Cancel your season two plans, fans. There will be no second season of the Sun Records TV show on CMT. The story is ending with one season and has already been removed from the press site. The series is set in Memphis, Tennessee, during the early days of the Civil Rights movement and the birth of rock ‘n’ roll.
A music business drama, Sun Records stars Chad Michael Murray, Billy Gardell, Drake Milligan, Kevin Fonteyne, Christian Lees, and Jonah Lees. The CMT cast also includes: Trevor Donovan, Keir O’Donnell, Jennifer Holland, Margaret Anne Florence, and Kerry D. Holliday.
Deadline reports:
While Nashville — which is half-way though its first season on CMT and fifth overall — has been renewed for a 16-episode sixth season, there are no plans to extend its companion, 8-episode period drama Sun Records, which chronicles the birth of rock ‘n’ roll, CMT’s head of development Jayson Dinsmore told Deadline.
“Originally we had planned for it to be a three-night events, and we morphed the development into a limited-run series,” Dinsmore said of Sun Records, which got a boost by airing behind Nashville. “It always was to be a limited-run series. It did extremely well but there are no current plans for additional episodes. We may revisit. You never know, because it did quite well.”
Sun Records: A Look at the Ratings
The first season of Sun Records averaged a 0.13 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 585,000 viewers. While those ratings seem low in comparison to broadcast network TV series, they fall between the other CMT TV shows we are tracking (i.e. Nashville and Still the King).
What do you think? Did you watch the first season of the Sun Records TV series? Do you think CMT should have cancelled or renewed it for season two?
My husband and I love Sun Records. Please give us Season 2!!! We want MORE too!!
I was sad to hear for the young people that played the younger artist especially Elvis were awesome. It would of been fun to see how they progressed to stardom.
Please give us season 2. My husband and I truly love this show! We want more!
I was looking forward to season 2…
This was one of the best shows on TV! I am so disappointed. What a terrible waste of a talented cast. And so many fascinating stories left in limbo. Please reconsider this poor decision.
We need season 2 and more!!!
The show was fantastic! Bring it back! It’s a great story about such an important time in music history. The actors are incredible! Far better than the reality shows! Promote it more!
Please bring it back it was awesome. I am actually mad you canceled it. If it don’t come back I wont ever watch your station again. I had got my whole family interested in it and the were all looking forward to the next season.
I said the same thing. I have always liked CMT but to cancel a show that started the VERY REASON THEY EVEN HAVE THEIR CHANNEL IS A STUPID DECISION!! If sun records don’t come back I will no longer watch CMT!
Both my husband and myself loved this show. It did not get enough advertising. If more people knew it was on they would watch. Reality shows suck, give me Sun Records Please.
PLEAS, PLEASE PLEASE BRING BACK THIS SERIES FOR SEASON 2!!!!! LOVED IT!!!!!! ABSOLUTELY A WONDERFUL SHOW. My family truly enjoyed it and still rewatch the episodes from season one.
How can you end it there with Jerry Lee or Johnny Cash not even getting in the studio yet ??? Just doesn’t make any sense. EVERYBODY loved the show. Please bring it back.
I can’t believe there not bringing it back. It was nice to see how the stars we grew up on got there start
Love this show, I told everyone to watch season 2. Big mistake cancelling sun records.
Please don’t cancel
I enjoyed the series and am disappointed it was cancelled without a proper conclusion.
Wow really… to stop the show in mid form is really sad. To not see the culmination of the pioneers of what music is today is disheartening. There really should be a closure even if it’s a 1 night 2 hour special. Would really like to see the writers take on the greatest musical jam session. Please reconsider Sun records was really cool to watch!
