Last season, Supergirl aired on CBS but the ratings weren’t strong enough for it to stay on the network. The TV show’s now moved to The CW. Will many viewers follow the superhero series? Will it be a hit in the ratings on the smaller network — even though the numbers will be much lower? Cancelled or renewed for season three? Stay tuned.
Supergirl revolves around Superman’s cousin, Kara Zor-El (Melissa Benoist). As a girl, she survived Krypton’s destruction by being sent to Earth where she was raised as a human. She kept her powers a secret and now, as an adult, works as an assistant at a big city media conglomerate. Kara’s existence becomes known to the world and she is enlisted by a super-secret agency to help protect the citizens from evil forces as Supergirl. The rest of the cast includes Mehcad Brooks, Chyler Leigh, Jeremy Jordan, David Harewood, Floriana Lima, and Chris Wood. Recurring actors this season include Calista Flockhart, Ian Gomez, Katie McGrath, Lynda Carter, Brenda Strong, and Tyler Hoechlin.
The ratings are typically the best indication of a show’s likelihood of staying on the air. The higher the ratings (particularly the 18-49 demo), the better the chances for survival. This chart will be updated as new ratings data becomes available — usually the next day, around 11:30am EST/8:30am PST. Refresh to see the latest.
1/8 update: The CW has renewed the Supergirl TV show for a third season. Details here.
5/23 update: You can see the rest of the latest night’s ratings.
Note: If you’re not seeing the updated charts, please try reloading the page. You can also see them here.
For comparisons: The first season of Supergirl on CBS averaged a 1.68 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 7.68 million total viewers (Live+SD).
Note: These are the Live + Same Day Ratings which include “live” viewing plus delayed DVR viewing, up until 3am local time that same night. Ratings marked with an “*” are the fast affiliate ratings and will be updated with the Live+SD numbers when they are made available. Typically, networks get paid for C+3 ratings which includes DVR viewing within three days of the original airing when commercials are watched. Those numbers are rarely released to the press.
What do you think? Do you like the Supergirl TV series? Do you think it should be cancelled or renewed for a third season?
You know what’s weird.. I’m a dude, and I should totally dig lesbian action. -But in this instance…….. I just don’t. (I think maybe because their “acting” like dudes. -That’s weird.)
Making a mistake should not make us give up, let’s give the show another chance to correct their mistakes by opening their minds to the viewers. I think supergirl will be a great show if they will make the plot more intimidating and add some twist so people will still watch and be excited for every next episode showing, focus more to Supergirl or Kara so the show will be more detailed (cuz some people don’t like having some scenes that are not really related to supergirl’s action story), making the next episode related to previous one, and lastly, always… Read more »
I think the ratings and the msg boards all show how the audience does not like the Liberal Left the show has taken. I watched and love each show live last year, watched the first 1/3 of the show this…then I stopped and have not gone back.
My family wanted a strong woman show to watch, not to have a man and woman having sex in an office copy room or a lesbian relationship pushed on us.
-Other families have stopped watching the show…how clear can that be.
Give us back the SG of Season 1…PLEASE.
I’m not saying I want supergirl cancelled, but season 2 is a far cry from season one in terms of story-line and writing.
definitely cancel. When coming out of the closet is shoved down your throat that is not what I tuned in to watch. Writers and directors who ever they can have their opinions but I’m here to watch a TV show and not have their opinions shoved down my throat. I do not watch the show anymore and feel better now.
cancel it. But I don’t care I’m not watching it
Supergirl was renewed for a 3rd season.
And if they keep the same writers/directors/producers…the ratings will continue to drop.
-Say what you want, but families do not want their kids watching people having sex in coping rooms and lesbian relationships pushed on them.
Families want a strong SG to look up to and not all the other garbage the SG writers have thrown in there.
The ratings for just about every show on TV are dropping. Even stalwarts like NCIS, which has no sex in copy rooms or lesbian relationships.
NCIS dropped 12%, while Supergirl dropped 60%. There is drops, but the bottom fell out of Supergirl.
It is ridiculous to compare ratings from the two seasons because the first season was on CBS. CW isn’t even offered in parts of the country. The show is obviously still profitable enough for Warner to keep it going. If it wasn’t, they’d cancel it.
Who cares if they have a little rump in the xerox room. How ever, pushing the narrative that lesbians have it super hard in the west is so ******* boring to watch. If I want SJW politics I go to youtube. The regressive narrative in Supergirl is down right harmful and I am glad to see their ratings plummet. The 3 other CW shows have moments of liberalism, Supergirl has it as their theme.
Alex used to kick butt, but became whiny and weak after she got together with her lesbian lover. I am ok with the Alex and Maggie relationship if it is brief and if it contributes to the show but most of the time, it’s really dragged on like they want to really make a point of having a gay couple on the show. The show has become too painful to watch because of those two; at times, you feel like you are watching a soap opera and not a superhero show. It’s not that people are homophobes, it’s that whatever… Read more »
All the superhero shows have gay couples. Arrow has Mr. Terrific and his husband. Legends has Sara Lance with various women. Gotham has Penguin. Flash has the Police Captain. Why are you singling Supergirl out? Supergirl would be an anomaly if there wasn’t a gay couple on the show.
Why does it have to be forced into everything even when it doesn’t really have a place in it? Just so it can be inclusive? They try to make Alex and Maggie’s lesbian relationship a big deal in Supergirl, they dive too deep in that relationship, exaggerating every little piece of it to make a point; not even Kara and Mon-el get this relationship time and Kara is the main character. It really does not add anything to the storyline. Trying to be inclusive of everyone and everything has to happen only where and when it makes sense and not… Read more »
And no more sex in the copy room…thank you.
are you talking about that funny make out scene that only happened once. the one you mentioned 5 times already?
