Cancel your season two plans, fans. There will be no second season of the Sun Records TV show on CMT. The story is ending with one season and has already been removed from the press site. The series is set in Memphis, Tennessee, during the early days of the Civil Rights movement and the birth of rock ‘n’ roll.
A music business drama, Sun Records stars Chad Michael Murray, Billy Gardell, Drake Milligan, Kevin Fonteyne, Christian Lees, and Jonah Lees. The CMT cast also includes: Trevor Donovan, Keir O’Donnell, Jennifer Holland, Margaret Anne Florence, and Kerry D. Holliday.
Deadline reports:
While Nashville — which is half-way though its first season on CMT and fifth overall — has been renewed for a 16-episode sixth season, there are no plans to extend its companion, 8-episode period drama Sun Records, which chronicles the birth of rock ‘n’ roll, CMT’s head of development Jayson Dinsmore told Deadline.
“Originally we had planned for it to be a three-night events, and we morphed the development into a limited-run series,” Dinsmore said of Sun Records, which got a boost by airing behind Nashville. “It always was to be a limited-run series. It did extremely well but there are no current plans for additional episodes. We may revisit. You never know, because it did quite well.”
Sun Records: A Look at the Ratings
The first season of Sun Records averaged a 0.13 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 585,000 viewers. While those ratings seem low in comparison to broadcast network TV series, they fall between the other CMT TV shows we are tracking (i.e. Nashville and Still the King).
What do you think? Did you watch the first season of the Sun Records TV series? Do you think CMT should have cancelled or renewed it for season two?
I’m so sad to know that “Sun Records” won’t be returning. I really enjoyed the first season, the actors were quite talented. I hope you will reconsider and bring
What a real shame. This story was honest compelling and you just couldn’t wait for the next week. It gave us the insight to wonderful musicians and people. There was a lot to learn. And it was fun. These folks weren’t born with silver spoons but worked hard for what they had. Please reconsider the choice you made. Bring back Sun Records. Please someone step up.
Sun Records was a great show, I hope the decision to cancel will be reconsidered.
Yes it was really good, disappointed it was canceled
Please reconsider. Just saw Million Dollar Quartet for the 3rd time, which is the reason I watched Sun Records’ 1st season. Loved the story line.
Liked the show was looking forward to another season to bad.
I loved the series. I wish it would have came back.
“Nashville” over “sun records”? Really!! Was looking forward to season 2 of sun records. So disappointed with cmt.
My husband and loved the show, please reconsider bringing the show back, how will we ever know what happened to these kids, lol……seriously, great history of rock n roll.
We heard about “Sun Records” and decided to watch it. We don’t usually watch CMT but we loved the show and would schedule our night to watch it. The Sun records story is a story that needs to be told and is pretty darn compelling. The Sun records story affected our culture in ways that are still being felt today. Hope another network will pick it up and continue it.
I love this show Billy was excellent as Col Parker and the whole staff was great. Why when a show is liked this much does it not make it…Boo
So sad! I was bummed to find this out when trying to find when season 2 started and learned it had not renewed. CMT should bring back!
Bring back Sun Records! Loved it!!!
