Is there still a future for The Kids Are Alright? Recently, star Mary McCormack spoke with The Los Angeles Times about her efforts to save the cancelled ABC TV show.
Set in the 1970s, the sitcom centers on the Clearys, an Irish-Catholic family living on the outskirts of Los Angeles. The cast includes Michael Cudlitz, Mary McCormack, Sam Straley, Caleb Foote, Sawyer Barth, Christopher Paul Richards, Jack Gore, Andy Walken, and Santino Barnard.
In the interview, McCormack says she thinks ABC cancelled The Kids Are Alright before its time:
It feels too short. It’s hard to get something really funny and nuanced and moving, and I thought our show was all those things. There’s a lot of stuff I don’t understand about how shows find new homes, but you do hear about it. And I guess because you hear about it, your fans think there’s hope. There are just so many networks now — networks I’ve never heard of. So I’m still holding out a little hope that someone will look at us and see we’re like the already housebroken cute shelter pet that needs someone to adopt them.”
What do you think? Did you watch The Kids Are Alright? Would you have watched a second season?
It would be a wonderful edition to any streaming network. It’s not ABC comedy network ready, because it’s better written, cast and acted than the garbage they kept for the fall line-up.
You have a weird system at ABC where they kept lower rated shows and gave TKAA the boot.
Our whole family loves this show. From our 20-somethings all the way to retired age.
Best cast hands down, every single actor was perfect and talented. Hilarious and great writing.
It needs to come back. Come on ABC fix your mistake.

This show is amazing and brilliant in every way! The cast, writing, directing – spot on!! Such a shame that this gem was not renewed and has yet to be picked up! Unbelievable – really! Finally a show that connects with every age group – and it doesn’t need a season to ‘build’ the characters and it gets squashed! Sad!
By far THE best comedy show to come along in many years. Each week delivered with superb writing and acting by the entire ensemble! Great family fun with loads of laughs for everyone. It was enjoyed by many of my colleagues and was the show we discussed and laughed about all week long. A large number of us made sure we tuned in each week. PLEASE…..someone find a home for this series so that it can continue!
My wife and I were disappointed to see this show cancelled. We would love to see show brought back.
Save this show!!! So funny and accurately depicts families (especially moms) of the 70s!
Please please please bring this incredible show back.
Great show! But network tv generally sucks. It was tool well written to stay
Such a good show! It was a bad move to cancel this well written show.
I watched the first season and I would love to watch a second season. My family is so disappointed that it got cancelled. We looked forward to watching this every Tuesday night.
I grew up in the 80, it was nice seeing how people lived in the 70s. All the actors are so talented they deserve another chance.
Please keep this show going. It was brilliant in every way, and better than anything ABC has had in years.
The Kids Are Alright was the best family comedy on TV last season. It was so well written, well cast and so relatable. It was the one and only show that my entire family watched together. That says A LOT! We all hope it gets saved very soon because it would not be the same without all of the original cast. #savethekidsarealright!
This show is great! Especially for those of us who grew up in the 70’s! Why cancel???
We LOVE this show! We even DVR’d it to make sure we didn’t miss any episodes. We were/are upset that ABC would cancel one of the funniest shows on TV today. It seems ABC is hooked on having tons of “-ish” programs. I watch none of them. I hope that if ABC does not have the wisdom to return to show to its line up, “The Kids Are Alright” can find another home. It worked for my other favorite series, “Longmire,” when A&E took its highest rated show off the air. It was on Netflix for three more successful seasons,… Read more »
The Kids Are Alright should have never been cancelled! Definitely would watch season two and more. Please bring it back!!!
I’m totally baffled as to why the show was canceled. Everyone I know looked forward, each week, to seeing the next episode. Please bring it back.
