Cancel your season two plans, fans. There will be no second season of the Sun Records TV show on CMT. The story is ending with one season and has already been removed from the press site. The series is set in Memphis, Tennessee, during the early days of the Civil Rights movement and the birth of rock ‘n’ roll.
A music business drama, Sun Records stars Chad Michael Murray, Billy Gardell, Drake Milligan, Kevin Fonteyne, Christian Lees, and Jonah Lees. The CMT cast also includes: Trevor Donovan, Keir O’Donnell, Jennifer Holland, Margaret Anne Florence, and Kerry D. Holliday.
Deadline reports:
While Nashville — which is half-way though its first season on CMT and fifth overall — has been renewed for a 16-episode sixth season, there are no plans to extend its companion, 8-episode period drama Sun Records, which chronicles the birth of rock ‘n’ roll, CMT’s head of development Jayson Dinsmore told Deadline.
“Originally we had planned for it to be a three-night events, and we morphed the development into a limited-run series,” Dinsmore said of Sun Records, which got a boost by airing behind Nashville. “It always was to be a limited-run series. It did extremely well but there are no current plans for additional episodes. We may revisit. You never know, because it did quite well.”
Sun Records: A Look at the Ratings
The first season of Sun Records averaged a 0.13 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 585,000 viewers. While those ratings seem low in comparison to broadcast network TV series, they fall between the other CMT TV shows we are tracking (i.e. Nashville and Still the King).
What do you think? Did you watch the first season of the Sun Records TV series? Do you think CMT should have cancelled or renewed it for season two?
I loved it…please bring it back!…great acting.
It’s to bad they didn’t try another night and/or promoting it more as the show wasn’t there best ratings but wasn’t their worst so alittle change could’ve made it higher. The story was just beginning and I was looking forward to seeing it continue. It’s to bad.
great show loved it bring it back. there is so much garbage on tv that are a waste of my life to watch. sun records was one of the few good shows worth the time to watch.
My husband and I loved it…the actors who portayed the singers were awesome!!! really wish they would have renewed it ..maybe bring it back at an earlier time slot…plz bring it back…
I really liked the show. Well written, well acted. Real events relating an important era in American music. Stop it without developing the complete story? Say it isn’t so.
I agree the show wasn’t promoted very well and could use a different time slot. My husband and I love this show. Please bring it back.
The show was never promoted although it was a great show. My wife and I had just seen the stage version of “The Million Dollar Quartet” and was very pleased to see that “Sun Records” was on TV. We just happened to notice the show was on while looking for anything to watch on a typical boring TV evening.
How is a show supposed to succeed when the network does nothing to promote it?
I, too, found it by accident. DVRed every episode.
This was really a good show just placed in the wrong time slot. They need to bring it back.
BRING BACK SUN RECORDS!!!!! I was born pre=technology, pre HBO, pre everything. the 50’s and 60’s was a wonderful a wonderful time to be a kid. and watching this program brought back those memories. My children also enjoy the music, and watching this as a family was great. I think you should reconsider your decision …..
I watched a nd enjoyed it. I think it just needed to be promoted more
Please bring it back! It was amazing, and the only show me and my boyfriend ever agreed upon!
I loved the idea of this show. The main male actor was very weak so it was hard to watch at times. But the story was worth watching. Great idea and you should recast the main actor and bring it back please.
I watched it and I loved it. It was very interesting to see how Sun Records and the early days of rock and roll came to be. I was looking forward to season 2. So sad to hear it has been cancelled
This was one of the best shows on television, hands down. I told numerous people about it, but they did not have time to find it before cancellation. I hope there some reconsideration about the cancellation, or that another channel or studio picks it up. This show was Netflix-worthy.
Some people don’t have Netflix, like me.
The only shows I have watched in 6 months are Blacklist, Sun Records, and Fox news. We are not the 17-49 demographic. Those kids stay in our basements. We have the money and spend it. A large group connected with this series and discussed it after every segment. Bring it back! Never heard of Nashville or your other shows.
