Cancel your season two plans, fans. There will be no second season of the Sun Records TV show on CMT. The story is ending with one season and has already been removed from the press site. The series is set in Memphis, Tennessee, during the early days of the Civil Rights movement and the birth of rock ‘n’ roll.
A music business drama, Sun Records stars Chad Michael Murray, Billy Gardell, Drake Milligan, Kevin Fonteyne, Christian Lees, and Jonah Lees. The CMT cast also includes: Trevor Donovan, Keir O’Donnell, Jennifer Holland, Margaret Anne Florence, and Kerry D. Holliday.
Deadline reports:
While Nashville — which is half-way though its first season on CMT and fifth overall — has been renewed for a 16-episode sixth season, there are no plans to extend its companion, 8-episode period drama Sun Records, which chronicles the birth of rock ‘n’ roll, CMT’s head of development Jayson Dinsmore told Deadline.
“Originally we had planned for it to be a three-night events, and we morphed the development into a limited-run series,” Dinsmore said of Sun Records, which got a boost by airing behind Nashville. “It always was to be a limited-run series. It did extremely well but there are no current plans for additional episodes. We may revisit. You never know, because it did quite well.”
Sun Records: A Look at the Ratings
The first season of Sun Records averaged a 0.13 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 585,000 viewers. While those ratings seem low in comparison to broadcast network TV series, they fall between the other CMT TV shows we are tracking (i.e. Nashville and Still the King).
What do you think? Did you watch the first season of the Sun Records TV series? Do you think CMT should have cancelled or renewed it for season two?
Loved the show still waiting for it to come back. You got to bring it back whole family watching
I really enjoyed the show. I’m very disappointed that it will be not be returning for a second season. I loved hearing about the early days of all these famous musicians.
I really enjoyed this show. Very very disappointed that it will not be having a second season.
I’m upset that I bought season one and did so thinking there was a season 2 as advertised then nothing will never watch CMT again
Please bring Sun Records back. Excellent show. Excellent cast of characters!
They finally put a GOOD show on TV, & then cancel it. They need to take off some of those stupid half hour sitcoms that have got to be the most annoying shows ever!! Especially those ones that the kids have grown into adults, but they still treat them like little kids, please bring Sun Records back!!!!!!
I grew up in Memphis at the time when Elvis and Sam Phillips were taking the world by storm. Knox Phillips was in my high school class. These were people I knew.
The series is true-to-life, and was very enjoyable to watch.
I was looking forward to sseason 2, but it sounds as if that won’t happen.
Shame.
I thought Sun Records was a great show and it should come back for another season, so we can find out what happens with Johnny Cash, and Jerry lee Lewis with their start with Sun Records. Drake Milligan is a friend of mine and I would also like to see the return of Elvis Presley to find out what happens with him.
Please please please continue this series! How can you begin to tell the story and then not tell it all? If you have to cram it all into one more season to see it through to to completion…do that but let the whole story air.
Please bring Sun Records back! It and Nashville are the only reasons I had to watch CMT amd my wife and I love country music. We schedule everything around watching these two shows.
As another comment below says it needed more marketing. I just found out about it by accident.
Renew please!
Most people I know didnt even know about this little gem of a series, that I thoroughly loved. If it was marketed better, the ratings would have been better.
Hope it returns. NASHVILLE is just a soap opera now. Put it on daytime.
Renew it. Best show of early rock & roll. Great music.
We loved Sun Records, was waiting on season 2.
Please bring sun records back ,it’s a great show
