Cancel your season two plans, fans. There will be no second season of the Sun Records TV show on CMT. The story is ending with one season and has already been removed from the press site. The series is set in Memphis, Tennessee, during the early days of the Civil Rights movement and the birth of rock ‘n’ roll.
A music business drama, Sun Records stars Chad Michael Murray, Billy Gardell, Drake Milligan, Kevin Fonteyne, Christian Lees, and Jonah Lees. The CMT cast also includes: Trevor Donovan, Keir O’Donnell, Jennifer Holland, Margaret Anne Florence, and Kerry D. Holliday.
Deadline reports:
While Nashville — which is half-way though its first season on CMT and fifth overall — has been renewed for a 16-episode sixth season, there are no plans to extend its companion, 8-episode period drama Sun Records, which chronicles the birth of rock ‘n’ roll, CMT’s head of development Jayson Dinsmore told Deadline.
“Originally we had planned for it to be a three-night events, and we morphed the development into a limited-run series,” Dinsmore said of Sun Records, which got a boost by airing behind Nashville. “It always was to be a limited-run series. It did extremely well but there are no current plans for additional episodes. We may revisit. You never know, because it did quite well.”
Sun Records: A Look at the Ratings
The first season of Sun Records averaged a 0.13 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 585,000 viewers. While those ratings seem low in comparison to broadcast network TV series, they fall between the other CMT TV shows we are tracking (i.e. Nashville and Still the King).
What do you think? Did you watch the first season of the Sun Records TV series? Do you think CMT should have cancelled or renewed it for season two?
It needs to be renewed I loved that show
Ridiculous. Half told story. Finish it.
My husband and I enjoyed the series and we were looking forward to Seasen 2. We’re not getting any younger.
I am sorry to hear this. I was looking forward to another season. Much better than a lot of stuff on TV
You have got to bring this show back for another season. We purchased it on Amazon and binge watched it in 2 days!
That is a shame I whole family watch this show, even my son, we had to tape because it comes on late, but never the less great. which they would change their mind
I can’t believe they cancelled this amazing show. It’s saucy and beautifully written. The actors did a great job with each character. The settings, music, everything–excellent. Why does it seem like the most interesting, intelligent, thoughtful shows are always cancelled?! Please bring this series back!!
My husband and I really enjoyed watching this show!! SO disappointed to hear they are cancelling it!! Please don’t!
Loved it couldn’t wait for next season please keep doing the show there are so many avenues with all those legends it willl never get old
I really enjoyed it & was looking forward to season 2! Why don’t networks give new shows more of a chance?
CMT – Sun Records was the first show that I ever watched on CMT. No second season, – it could be my last. That is a shame, because I thought that you really did a great job with it. I graduated high school in 1959, so it was right in my wheelhouse.
Finally a great nostalgic show! Please give us a season 2! LOVE IT!!!!
Please renew,my wife and i favorite show
PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE …RENEW SUN RECORDS. Me and my friends watched it every time. They really did a good job of imitating the original people. You can’t leave us hanging. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE
Never fails. If I like it they will cancel it. One season on the bubble should tell you there needs to be a second.
That’s exactly how I feel! Seems like all the really great shows get cancelled, and that same-old-same-old stay on. cFNK6
