Well, there’s one singing competition that won’t be back next season. The Sing-Off has been cancelled after three seasons on the NBC.
Hosted by Nick Lachey, this TV series seeks to find the most-talented a capella singing group in America. Judges have included Ben Folds, Shawn Stockman, Nicole Scherzinger, and Sara Bareilles. The judges decide who advances to the finale and the final winners are determined by viewer votes. The champs take home a Sony recording contract and $200,000.
The Sing-Off began in December 2009 as a short-run series with just four episodes. It did reasonably well — averaging a 2.3 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 6.9 million viewers — so the peacock network brought it back for season two.
It returned in December 2010, expanded to five episodes, and the ratings rose 26% — to an average of a 2.9 in the demo with 8.6 million viewers.

NBC decided to take another chance and give The Sing-Off a two-hour timeslot on the fall schedule with 11 episodes. That gamble didn’t pay off and the ratings were much lower. By the end of the season, The Sing-Off averaged a 1.5 in the demo with 4.56 million.
On our NBC Ratings Report Card, which measures the relative demo performance of TV shows on the network, The Sing-Off has an “C-” grade. The network has now cancelled the show.
NBC could have brought it back for another limited run, perhaps over the summer or in December but were likely hesitant to flood their schedule with yet another singing/talent competition. America’s Got Talent has been very successful for them over the summer months and NBC plans to run two cycles of The Voice next season. There just wasn’t a place on the schedule for The Sing-Off any longer.
What do you think? Do you think NBC should have kept The Sing-Off, perhaps run it in December? Are you sorry to hear that it’s been cancelled and won’;t be back for a fourth season?
Please bring the sing off back I really enjoyed watching this show there was nothing else like it.
I’m really disappointed to hear that the Sing Off has been cancelled. I decided to look it up (after having a conversation with my Dad last week, about not seeing it at the beginning of the year). This one absolutely one of my FAVORITE shows because it involved REAL musical talend. VERY sad to hear the news, considering the other garbage currently on television!
Bring back the show I really miss it and make it really fun and different teens have nice vocals and are good singer and then u denied it!!!!! For really and I think you should make America’s got talent not 2 hours and only 1 hour show so that the shows can split it evenly. P.s bring back the sing off!!!
NBC made the worst decision ever! You have an innovative Reality series like the sing off that introduces Acapella to world like its never known and then you cancel it. Capella has been a musical art form for a long time that was considered not popular, challenging, even nerdy and you give it to the world in a different light that gives everyone an opportunity to appreciate it, people a chance to thinks its cool, popularize it on college campuses and then you cancel it. Bad Form NBC. Bring it Back!!!!

So the sing off didn’t do well season three… did you ever think that it was because there were groups that made it too far in the competition when they didn’t sound good enough? The Sing off is one of the best shows i have ever seen on TV and would be a smart idea to at least test it again. So smaller time slots but a longer season so that all the groups can still have a chance to perform. Personally i love Pentatonix, Delilah, Dartmouth aires, and Vocal point. What those young men and woman could do with… Read more »
Sing Off was, by far, one of the most enjoyable music shows on TV. Far better than your standard fare such as American Idol, etc. A differenty flavor, entirely. Music as it is meant to be heard. Such a relief to not have loud orchestras overplaying the artist(s). It may not have been properly advertised or promoted, hence the low interest.
PLZ!! Bring back this show my wife and I love it.
Wtf…
The Voice & America’s Got Talent don’t have a Capella (I think). The Sing Off brought a whole new level of singing that I actually liked. Please bring it back. I shared it in my music class and everyone loved it and was hoping for a season 4. Just one more season and then it can be over (Yeah right).
What?! I cant believe that the sing-off was cancelled!
I will truly miss The Sing Off. The best music competition on TV in my opinion. Perhaps waiting a year for more accapella groups to sign up will ensure another fabulous show. Please bring it back!
SAD, SAD, SAD! Best musical show on TV! We were soo looking forward to season 4. Please bring it back!
wow… that is bad news. the sing off is actually the only singing competition show i liked. American Idol and the Voice wasn’t as good as singoff, but i guss it is hard to get enough good Capella groups to join this show because it is way harder than others shows to get people to join the competition as the standers is quite high.
the sing off was far out!! and so much better than the solo shows/ contests which are so ego driven. the judges are warm and instructive and know what they are talking about. please re consider and do another series. the talent is inspiring and the love of music so real,
Please bring it back!! I am SO tired of American Idol and the one singer with 20 minutes of commercials. The Sing Off was a GREAT singing show and my family and I miss it. True singing talent on a true singing show!! Reality!!
