Cancel your season two plans, fans. There will be no second season of the Sun Records TV show on CMT. The story is ending with one season and has already been removed from the press site. The series is set in Memphis, Tennessee, during the early days of the Civil Rights movement and the birth of rock ‘n’ roll.
A music business drama, Sun Records stars Chad Michael Murray, Billy Gardell, Drake Milligan, Kevin Fonteyne, Christian Lees, and Jonah Lees. The CMT cast also includes: Trevor Donovan, Keir O’Donnell, Jennifer Holland, Margaret Anne Florence, and Kerry D. Holliday.
Deadline reports:
While Nashville — which is half-way though its first season on CMT and fifth overall — has been renewed for a 16-episode sixth season, there are no plans to extend its companion, 8-episode period drama Sun Records, which chronicles the birth of rock ‘n’ roll, CMT’s head of development Jayson Dinsmore told Deadline.
“Originally we had planned for it to be a three-night events, and we morphed the development into a limited-run series,” Dinsmore said of Sun Records, which got a boost by airing behind Nashville. “It always was to be a limited-run series. It did extremely well but there are no current plans for additional episodes. We may revisit. You never know, because it did quite well.”
Sun Records: A Look at the Ratings
The first season of Sun Records averaged a 0.13 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 585,000 viewers. While those ratings seem low in comparison to broadcast network TV series, they fall between the other CMT TV shows we are tracking (i.e. Nashville and Still the King).
What do you think? Did you watch the first season of the Sun Records TV series? Do you think CMT should have cancelled or renewed it for season two?
Sad, I had guit watching cmt since they took Dallas off, Sun records had got me back to watching them again along with other shows or movies.
I hate they taking Sun Records off, it was a short season, and not enough time to really give it a chance. Don’t know when I will watch cmt again, if ever
I LOVED this show!!! Please bring it back!! It was awesome!!! Loved every minute!!! Why are the good shows cancelled?!?!?!
Great show. Hadn’t watched CMT in years until this came along. Sad.
I love the show and I really hope they continue making it. I think it’sa really cool way to lean the history behind a lot of great music!
CMT Is making a big mistake by canceling Sun Records.
Enjoyed the show and would watch season two .Hope they bring it back. I think they need to get into their music careers faster
I thought it was a great show
I am so disappointed…. I just loved this show – with all the history of rock and roll and the actors were all wonderful….. I taped everyone of the shows this season and have watched them over and over. I also recommended to several people I knew to watch – the time and channel….. It just wasn’t advertised much. Can this not be brought back and Nashville cancelled? I watched Nashville faithfully until Rayna James died and then I haven’t watched it since. PLEASE BRING SUN RECORDS BACK…….
I loved this show, CMT please bring it back. This is part of the roots of country music and any true country music fan would have loved it also. I recorded every episode and have watched them over again. Reality TV is just garbage and there is nothing to watch. I anxiously waited for every episode of Sun Records and am very disappointed to here they are cancelling it, what a horrible decision.
deeply disappointed.
Very disappointed! I loved watching this show and loved the stories about each of the artists. I recorded and watched every episode. The cast was great and this was a great show. Not happy with CMT for not continuing this for another season!
I haven’t watched a regular tv series in years and when I saw this I got hooked!
Love the birth of rock n roll. Put this back on, PLEASE!!!!
Really want to see a second season soooo disappointed
No way!! CMT why would you not pick up season two for Sun Records?? I waited for months for it to start, recorded every episode and have watched them several times. It also appears that I’m not the only one who feels this way. With all the garbage on TV these days, this was one of the few shows I could actually watch and enjoy. Please rethink your horrible decision and bring this show back!
Loved Sun Records. Would watch Sun Records.
