Cancel your season two plans, fans. There will be no second season of the Sun Records TV show on CMT. The story is ending with one season and has already been removed from the press site. The series is set in Memphis, Tennessee, during the early days of the Civil Rights movement and the birth of rock ‘n’ roll.
A music business drama, Sun Records stars Chad Michael Murray, Billy Gardell, Drake Milligan, Kevin Fonteyne, Christian Lees, and Jonah Lees. The CMT cast also includes: Trevor Donovan, Keir O’Donnell, Jennifer Holland, Margaret Anne Florence, and Kerry D. Holliday.
Deadline reports:
While Nashville — which is half-way though its first season on CMT and fifth overall — has been renewed for a 16-episode sixth season, there are no plans to extend its companion, 8-episode period drama Sun Records, which chronicles the birth of rock ‘n’ roll, CMT’s head of development Jayson Dinsmore told Deadline.
“Originally we had planned for it to be a three-night events, and we morphed the development into a limited-run series,” Dinsmore said of Sun Records, which got a boost by airing behind Nashville. “It always was to be a limited-run series. It did extremely well but there are no current plans for additional episodes. We may revisit. You never know, because it did quite well.”
Sun Records: A Look at the Ratings
The first season of Sun Records averaged a 0.13 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 585,000 viewers. While those ratings seem low in comparison to broadcast network TV series, they fall between the other CMT TV shows we are tracking (i.e. Nashville and Still the King).
What do you think? Did you watch the first season of the Sun Records TV series? Do you think CMT should have cancelled or renewed it for season two?
why should we be denied to keep learning about the history of these great legends i was learning so much i never knew and then to pull the plug what a sad day cmt should reconsider strongly
Really enjoyed Sun Records. Really gave me a new perspective on the music and artist from that magical period. Discovered new artists and am enjoying their music. I hope they consider a second season. Have to get my fix! Keep the music alive!
Please bring sun records show back. It was awesome
Bring it back it was a great show.. people wanna learn how rock n roll got started ..
My wife and myself were hooked. Very disappointing news here bring back the music!
Please bring back Sun Records, it is an amazing show.
I can’t understand why CMT would cancel a very good show such as Sun Records. We never got to see the recording stories of Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, or Carl Perkins. The show was just really getting good … then BOOM! CMT Execs decide not to renew. Well if they don’t bring it back, I’m through with CMT.
Love the show Sunrecords. Very disappointed the show is being cancelled. It was one show I looked forwards to watching every week. Please reconsider canceling it.
To the cast of Sun Records. You will be missed. This was the history of Rock & Rock, come on CMT your viewers aren’t 14-35 demographic, but they don’t stay home and watch TV on Thursday nights. Let the old folks have a say about this historically correct Entertainment. Guess what we spend money on consumer products too!

Really liked the show! Sad to see it not get another season
Our whole family got addicted to this show and looked forward to watching it every week. We also went to Memphis to tour the Sun Records Studio and stayed at the Peabody so we could watch the famous ducks. Very disappointed they decided not to continue the show.
I watched the first season I really like it became one of my favorite new shows I think it should be renewed
I loved this show. Very disappointed we did not get to see more.
We were really enjoying the show, and were very impressed with the overall historical accuracy of the series. The details that were changed (Marion was alone in the studio when Elvis walked in and she recorded him for the first time, not Sam…) were not egregious enough to turn us off to the series. I know that half a million watchers is not a good number, but from the replies to this thread it looks like the fan base was very devoted to the show.
Perhaps it would be good for a venue like Amazon.
People in New Jersey may not be that big on country music, but we know good acting and good storytelling when we see it. It is only because of “Sun Records” that I even know where to find CMT on my cable lineup. Trust me, if Thinkfactory Media finds another distribution channel for a Season Two, we will track it down and be there for opening night.
