When it comes to scripted TV shows, Syfy has had both hits and flops. Which of the current series will be cancelled or renewed for another season?
Syfy execs consider a lot of data when deciding whether to renew or cancel a TV series, but ratings are a major factor.
Scripted Syfy Network shows listed: 12 Monkeys, Aftermath, The Ark, Astrid & Lilly Save the World, Bitten, Blood Drive, Channel Zero, Childhood’s End, Chucky, Continuum, Dark Matter, Day of the Dead, Deadly Class, Defiance, Dominion, The Expanse, Ghost Wars, Happy!, Haven, Helix, Hunters, Incorporated, Killjoys, Krypton, Lost Girl, The Magicians, Nightflyers, Olympus, Reginald the Vampire, Resident Alien, Superstition, SurrealEstate, Vagrant Queen, Van Helsing, Wynonna Earp, and Z Nation.
Last updated: Most recent ratings added for The Ark.
Note: If you’re not seeing the updated charts, please try reloading the page. You can also view them here and here.
A couple of notes about these charts:
These figures are updated automatically as new ratings are released (usually a day or so after the broadcasts). The averages are based on the final national numbers (live plus same day viewing). For technical reasons, I have to resort them manually so feel free to let me know if I missed something.
The demo numbers, which are typically most important to the broadcast networks, aren’t quite as vital to cable channels because their audiences are usually much smaller. Demo numbers are typically reported using the 10ths decimal place (2.4, for example). In the averages, I’m using an extra decimal for easier ranking.
What do you think? Are you surprised by any of the ratings? Which shows should be doing better? Which one do you think will be cancelled next?
I think ZNation should continue, it’s story line at least has a point as to where it’s going. The dead series has no point, just 60-90 minutes of slaughter to the poor victims of a dead virus. No wonder there are so many “idiots” in the world deciding upon themselves to play god by slaughtering innocent citizens in any country.
I watch 12 monkeys, killjoys, expanse, but my favorite by far is Dark Matter. I bought the blu ray set and watched it at leadt five times before season 2 premiere.and the season 2 premiere was awesome. Luckily for me it is currently the top rated syfy show.
dark matter is a reboot of blakes seven , which ran on tv from the seventies into the 80’s blakes seven of course had no cgi. just good stories and such. the effects were models on strings basically. as it was from the bbc. and they had less money than the u.s stations by far. still I thought it was a great show and it did well internationally. we saw it on pbs. it took them 35 years of so to redo it. with todays money and effects of course.
Five’s real name was revealed to be Emily Kolburn; she has a record for truancy, trespassing, larceny, vandalism, and fraud. How did Jace Corso get to One? And what motivated him to kill One there and then? Is this another part of the conspiracy at play? I don’t want to think One is dead but that scene goes against like everything that gives the possibility of him surviving.First objective of a prisoner: escape. Two, Three, and Four seemed to be hard at work at putting that into practice. The Android is totally awesome. I love how she just absolutely *owned* that GA… Read more »
I thought they would bring him back from that alternate universe and turn him into a good guy.
Wow, the 12 monkeys hate is strong here. Also, why is it that only two of the top five shows are renewed?
Dark Matter and Killjoys will both return for their second seasons on Friday, July 1. Killjoys starts things off at 9pm and continues its tales of outergalactic bounty hunters Dutch, Johnny, and D’avin. In Season 2, the gang will try to unlock the secrets of Khylen and may find threats in the Reclamation Apprehension Center.Following Killjoys at 10pm will be the return of Dark Matter, which follows a group of amnesiac people who don’t know how they ended up on a derelict spaceship. This season, they’ll explore their identities further and get caught up in the middle of a intergalactic… Read more »
Both series will be very fortunate if they get a third season. Their story lines are inline to lose the majority of their SyFy audience, but will of course appeal to a minority, however that isn’t enough to keep spending the money to keep it on the air beyond the second season, but maybe they’ll strike a deal for a third season cause SyFy has little else to put on air. In fact their ratings are lower now than some others which were already cancelled.
