Cancel your season two plans, fans. There will be no second season of the Sun Records TV show on CMT. The story is ending with one season and has already been removed from the press site. The series is set in Memphis, Tennessee, during the early days of the Civil Rights movement and the birth of rock ‘n’ roll.
A music business drama, Sun Records stars Chad Michael Murray, Billy Gardell, Drake Milligan, Kevin Fonteyne, Christian Lees, and Jonah Lees. The CMT cast also includes: Trevor Donovan, Keir O’Donnell, Jennifer Holland, Margaret Anne Florence, and Kerry D. Holliday.
Deadline reports:
While Nashville — which is half-way though its first season on CMT and fifth overall — has been renewed for a 16-episode sixth season, there are no plans to extend its companion, 8-episode period drama Sun Records, which chronicles the birth of rock ‘n’ roll, CMT’s head of development Jayson Dinsmore told Deadline.
“Originally we had planned for it to be a three-night events, and we morphed the development into a limited-run series,” Dinsmore said of Sun Records, which got a boost by airing behind Nashville. “It always was to be a limited-run series. It did extremely well but there are no current plans for additional episodes. We may revisit. You never know, because it did quite well.”
Sun Records: A Look at the Ratings
The first season of Sun Records averaged a 0.13 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 585,000 viewers. While those ratings seem low in comparison to broadcast network TV series, they fall between the other CMT TV shows we are tracking (i.e. Nashville and Still the King).
What do you think? Did you watch the first season of the Sun Records TV series? Do you think CMT should have cancelled or renewed it for season two?
I’m so upset. I looked forward to every new show. I love Chad Michael Zmurray snd the stories of our history. Please bring this back. I’m sure once people start watching it, they will be as addicted as I was!!!
I loved the show. It got off to a very slow start but in the end with Elvis it really got good. Shame on the writers and producers for not doing a better job with extremely talented actors.
I loved the show. Thought it got off to a slow start and just when it was getting good (Elvis) they cancelled the series. Shame on them for not doing this show justice.
Sun Records was solid all eight episodes but really took off in the last four episodes, I was really, really looking forward to at least two more seasons. There is TONS more that could be done. They can check back in on Elvis due to the previous connection. Show the rise of Johnny, Carl and Jerry Lee. How about flashbacks to more of the Blues and R&B artists? Or the new wave of talent like Roy Orbison and then they could go behind closed doors with Charlie Rich. So much more to the story. How about an epilogue after Elvis died… Read more »
I started downloading I-tunes Jerry Lee Lewis music while watching the Sun Records episodes – and not only did I renew a love for that early rock and roll and its history – and the pure talent of JLL, but I even learned a lot more and fell in love with some songs that back then I either had not liked or had not ever really heard. (and I agree like someone else posted – to bring Swaggart into the mix on Sun Records was fantastic also).
My husband and I love this show. Can’t the CMT is cancelling it.
Watching it now that it is available on CMT.com.
We couldn’t watch the series as it wasn’t available in Canada!!!
It should have been!
Loving it….do NOT understand why it wasn’t picked up for a second season!!
Wow. I agree with these comments. With all the trash and nonsense on tv these days you cancel the one good show on. Guess I’ll go back to not watching CMT.
Side note remember when CMT meant country music television same goes for MTV.
Loved this show. Great acting and enjoyed being taken bantonthe fifties. Music was fun and storylines new and interesting.
What a huge disappointment. My husband and I looked forward to this every week. “Sun Records” was one of the BEST depictions of an important time in our unique history, and they end it without finishing the story? So sad. I have no other words – only profound sadness.
I loved it! Very disappointed it won’t continue.
I read the book by Rick Bragg – Jerry Lee Lewis. several scenes were lifted right out of the book or were similar. These artists, JLL, Elvis, Carl and Johnny Cash – not to mention – Ike Turner etc. – the stories are amazing and the talent was incredible. Rock and Roll roots – Rock and Roll history – Stones and Beatles actually copied these guys!! Heck, they even had guest spots with Darius Rucker and Keb Mo on the show!!! what more could this show have? it was EXCELLENT!!!
I really enjoyed Sun Records and was looking foward to another season. I hope you reconsider.
This is very sad! There is so much more to be told!!! RENEW IT!!!!!!!!! There are way too many shows about murders, etc on TV today. This show is historical and actually shows how people WORKED to make their dreams come true. CMT – HUGE MISTAKE!!!! Please reconsider!!!
To say I am disappointed would be an understatement! How can there not be another season when all of those Iconic musicians were just on the verge of changing the world of Rock and Roll? It was nostalgic to the max for me as I was 15 years old when Elvis burst on the scene with Heartbreak Hotel. My husband and I loved this series, Please, Please don’t end it here!
