Tonight marks the last episode of The Event for 2010. NBC plans to relaunch the series in three months, on February 28th, after letting their new series The Cape have the timeslot. Is it a risky move? Not really. Ultimately, they don’t have much choice.
The Event follows Sean Walker (Jason Ritter), a young man who’s investigating the mysterious disappearance of his girlfriend. He slowly begins to uncover the biggest cover-up in the history of the United States. Others in the cast include Sarah Roemer, Laura Innes, Ian Anthony Dale, Scott Patterson, Clifton Collins Jr., Taylor Cole, Lisa Vidal, Bill Smitrovich, Zeljko Ivanek, and Blair Underwood.
The series debuted in September to decent ratings with a 3.6 in the 18-49 demo and 10.88 million total viewers. That’s a healthy sampling but, considering all of the promotion that NBC put behind it, the programmers were likely disappointed by its third place rank in the timeslot.
While some viewers clearly love the show, more than half who watched the first episode have already lost interest. The Event has been losing viewers, sometimes as much as 15 or 20% in one week, and to date has never shown an increase week-to-week in the demo. The most recent installment garnered just a 1.7 rating in the demo and 5.19 million viewers.
You can blame the network for not doing a better job of promoting The Event but clearly there’s a problem with the series when people who already watch don’t feel compelled to return week after week.
Will this February “relaunch” help? Based on recent TV history, the answer is no. Just look at V and FlashForward. People who were interested in The Event have either already tried it and stuck around or given up on it. Those who haven’t watched previously are very unlikely to give a try because they assume that they’ve missed too much backstory already. On top of that, when the show returns, the ratings will likely be lower than what they are now. By the time The Event returns in February, many casual fans will have already gotten involved with other shows.
The one thing that The Event has going for it is the fact that it’s on NBC. The peacock network continues to struggle and The Event is currently the fifth most-watched scripted program on the network. If things go as expected, it will drop much lower on the list next year. Still, with the exception of The CW, NBC is the only network that would consider giving this series more time. They’ll surely let all 22 episodes air.
The Event returns on Monday, February 28th and will have 12 more original episodes to air at that point. Will there be a second season? We’ll have to wait and see but hopefully the producers will plan ahead and not end the show without any resolution.
What do you think? Does The Event have a chance for survival? What could NBC do to save this show? Anything?

Definietely want to see what happens to the aliens
I don’t like the “never-ending” types of shows. I like a program that has a begining, a story and a conclusion! Does anyone remember “The Fugitive”?
you know I hate it when I get hook on a show then all of a sudden it has been cut from it time slot move to another time or just sent to the butcher block and gone for good please bring it back
I love this show! I really hope it doesn’t get canceled. It has helped to fill the void since Lost ended.
This show will end suddenly with no resolution just as with FlashForward and now Stargate Universe. There are too many long arc shows that dont survive long enough to complete the arc. This genre must stop. If I bought a book and the last chapter was missing I would take it back for a full refund! No TV show must ever be commissioned without the final episode being made along with the pilot.
I LOVE THIS SHOW .KEPT IT ON ROSE
My husband and I loved this program. I am on line now looking for the return date, I am so happy its coming back on.
what they have to do to increase ratings is up the average IQ of the TV viewing audience. The Event is a seriously smart show with plenty of action, but I think the back and forth in time is the only way to tell it while getting to the compelling part. That lack of focus by the narration needs the audience needs to focus on what is happening.
Please bring it back so we can at least cap this first season. I think it’s a great show. You have to dedicate your time to it to really grasp it. The chronology of the story line can get confusing but if you stay dedicated, it’s what makes the show so unique. There are some really great actors and some really bad ones. I won’t say which ones are the bad ones b/c I would hope NBC could state the obvious. I truly hope the show sticks around.
My husband and I both love The Event and have been waiting for its return. I am glad to hear it is coming back but oh to have to wait until Feb 28th!
I was disappointed when they moved The Event for another tv serie, could you please putting back. The Cap? just the name is funny.
My husband and I faithly watched the series right from the beginning and loved it. It’s almost a cross between 24 and X files. We didn’t know what happen to the show since
the last show. We are happpy to find out that it will be back on NBC 28 Feb 11. Hope it continues next fall.
I can’t wait till this show comes on again. I was really disappointed when I stopped seeing it on Mondays. I was afraid that they moved it or changed the time. I am a fan of this show now, and always will. I hope the best for this show because every Monday, I get ready for the Event.
I love this show too and I will be so disappointed if I don’t get to see how it all turns out!! Can’t wait until February 28! I’ve already set my DVR!!