12 Monkeys is one of the worst shows. The acting was outright high school play level garbage. Shame on all of the producers responsible for wasting people’s time and lowering the collective IQ of humankind.
Defiance (cancelled), Dominion (cancelled), Haven (cancelled), Helix (cancelled). Low rated 12 Monkeys (renewed) I hate favoritism and injustice !!! Shame, disgrace, ignominy, dishonor, infamy, opprobrium, outrage, attaint.
I feel that it was more of a “well, we have cancelled just about and we can go into next year with five returning shows so which ones will give us the most goodwill with the critics”
It has very little to do with critics, and the studios know that, as critics are not entirely honest in their analysis if they see some personal benefit in giving a positive review. In fact critics are seldom accurate, but fans changing the channel are always right, because it’s a free will choice. And we’re talking about the majority of loyal fans, not the minority which can’t recognize a poorly scripted series that turns off fans. The ratings tell studios who’s watching and who isn’t. Once the advertisers lose interest in spending millions to place their adds on the series,… Read more »
True enough. In this case it has the most stable in ratings of the shows up for renewal at the time. 12 Monkeys is likely to return next season at its current level while the others dropped considerably making them riskier choices as a second season can see a sizeable drop in viewership.
There are also sometimes deals for a second season written into the contract before the series even gets approval, and this is kept from the general public as it was with Stargate Universe. It’s a marketing ploy to try and interest viewers in watching a series when they hear it get’s renewed. The producers of Stargate Universe bragged about being renewed for a second season and they knew in advance they had been given two seasons from the very beginning. Sci-fi fans aren’t naive…they can search these things out and it looks even worse for the studio and producers when… Read more »
Hell Mervyon, you have an answer for everything.
We need season 2 of Wynonna Earp! I enjoyed every minute of the series! History has never been Sexier, thanks Doc!
I am NOT a TV person at all. 12 Monkeys is the only show I make sure to catch EVERY. SINGLE. WEEK! Please do not cancel it! You are SYFY. Stay true to that! This is the most interesting science fiction well, anything, I’ve ever watched! Please please please keep!
First and foremost, this show is awful. The acting is horrible, the production is horrible, and above all the little tricks that every TV show does are so obvious in this show it’s embarrassing. Why is NBC Universal so afraid to truly invest in a worthwhile sci fi/fantasy series?
I love the show 12 Monkeys! God forbid you have to actually invest in watching every episode to really know/comprehend whats going on in a show these days.. These idiots like Gringo want to be able to watch any episode and it not matter to the whole.. Its sad we need MORE shows like 12 Monkeys that dont run along the same mundane boring thoughtless scripts!! Ones you need to think an episode or three back to realize whats happening
12 Monkeys is a joke, a laughable attempt to turn a classic movie into television. Poor acting, poor script writing. Seeing as Cole was supposed to die, prolonging the series is just ridiculous.
Horrible on so many levels: – Story – Script – Acting – Editing. Plague destroys earth, convict sent back in time to prevent disaster. The story is so thin it must’ve been written on 1ply toilet paper. When you are ripping off ridiculous time travel paradox notions from Timecop, ie – something from the future cannot touch itself in the past without annihilating it.The consistency paradox occurs when a future event prevents the occurrence of a past event that was partly or entirely the cause of the future event, thereby preventing the future event from occurring, thus creating a contradiction.… Read more »
A causal loop is a paradox of time travel that occurs when a future event is the cause of a past event, which in turn is the cause of the future event. Both events then exist in spacetime, but their origin cannot be determined. A causal loop may involve an event, a person or object, or information. A causal loop is also known as a boot-strap paradox, predestination paradox or ontological paradox in fiction. This show is basically a show about the characters living their dull boring daily life.
12 monkeys – let it be 1000 season. I will not watch. This TV show – does not exist.(for me)
the only way syfy, will get good ratings again is to bring back SGC.!! or SGA.!! they were both cancelled with 1.37. ratings 18 to 49. hey syfy it takes money to make money.!
It’s 2016, most sci-fi fans don’t watch live anymore, they watch dvr and online. Bringing up ratings from years ago, is pretty pointless
all true. but look at syfy ratings.? all they can due is try.!!
