Cancel your season two plans, fans. There will be no second season of the Sun Records TV show on CMT. The story is ending with one season and has already been removed from the press site. The series is set in Memphis, Tennessee, during the early days of the Civil Rights movement and the birth of rock ‘n’ roll.
A music business drama, Sun Records stars Chad Michael Murray, Billy Gardell, Drake Milligan, Kevin Fonteyne, Christian Lees, and Jonah Lees. The CMT cast also includes: Trevor Donovan, Keir O’Donnell, Jennifer Holland, Margaret Anne Florence, and Kerry D. Holliday.
Deadline reports:
While Nashville — which is half-way though its first season on CMT and fifth overall — has been renewed for a 16-episode sixth season, there are no plans to extend its companion, 8-episode period drama Sun Records, which chronicles the birth of rock ‘n’ roll, CMT’s head of development Jayson Dinsmore told Deadline.
“Originally we had planned for it to be a three-night events, and we morphed the development into a limited-run series,” Dinsmore said of Sun Records, which got a boost by airing behind Nashville. “It always was to be a limited-run series. It did extremely well but there are no current plans for additional episodes. We may revisit. You never know, because it did quite well.”
Sun Records: A Look at the Ratings
The first season of Sun Records averaged a 0.13 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 585,000 viewers. While those ratings seem low in comparison to broadcast network TV series, they fall between the other CMT TV shows we are tracking (i.e. Nashville and Still the King).
What do you think? Did you watch the first season of the Sun Records TV series? Do you think CMT should have cancelled or renewed it for season two?
PLEASE RENEW, I LOVED THIS SHOW!!!!
My wife and I really enjoyed the show. We are very sad to see it go. We hope you will reconsider as it was a really cool show.
There was finally a show for ADULTS that my husband and myself could not wait for Thursday night to watch it. It was a really enjoyable show and all the characters were believeable that you really thought it was Elvis. Please renew the show.
This was the first show my wife and I looked forward to watching together. I am sad to see it not renewed. I’ve never really heard of CMT much until this show came out. Maybe another network will pick it up.
shirley iserman I really liked this program
and hope it will be renewed, Music great, acting great.
Why don’t they release an album of the music used on Sun Records, like they do with Nashville? The music is much better than Nashville, and would sell great!
Love Sun Records and not a fan of Nashville. Too soap operaish.
Great series. I have been to this wonderful historic place Where Rock & Roll began in it’s infancy. So much talent came out of there. Love all the unknown actors depicting the LEGENDS. Props and settings are spot on. Sam Phillips two-tone Buick was in the Jackie Robinson bio-pic 42. Please bring this series back so we can relive that moment that occurred on Dec. 4, 1956. Oh, to have been a fly on the wall that day.
I have been to this wonderful historic place. It drips with history. Loved this series and thought the actors were very good in their roles. Rock and Roll in it’s infancy. AND THEY SAID IT WOULDN’T LAST!
This was my new favorite show! I was just thinking about it and wondering when season 2 would start so I googled it and discovered that it was not coming back. Heartbroken! Loved it. Looked forward to it every single week. Please, please bring it back. Jerry Lee and Johnny hadn’t even got their careers started yet!
loved loved loved loved Sun Records!!! PLEASE bring it back
We loved Sun Records. The producers made a gigantic mistake by not putting it on a major station. It was very difficult to see it. Had to get it a day or two later on “TV shows”! Gigantic mistake. Please put it on for another season. It was the best show on TV.
Sun Records was the best Show ofntelevision for the spring season, period. This from a true Television enthusiast. CMT< PLEASE bring this great drama back! Not only was the plot line riveting but the sets and the costumes were great to admire. Don't let this show slip to Amazon. I am boycotting streaming programming. To go that route will require yet more equipment, that I. on a fixed income simply cannot afford.
This was a very enjoyable show to watch! Please put it back on.
Please renew Sun Records. My family loves this show.
