Ray Donovan has fixed his last mistake. Showtime canceled the series after the end of season seven recently, and the news was a shock to all those involved with the series, including the man running things behind the scenes. David Hollander revealed that he thought the series would end with season eight. The writers were working towards that conclusion, and Showtime was aware of that plan when Hollander began writing during season seven.
Hollander said the following about Showtime ending Ray Donovan, per Vulture:
“We’re still scratching our heads. We had no indicator that the show was ending. We were behaving creatively as though we were in mid-sentence. And so, there was no sense that this was going to be a completion. This was in no way a series finale.”
Hollander and his staff already had season eight in mind, and that season was going to end things on a note where the fans would have closure. Season seven did not do that. The fans are left with cliffhangers across the board. Season six’s finale would have closed the series out on a much better note.
Hollander revealed the following about the plot of season eight:
“The pivot we had been making narratively was to move the backstory into the present and run it concurrently. So there were actually two stories to be told: What happened then, really, and how will that impact what happens now? The next step was what happened with Ray and Mickey in the ‘90s, which would have been the creation of Ray Donovan as a character and as a fixer. That’s why we went into such detail to find the right cast.
That [flashback] story was a helpful pivot, at least for me creatively. I felt really good about it. And so, that story was going to run directly against the idea of Ray and Mickey now.”
Could the series return to close things out? Hollander did not count that out, but it would be easier to do sooner rather than later. The sets are still in place, and the cast could be called back in.
Hollander did have this message for the fans:
Thank you, first and foremost. A huge, huge thank you. All we can do is hope that we have an audience that cares. The gratitude is really meaningful to those of us who are feeling a little bit lost by what’s happened.
The other thing that I feel is a bit apologetic. I’m proud of the work that we all did. I’m proud of the way that this year ended. It was powerful and well-acted and they achieved what I hoped they would. However, this wasn’t meant to be [the ending]. You could spin it one way and say that it’s hard to satisfy an audience with a finale, not that I didn’t want to try. I always want the opportunity to try. I just wish I had.”
What do you think? Do you want to see Ray Donovan closed out in a way that ties up the loose ends left by season seven? Or, was it time to end the series?
I think it was a bad judgment call by Showtime to cancel Ray Donovan without the fans getting closure. I have watched all 7 seasons and always looked forward to the next. This is a great show and deserves a season 8 just like any other show gets from you Showtime. SHAME ON YOU FOR LEAVING US HANGING AND ENDING AN AWESOME SHOW!
Totally agree. Only reason i pay for showtime.
I think they need season 8 to properly end the show!!!
Please give us another season!!!
We just recently got hooked and watched all 7 seasons between December and January.
We love it and feel like we are part of the Donavan family. My husband and I often reference back to the shows with quotes like the word Sure for instance as that’s how the Donavans answer yes to most questions.
So come on please give us a ending!!!
Please find a way to have season 8. You just can’t leave us hanging
We actually watch all season and episode in a winter binge really enjoyed and was thinner had missed two episodes of season 7 . Realize that there was only 10. Was really excited about the start of another season and found out there was no more seas
on very sad to bad wish you all would reconsider..
Favorite show and we fans deserve a final season
Too bad RAY couldn’t kick down the showtime boob execs doors and FIX this blunder in his cool FONZIE like manner . Ray was my soap and you took it away for no good reason other than to please the showtime execs. SELL THE RIGHTS TO RAY DONOVAN TO ANOTHER NETWORK AND JUST SEE THE RATINGS SOAR. YOU MORONS. YOU’LL ALL BE LOOKING FOR A NEW JOB. MAYBE WITH HBO. THEY’RE A BUNCH OF LOSERS TOO.
Really going to miss these characters and the story that was not allowed to finish. I loved that we got deeper into some of the supporting characters this year and were shown a bit of the family’s backstory. I want to know that middle section that was planned!!!
I had subscribed to showtime because of ray donovan and I am going to cancel my subscription tomorrow
To the showtime execs, that’s right, you don’t even deserve a capital letter. WAKE UP AND SMELL THE GUINNESS!! RAY’S the best show out there. We can’t and don’t deserve to go COLD TURKEY without Shameless and Ray. Sure they’ve aged, but we’ve been faithful on Sundays. Thank God you left us with Billions, or will Chuck and Axe get the same **** deal?
Very disappointed in you .Liev and Jon deserve better.
Dont be a major asshat Showtime!! Wrap up Ray Donovan properly with an 8th season.
This is terrible news! Ray Donovan is a dynamic theatre of drama and cunning action. Please reconsider Showtime. We need a final season with closure! Maybe another network could run the next season if not??
Dear Showtime…you OWE your PAYING subscribers the closure they deserve. How dare you cancel Ray Donovan without an actual ending much less cancel it at all? Your priorities suck..and it’s easy to see your customers aren’t one of them. Right the wrong! Give us one more season or at the very least a movie or I’m cancelling YOU.
I have been a big fan of the show and it was the only reason I even have showtime still. If they dont renew it I’m out no more showtime for me
I watched this show faithfully and pay my cable bill for Showtime faithfully every month on time. So now by canceling Ray Donovan before the series has a finale I don’t know if I would trust Showtime and get involved in any new series. It’s like paying to see a 2 hour movie and they only show you 1 hour and 45 minutes of the film! If they don’t let it play out I will cancel my subscription.
