Cancel your season two plans, fans. There will be no second season of the Sun Records TV show on CMT. The story is ending with one season and has already been removed from the press site. The series is set in Memphis, Tennessee, during the early days of the Civil Rights movement and the birth of rock ‘n’ roll.
A music business drama, Sun Records stars Chad Michael Murray, Billy Gardell, Drake Milligan, Kevin Fonteyne, Christian Lees, and Jonah Lees. The CMT cast also includes: Trevor Donovan, Keir O’Donnell, Jennifer Holland, Margaret Anne Florence, and Kerry D. Holliday.
Deadline reports:
While Nashville — which is half-way though its first season on CMT and fifth overall — has been renewed for a 16-episode sixth season, there are no plans to extend its companion, 8-episode period drama Sun Records, which chronicles the birth of rock ‘n’ roll, CMT’s head of development Jayson Dinsmore told Deadline.
“Originally we had planned for it to be a three-night events, and we morphed the development into a limited-run series,” Dinsmore said of Sun Records, which got a boost by airing behind Nashville. “It always was to be a limited-run series. It did extremely well but there are no current plans for additional episodes. We may revisit. You never know, because it did quite well.”
Sun Records: A Look at the Ratings
The first season of Sun Records averaged a 0.13 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 585,000 viewers. While those ratings seem low in comparison to broadcast network TV series, they fall between the other CMT TV shows we are tracking (i.e. Nashville and Still the King).
What do you think? Did you watch the first season of the Sun Records TV series? Do you think CMT should have cancelled or renewed it for season two?
Just when you get involved in a show they cancel. I think it was one of the best series on tv.
I really enjoyed the series for the most part and would have tuned in every week for season 2, if their had been one. The highlight of the series was when it touched on Elvis Presley and his relationships with his parents and Sam Phillips. Too much was spent on the crooked ways of Tom Parker. Didn’t care too much for the parts with Swaggert and Jerry Lee. Johnny Cash didn’t seem like the real Johnny Cash. Liked Mary and how she seemed to keep the boat afloat for Sam. Pretty good show, but wood have been even better if… Read more »
The series thus far is telling a great story of the history behind some of the greatest performers our nation has produced. Please finish the story and continue with the next season. As a radio DJ for 30 years it just makes no sense to not finish the story.
I want it back too
This was a great show. I would love to see a second season.
I want the show BACK – as does everyone who told me about this show…. MAYBE if you had advertised the show – MORE PEOPLE WOULD WATCH…..!!!!
This was a unique and extremely timely show with great musical scores. Season one was primarily intro to the characters and some great music. Drake Milligan was fantastic. I grew up listening to and watching Elvis and this kid has got all the moves and my insiders tell me that the voice was not dubbed, it was really him. The show should have continued if for no other reason than to showcase his talent. I am extremely disappointed with this show being cancelled. If I hadn’t been told about the show by my inside informant, I would have missed it.… Read more »
I don’t understand why this show is cancelled? It was amazing! I NEVER watched CMT until this show aired. Unless they make a second season I will not be watching this Channel again.
CMT executives have made a huge mistake by cancelling this incredible show. Ratings and money should not be the only determining factor, when you have a nearly perfect combination of story, script, cast and an amazing re-creation of true Americana and music history. PBS has figured this stuff out, but obviously the major networks have not. Where is Ken Burns when you need him. I hope that another network will pick this show up with the same cast, and continue the story. How many millions of Elvis lovers, early rock lovers, and country legend lovers, did not even know this… Read more »
Please consider reinstating this show. We never missed an episode. There are a lot of viewers who grew up with this music and enjoy reliving it. Casting is great and the musical talent amazing. Hoping for a comeback…
You need to bring this show back. I was enjoying a show about the history of sun records. Never missed an episode and my husband and I both were looking forward to season 2
I am so disappointed I was hoping for a second session…. this really upsets me
So disappointed. Really enjoyed this show. After reviewing the new lineups for major networks, I’m not going to be watching much tv in the fall.
My husband and I, including my 17 year old daughter enjoyed this show. We loved the music, the history, and enjoyed learning about the story behind Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Johnny Cash. Please bring season 2. We need to continue the awesome stories of season 1.There are not many entertaining shows out there for us in our late 40’s to watch.
Really disappointing .
Wanted to see the ” million dollar quartet ” in action in the studio
Big mistake CMT
With so much garbage on tv, this was ” historically ” entertaining