None of the shows you mentioned dedicates a third of the show to a relationship, gay or strait, that is not the main character. No one is tuning in to see Alex or Maggie. They want to see Kara. Kara’s relationships are important, Alex’s doesn’t matter at all. Unfortunately, Alex’s relationship with Maggie is a massive part of show. It always takes up at least a quarter of the show, and sometimes a third. This is a superhero show, not soap opera. Mr. Terrific’s sexuality always gets a mention. That’s fine. Sometimes, they will dedicate a few minutes to his… Read more »
Loved Alex in the first season and her relationship with her sister…BRING back S1 SG Please.
Pls get rid of mon-el. he is the SOAP DRAMA, PLS KICK HIM OUT FOREVER
This show has made almost ridiculously bad business decisions and it is showing in the ratings, which have tanked. If it wasn’t for Netflix and a pre-deal, this show would be in real danger of cancellation. They have lost families with the lesbian and “general” sexual themes. Plus, they weirdly decided to move far left with Trump bashing and outright lionizing far left zealots like kooky Warren. As anyone can see with all the leftward comedy talk shows..there is zero ratings in this gambit. All they did was alienate all their family audience and republicans and no new viewers have… Read more »
You could say the same thing for every other show on the CW. Supergirl is still the 2nd highest rated CW show.
I would say that about other shows…and I do not watch them.
I watch The Flash every week and LOVE it. It is a SuperHero show, not a political left show…make it into a “political left show” and watch the rating drop like a rock.
Marvel Comics sales have dropped like a ton of bricks because of the “Political Correctness” they have STUFFED into their comics books…look at the sales stats and the msg boards.
-First time DC has been beating them in decades
Facts and Number…prove a lot.
Nice try. Comic sales have been dropping like a rock for a very long time. There are many reasons, mostly because of the Internet and sites like YouTube I suspect. Fewer young people are getting into buying them.
I feel what people are saying the show ratings are dropping fast. Yes it #2, but the last half of the season it has dropped to #3, which it fell down to .63 (in 18-49) -.1 over whole year. None of the other shows come close to that kind of drop (on the CW). So if that trend continues you can see where it will be in trouble for next year. What ever is causing the drop, (and I am not debating that here) it’s not good for the show. Others drops/gains in last half of season. FL , -.071… Read more »
Agreed. While I really liked the show at first, the non-stop overt Bashing our President with their EXTREME liberal bias means, for me and my family, we’ll watch reruns of Stargate SG-1
I’m a 61 year old liberal who doesn’t believe that homosexuality/lesbianism should be shoved down anyone’s throat but I’m not in a position to judge the actions of others, just like I don’t want others to judge me! The small amount of same-sex action on this show (though it makes me slightly uncomfortable) is no reason to cancel it! If parents don’t want their kids to see what’s happening on this show, put it on at a later time but please don’t cancel it! After all, we will not be the ones to pass the ultimate judgement! KEEP THE SHOW… Read more »
Overall a great show but with a weak/slow middle of the second season. Getting too heavy on the romance/sex stuff, even my daughter doesn’t watch adventure/superhero shows for that stuff and finds the Flash’s story lines more engaging. But the main cast is awesome (even without Callista) and it is not a big leap to get out of the rut it seems to be in. We still watch every week.
I like Supergirl! Sure it’s a quirky show, but the CW is doing well with the DC Universe as a whole. Arrow is tormented, dark and calculated, The Legends are blasting through tie as a band of rag tag wanderers. Flash is as impulsive as he is fast, and struggles with emotional decisions in retrospect. Supergirl, contrary to the quintessential superhero persona is gifted with powers rendering her practically indestructible, but ironically builds her courage from a place of vulnerability. Expanding on the thread for Supergirl. Clearly the writing initially revolved around the personalities of Kara, Cat and Alex. That… Read more »
Supergirl has already been renewed for a season 3.
It’s all relative. Supergirl is still the 2nd highest rated CW show, both in 18-49 and total viewers.
I’m sorry to say that all the ingredients are here to make this better. the spring break hurt ratings badly. going to Christmas everyone was on board. but keep treating the watchers like idiots and writing really bad stories. Hijacking characters from other properties…. did I mention the bad writing. we deserve better and at least 5 seasons with a more thought output bub’s
My problem with this show is last season it was a family show in a family time slot. This season it’s got women kissing women & some soft porn seen of a guy getting it on in the copy room with a secretary. What is this show about. I can’t watch it anymore with my kids. This is a super hero show. Let them be heros to kids, not some kind of sex statement on how to push the boundaries of a tv show. And we wonder why are kids are growing up with no morals. The more we let… Read more »
Supergirl should be better than everyone else, not just constantly telling everyone she is. I’ve watched the show since ep. 1 and had really high hopes but the writing is just **** and all the SWJ crap is totally unnecessary.
There are other shows with gay relationship that resonates with viewers. The show’s partisan’s agenda is definitely grating, but they seemed to have stepped away from that a bit. SG is tanking because it’s a terrible product. The writing is bad, the dialogue is clunky, the villains are all moustache swirling cardboard caricatures, and almost nothing unfolds logically and organically. Consider the latest episode. Some high school friend emerges as a criminal mastermind who can resist the Manhunter’s mind scan and he knows just about everyone’s secret. What? How did Peter know where his son kept Alex? Is he a… Read more »
The martian manhunter thing wasnt explained but the rest was. He knew kara was supergirl from high school and knew she’s in national city. His father probably knows someplace they stayed at or something. I mean his father knows his son. Rick was stalking them for a long time. It was a great episode. Stop looking too much into it
I think the show is good and it should get away from the lesbian and politics don’t challenge it’s way to controversial at this time also they need to be less predictable and more like interesting we need to want to see the next episode not already know what’s going to happen once we see the promo.
