want the opportunity to try. I just wish I had.”
What do you think? Do you want to see Ray Donovan closed out in a way that ties up the loose ends left by season seven? Or, was it time to end the series?
Ray Donovan is the best show on television, bad form showtime.

Ray Donovan is a fantastic show that Showtime has made some real money through the buy in of the fans. This just shows the lack of concern that Showtime has for its viewers. It would be in the best interest of the Showitme organization to allow the viewers and fans of Ray Donovan to gain the proper closing through a finale season. If they dont then maybe Netflix or Hulu could pick it up in order to show true commitment to fans!
Bring back for a closing 8th season
My favorite series of all time but definitely need closure! I was so excited for Season 8 to start. What a brilliant show…
I’m stunned. We’re left hanging. We need another season to tie things up. PLEASE.
Consider a Showtime cancellation from me now. What they did to the cast and crew by not letting them know that this was the last season is irresponsible and quite thoughtless. Had the writers known, they would have closed out loose ends and delivered a spectacular season finale. I hope HBO or another channel picks them up and gives them a season or more! Many Showtime fans will cancel this subscription and move to that channel. Guaranteed. Showtime…. not a good move on your part.
Ray Donovan needs an eighth season to bring the series to a final conclusion. The stories have been intermingled and well-told so far. It’s a shame to leave the series incomplete. There could be a series spin-off, like Better Call Saul from Breaking Bad, if there is a series conclusion.
How awful! Already figured I would ruethe day when Season 8 would be over. Reading that it would not even occur was so disappointing. Guess I’ll never understand TV execs. Great programming is hard to find. And even if the program was showing some evidence of decline, RD was still some of the best TV out there.
Definitely reconsider and give us season 8! The shows you did continue are not close to the storyline and the acting RD offers. Do yourself a favor. Renew or shoot a two hour special or 6-hour mini-series while the sets are still in place and actors are still available to complete Ray’s transformation and Mickey’s final penance. You will make money, since that’s all Showtime seems to care about.
Bad branding.
This is ridiculous. Cancelled Showtime. It was the only show worth watching. Please Netflix or Amazon pick it up. What a ****** thing to do to Ray fans.
Bring back season 8!!! The show deserves a proper ending.
Bring back Ray Donovan please, maybe in the middle of the summer or spring perhaps!
I will cancel Showtime if they don’t give us devotef fans a real rnding. Right now we were left hanging. How do you even do that after 7 seasons??? Ray Donovan is the best show Showtine has EVER had.
I think this is the best show ever. I definitely would live a real finale. There was no closure and after 7 seasons the show has become a part of our household. We wait all week for Ray Donovan. The characters make you feel a part of the family. My whole house is just devestated because we were loking forward to season 8 and knowing where everyone ends up. As of now we were left hanging! I watch Ray Donovan over and over. Can’t get enough. Please don’t leave us hanging…this is the best show on Showtime!!
Feeling the same way! Waited for it to come back and it’s already gone? Only show I ever followed out here. No need to come back. Quality work from a top notch staff. Thanks so much to all of you! Can’t measure my disappointment. Done with showtime.
I agree. Pretty sure I will cancel showtime. This was the only reason I got it to start with.
Cmon Showtime – respect your subscribers & let us get closure on “Ray Donovan “ Terrible decision to cancel before final season
