Cancel your season two plans, fans. There will be no second season of the Sun Records TV show on CMT. The story is ending with one season and has already been removed from the press site. The series is set in Memphis, Tennessee, during the early days of the Civil Rights movement and the birth of rock ‘n’ roll.
A music business drama, Sun Records stars Chad Michael Murray, Billy Gardell, Drake Milligan, Kevin Fonteyne, Christian Lees, and Jonah Lees. The CMT cast also includes: Trevor Donovan, Keir O’Donnell, Jennifer Holland, Margaret Anne Florence, and Kerry D. Holliday.
Deadline reports:
While Nashville — which is half-way though its first season on CMT and fifth overall — has been renewed for a 16-episode sixth season, there are no plans to extend its companion, 8-episode period drama Sun Records, which chronicles the birth of rock ‘n’ roll, CMT’s head of development Jayson Dinsmore told Deadline.
“Originally we had planned for it to be a three-night events, and we morphed the development into a limited-run series,” Dinsmore said of Sun Records, which got a boost by airing behind Nashville. “It always was to be a limited-run series. It did extremely well but there are no current plans for additional episodes. We may revisit. You never know, because it did quite well.”
Sun Records: A Look at the Ratings
The first season of Sun Records averaged a 0.13 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 585,000 viewers. While those ratings seem low in comparison to broadcast network TV series, they fall between the other CMT TV shows we are tracking (i.e. Nashville and Still the King).
What do you think? Did you watch the first season of the Sun Records TV series? Do you think CMT should have cancelled or renewed it for season two?
I AM SO UPSET!!! I ABSOLUTELY LOVED THIS SHOW!! THE CASTING WAS SPOT ON AND THE ACTING WAS SUPERB. PLEASE BRING IT BACK, IT WAS THE ONLY SHOW I LOOKED FORWARD TO WATCHING. PLEASE RECONSIDER!!!
I totally agree!!!!
At first we thought it was hokey (and knowing the true history, a bit made up) but we got hooked. Bring it back for another season!
I WOULD LOVE FOR IT TO COME BACK ON, VERY GOOD SHOW
I watched all of season 1 of Sun Records and was looking forward to season 2. Very sad if it doesn’t catch on somwhere.
We Love this Show, we relive a lot of moments watching this show, please bring it back, we loved the history of these great artists. They need to be remembered, and this show did it. Please.
REALLY !! I loved the show ..This show is the true Multi Music History of Legends…Jazz/Blues and Rock and Roll …Its really a shame that CMT has decided to cancel Sun Records .. I am hoping another station picks it up and it will blow the doors down ..Big Mistake CMT
Why won’t there be another season this show was literally the best thing i have ever watched. Why isn’t there another season?I hate this!!
I would like to see Sun Records renewed for Season 2. It is a great show. I think there would be more viewers if the cable company wouldn’t charge to watch Sundance TV. In my area, Spectrum requires a subscription to this TV channel. That’s a big drawback for a lot of people.
RENEW SUN RECORDS OH MY GOD !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! BEST SHOW EVER I WILL WATCH IT EVERY WEEK IM SO MAD
Sometimes, you can’t tell things when something starts off. Often it takes 3 chapters to get into a book. They should go with another season, develop and follow more onto the careers and get it going, then give it closure down a way, since they weren’t looking to do it for a long time, that they were looking for it to be a short series. Give it a little more.
I enjoyed it! Hope you will consider at least one more season, to show how these careers developed
Very disappointed to her Sun Records will not be renewed. My wife and I looked forward to watching it every week. It was our favorite show. Please reconsider!!!
You really polled 18-49 age group for this? I’m 61 and it was slightly before my time. I was fascinated and couldn’t wait for the next episode each week. What a shame you get us ‘invested’ in this great show then rip it away.
loved that show so so much!!!!! please please bring it back on!!@
Really enjoyed it pay xfinity extra 9.95 just to. Get the channel to watch it disappointed it isn’t returning so little to watch these days
Really enjoyed it. And more importantly it was a show my husband enjoyed it. It was a show about the ‘stars’ we grew up with.
