Is there still a future for The Kids Are Alright? Recently, star Mary McCormack spoke with The Los Angeles Times about her efforts to save the cancelled ABC TV show.
Set in the 1970s, the sitcom centers on the Clearys, an Irish-Catholic family living on the outskirts of Los Angeles. The cast includes Michael Cudlitz, Mary McCormack, Sam Straley, Caleb Foote, Sawyer Barth, Christopher Paul Richards, Jack Gore, Andy Walken, and Santino Barnard.
In the interview, McCormack says she thinks ABC cancelled The Kids Are Alright before its time:
It feels too short. It’s hard to get something really funny and nuanced and moving, and I thought our show was all those things. There’s a lot of stuff I don’t understand about how shows find new homes, but you do hear about it. And I guess because you hear about it, your fans think there’s hope. There are just so many networks now — networks I’ve never heard of. So I’m still holding out a little hope that someone will look at us and see we’re like the already housebroken cute shelter pet that needs someone to adopt them.”
What do you think? Did you watch The Kids Are Alright? Would you have watched a second season?
I loved this show. On the surface, it appeared to be over the top, but as the season continued, the writers began showing the underlying feelings. At first, the parenting and kids are stereotyped but as individual stories begin, we see love and support within the antics. I am disappointed it was cancelled. But, as the writers reveal cleverness and intelligence, I could see the network would let us down again by cancelling a show that may not appeal to the lowest common denominator.
Sad another great show lost, why? I loved it.
We totally love this show. It’s funny as all ‘get out’ and very well written. Very true to real life also. as we were raised very much like this. We miss this show greatly ; sad & angry [:-(
One of the funniest I’ve seen in a long time. Bring it back. Enough with the reality shows.
I loved this show. I watch very little tv. This was one of two new shows i watched this year. I really hope another network picks it up.
Bring it back!
Loved the show. ABC should have given it a chance.
Boo. We were looking forward to season 2. Very funny show.
I loved this show, and would love to see it come back…if it can’t, how about a show just about Joey Cleary…he’s a hoot. He should be cast in the next Stranger Things edition as Steve Harrington’s younger brother.
I enjoyed it for a while, then mid-season they went into the Catholic-bashing cliche EVERY WEEK until I just tuned out. Shame, since it was an otherwise enjoyable show.
Great, funny, feelgood show, I will miss it. so disappointed in ABC for not giving it a chance; it probably will affect watching sitcoms on this network.
My family and I loved this show!! So clever and funny… sad it isn’t coming back 🙁
It was a terrific show, smart, funny, edgy — I never understood why it was cancelled. Doing so was a mistake.
You answered your own question. Smart and edgy dot make it on network TV.
This cancellation is why folks are leaving the “networks” in droves… this beloved show was the one thing everyone agreed on last holidays… and that’s an amazing space for any show occupy today. Silent Gen, Boomers, and us Gen X plus all our kids… I loved it & thought at first it’s cuz we grew up in the backyard this show was set in but even the fams in the middle of the country were right there with us. Disappointed in ABC for sure!
We are SO SAD & disappointed!!! That was our new favorite show last year!!! It’s a lot better than The Goldbergs that keeps returning.
Ugh, PLEASSSE RENEW FOR ANOTHER SEASON!!
All of us 70’s kids could relate to every story every week!! Hilarious!! Heidi T. Houston, Texas