They won’t and can’t bring back Stargate SG1 or SGA because the producers dumped them in favor of Stargate Universe, which they claimed would be better than both predecessors ….. hahaha…I think we know how that turned out.
They didn’t understand what the science fiction fans wanted to watch and proved it with the storyline for SGU. It was horrible and if they hadn’t signed a two year contract in the beginning (even though they tried to deceive fans into thinking it was renewed for the second season) it wouldn’t have even lasted one season!
I happen to like to like Wynonna Earp! I thinks it’s a fun show to watch. The concept it different and strange, but I like strange. I also like Z Nation. I hope both shows are renewed. It’s kind of like with Firefly. That show was cancelled and it has o e of the biggest cult followings to date. The problem is that studio heads for getting the that people invest in following a TV show. The character development. The ones we love, and the ones we love to hate. Then to just end a show and leave fans hanging!… Read more »
Based off the viewership and 18-49 demos in the above charts, I’d guess that Wynonna Earp and Olympus are in serious danger of being cancelled. In the meantime, 12 Monkeys and Hunters SHOULD be cancelled, since they’re at the bottom of the charts. Hunters especially, since it got booted to the dreaded 12 am ET midnight slot for new episodes. For me, I didn’t really enjoy any of these series, so I’m not sad to see any of them go.
Olympus is a Canadian/British fantasy television series that premiered on Super Channel in Canada.(Original network – Super Channel, not Syfy) I think we can probably assume Olympus has been cancelled since we’re well past the year anniversary (and more then year) of the premiere date of the first season.
12 monkeys is a fantastic show. I hope they don’t cancel it. I think hunters is doomed though. it’s hated by critics some of whom called it torture porn! Its ok , but 12 monkeys is great.
Defiance is the best show in the world plz bring it back
Defiance was never able to reach the majority of science fiction fans and was lucky to get three seasons. I understand you liked it, but I’m sorry, there is no possible way it will ever be brought back! Best to move on with your hopes for great science fiction!
Wynonna Earp
Was hoping for a good show demons guns and etc. Forced myself to watch the all episodes horrible acting and very childish. And for some reason all the characters act like idiots.
12 Monkeys
Almost unwatchable. Not worth the electricity it takes to run the TV for the hour it is on.
Hunters
It looks rather cheap, boring characters & cast, and the writing isn’t good at all. After only a few minutes you know that sadly it’s a waste of time.
I had this opinion about Wynonna Earp when I watched the first two episodes. Specially about the acting skills of the main character. BUT, after that and as the story was growing, I really think these things improves a lot. The actors are not espectacular, but no bad at all, the girl who plays Wynonna improves a lot too. And most of the characters are very charismatic.
Plus, the sense of humor is one of the positive points of this show.
Wynonna Earp is a fantastic show I don’t know what your problem it a great show with lots of twists and turns
Totally agree…wynonna is a great show with a season finale that was huge. Can’t wait till they renew and we can find out about Waverly!
JAMES R. you hit the nail on the head.!!!
I agree about Wynonna. Not my cup of tea. Hunters is ok, it started out very rough, but I’ve enjoyed some of the later episodes. I think its initial poor landing played havoc with its general vote of confidence though so I doubt it’ll survive.
How can a show that I’ve tried several times to watch get renewed but one of the best SYFY show they’ve had on for years be cancelled! Magicians is one of the worst shows I’ve ever tried to watch, as a matter of fact I tried to watch it like 3 different times and it was so boring I couldn’t stand it. There are several shows being renewed that should never have been even given a pilot episode, but the 1 that I look forward to every week is being cancelled. They AWAYS cancel the best shows, like Lie To… Read more »
The Magicians provided enough evidence that it has enough talent and ambition to keep the surprises coming. New favorite show! It’s kind of like X-men. Each student at the university has different powers, and everyone is trying to understand how to use them.
I agree with you there. My husband really likes The Magicians but it puts me to sleep! I’m a huge fan of 12 Monkeys but I don’t have a good feeling about its future.
