Cancel your season two plans, fans. There will be no second season of the Sun Records TV show on CMT. The story is ending with one season and has already been removed from the press site. The series is set in Memphis, Tennessee, during the early days of the Civil Rights movement and the birth of rock ‘n’ roll.
A music business drama, Sun Records stars Chad Michael Murray, Billy Gardell, Drake Milligan, Kevin Fonteyne, Christian Lees, and Jonah Lees. The CMT cast also includes: Trevor Donovan, Keir O’Donnell, Jennifer Holland, Margaret Anne Florence, and Kerry D. Holliday.
Deadline reports:
While Nashville — which is half-way though its first season on CMT and fifth overall — has been renewed for a 16-episode sixth season, there are no plans to extend its companion, 8-episode period drama Sun Records, which chronicles the birth of rock ‘n’ roll, CMT’s head of development Jayson Dinsmore told Deadline.
“Originally we had planned for it to be a three-night events, and we morphed the development into a limited-run series,” Dinsmore said of Sun Records, which got a boost by airing behind Nashville. “It always was to be a limited-run series. It did extremely well but there are no current plans for additional episodes. We may revisit. You never know, because it did quite well.”
Sun Records: A Look at the Ratings
The first season of Sun Records averaged a 0.13 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 585,000 viewers. While those ratings seem low in comparison to broadcast network TV series, they fall between the other CMT TV shows we are tracking (i.e. Nashville and Still the King).
What do you think? Did you watch the first season of the Sun Records TV series? Do you think CMT should have cancelled or renewed it for season two?
You just had it on the wrong night and you didn’t promote it well at all. I thought the show was fantastic…..I got others to watch, but like I said….they never even heard of it. YOU HAVE A WINNER HERE……DONT THROW IT AWAY
It was a great show! Please continue season 2!
It was a great show! Please continue a second season!
It was a great Show!! Very interesting and kept me glued to the tube. If yall gave it a different time slot it would have got more viewers…Hello!!
Very sad to hear this. Perhaps Sun Records started a bit slow … maybe too slow for some generations. You need a good background to reference from, but so many people just want the action, regardless of whether they really know why something is happening. However, it had just started rolling and many of the background stories were starting to play out. The cast did very well and played their characters in better. We will miss this show.
Show was awesome!! Please continue! Actors were great. Really loved the first season. I hope CMT will reconsider. If not we need to petition for another network to pick it up.
I loved Sun Records and hope you will reconsider your renewal. Great cast.
This is the only show in TV I watched without having to record and binge. Awaited anxiously every week. Please don’t cancel this show.,
Yes. I watched Sun Records. And I definitely want it to return for season 2 and beyond.
It’s a great show. I enjoyed watching it. Excellent actors. CMT should bring it back.
Really enjoyed the show Was hoping there would be a second season Very disappointed that there won’t be
Should have been on a network station – whoever heard of CMT? The cast was great except for the guy who played Parker. The kid who played Jerry Lee was great – wanted to see him marry his 13 year old cousin. Why wouldn’t NBC, for example, want a show like this over the stupid reruns they show?
What are you guys thinking canceling this show. What a great show. Having grown up as a teenager in the 60’s, for the 1st time I was learning about the history of 50’s music and the rise of Elvis. Big mistake canceling this show. Please bring it back. Please, Please, Please.
Larry I went to Memphis and visited Sun Records and Graceland there a few years back, it was awesome. I then went across into Arkansas and visited Johnny Cash boyhood home……put it on your bucket list my friend…you won’t regret it
Just watched Sun Records. Great show. Hope the producers reconsider a second season.
I love this show and I’m so disappointed that it will not be returning for a second season
