During the Winter TCAs, Supernatural super-fan and president of The CW, Mark Pedowitz, addressed whether the littlest network would cancel or renew its Supernatural TV show for a 14th season and talked about the potential spin-off, Wayward Sisters. Pedowitz recently extended his contract with The CW, which seems like good news for Sam and Dean Winchester (Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles). Find out what he had to say about the original series and its spin-off.
A CW horror drama which is currently in its 13th season, Supernatural is still a top three show for the network, so it is unlikely to be cancelled. In addition to Padelecki and Ackles, the cast includes Misha Collins, Mark Pellegrino, and Alexander Calvert. Samantha Smith, Kim Rhodes, Briana Buckmaster, Kathryn Newton, Katherine Ramdeen, Loretta Devine, Clark Backo, Yadira Guevara-Prip, Christian Keyes, Chelsey Reist, Keith Szarabajka, and Jeffrey Vincent Parise are among the guest stars in the 13th season.
CW President Talks About the Future of Supernatural and the Spin-off Wayward Sisters
Deadline reports on the comments Pedowitz made, this past weekend, at the Winter TCAs:
One of the sturdiest CW ratings performer — linearly and digitally — has been veteran Supernatural, currently in its 13th season. It’s become a TCA tradition to check on the future prospects of the series, which has repeatedly defied expectations.
Noting that he and his CW team are not ready to announce renewal decisions yet, “next year would be Supernatural‘s 300th episode which is remarkable,” Pedowitz told Deadline. “That show will go on as long as it keeps going, the boys (stars Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles) keep doing it and the ratings keep holding.”
This season, Supernatural is also tasked with introducing a potential spin-off, Wayward Sisters, starring the original series’ standout Kim Rhodes in an episode that airs a week from Thursday.
“I’ve seen it, I like it but the fans determine,” Pedowitz said. While the first attempt at a Supernatural spin-off, Bloodlines, “did not work at all, this one has an opportunity to work,” he said. “Nothing is perfect but the real question is whether fans will go watch it if the boys aren’t in it. I don’t know but it works, the characters work, Kathryn Newton is a real star, the actress who plays Donna (Briana Buckmaster) is hilarious.”
Supernatural: A Look at the Ratings
The 13th season of Supernatural is averaging a 0.61 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 1.79 million viewers. While those numbers may seem low at first glance, they’re great for The CW, particularly for a show which has been on the air this long.
Compared to season 12, Supernatural is up by 1% and up by 7% and ranks second and third, respectively, out of CW TV shows. Outright cancellation seems unimaginable, unless something changes in a huge (and terrible) way.
Supernatural: Where Will It End?
Padalecki, Ackles, and co-showrunner Robert Singer have previously said they would like to take the TV series to 300 episodes. The backdoor pilot for Wayward Sister, which debuts when the show returns from its midwinter hiatus on January 18th, is episode number 13.13 and will be the 277th episode, overall. The 300th episode would be the 13th episode of season 14. Whether the stars and producers see that number as a goal along the road so far, or the end of the hunt for the Brothers Winchester, remains to be seen. When we know more, you will, too.
What do you think? Do you still like the Supernatural TV series? Should it be cancelled or renewed for season 14? How long would you like to see it run? Let us know, below.
Love it, don’t cancel.
The Way to 300 …. seems Supernatural to me !
I love Supernatural so much it’s has become my number one favorite show of all time. I would love it to continue as long as Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles still enjoy protraying Sam and Dean Winchester. When it does end which I hope isn’t anytime soon it goes out in a blaze of glory. The show still continues to produce amazing fresh storylines, spooky unpredictable twists and turns keeping me on the edge of my seat. Many seasons are left with incredible cliffhangers which drives you crazy during the summer hiatuses, and what makes Supernatural so unique and rare… Read more »
So we’ll said!
I love this show. Dean and Sam still to this day make me laugh and at times make me cry. This show has everything in it. I have 3 sons. One passed away less than a year ago, he was being robbed then stabbed. It’s the hardest thing a mom could ever face. But Through it all I see my boys in Dean and Sam. I hope you renew for the 14th season. I’ve watch this show since the very first show and haven’t missed any of them. I also record all the daytime ones. Thank God for DVRs
Been watching since series premier love the newcomer jack!! My favorite show for 13 seasons i know it will end but i hope that doesn’t happen anytime soon.
Supernatural is my favorite show on TV. That show has gotten me through some tough times in my life. I actually liked the first spin off show, Bloodlines when it aired. I think fans would have liked it better if they had not been concerned that it meant Supernatural would be cancelled and this show would replace it. It would be great to see Wayward Sisters be successful. But please do not take the boys away!
Love Supernatural! Been a fan since day one and would Love to see it run till the boys are old and grey!
I am not a TV watcher [sorry] but, I will say Supernatural has been the only show that I watch consistently. I have shared and spread my addiction to the Winchester Brothers to so many people. I own the DVD sets and have watched the full series probably over 100 times. [no exaggeration] when my music is turned off the only thing i watch is Supernatural. I think also because the actors are so down to earth and real. I admire their balance career, family, fun etc. I will be very sad when and if the final episode comes. I… Read more »
