Though there was talk that the Wayward Pines TV series could return for a second season, FOX seems to have killed that idea. The network has revealed that next week’s installment will be the last one — the series finale.
On Wayward Pines, Secret Service Agent Ethan Burke (Matt Dillon) drives to the bucolic town of Wayward Pines, in search of two missing federal agents. One was a former partner and they once had an affair. A truck slams into his car, he wakes up in the local hospital, and things start to get really strange. The cast of this thriller series also includes Howard, Melissa Leo, Carla Gugino, Toby Jones, Shannyn Sossamon, Charlie Tahan, Reed Diamond, Juliette Lewis, and Tim Griffin.
The series is currently FOX’s second-best performer of the summer, beating out shows like So You Think You Can Dance, Bullseye, Boom!, Are You Smarter Tahn a 5th Grader?, and animated Golan the Insatiable. Wayward Pines is averaging a 1.09 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 3.79 million viewers.
Based on the season’s performance, FOX execs were considering renewing the show for another year — most likely with a different cast and characters in the same mixed-up world. However, last night’s promo clearly notes that next week’s episode marks the end of the show. Take a look:
For what it’s worth, back in January executive producer M. Night Shyamalan was open to a second season but was cautiously optimistic. He said, “If the opportunity is there. We won’t do it unless it’s organically and creatively correct.”
Executive producer and showrunner Chad Hodge recently told TVLine, “The promise that we’ve been making — which is that there’s a beginning, middle and end in these 10 episodes — is a real promise and we deliver on it. Could there be a possibility of a Season 2? Sure, of course, and you’ll see a window to that, but it also is a complete ending as it is.”
What do you think? Do you like the Wayward Pines TV show? Would you have watched a second season?
7/24 update: Though FOX advertised the last episode as the “series finale”, talks of a second season continue.

Really Fox? You’re choosing to cancel this amazing show?! This is exactly why I can’t support Fox; consistent poor decision making. Who makes these decisions?
It would make sense for the show to end where it’s supposed to. The trilogy of books that it was based on ends in the same place. They would have to go beyond what the author Blake Crouch had created. Sometimes, a good thing has to end where it ends. It was well done and a pretty true interpretation of the books. I’m pleasantly surprised that M. Night Shyamalan was able to pull this one off!
I’m not surprised. This is standard for Fox when it comes to Scifi shows with entertaining intellect. They always introduce these type of shows then hit the cancel button without ever giving them a real chance. But if its some mind numbing reality show it would get full support no matter what.
I totally agree.
They’re not “cancelling the show without giving it a chance”. The show was always intended to be a 10 episode event series, and the ten episode arc completely covers the events of the books. They toyed with the idea of doing a second series with original contents, yes, but they decided against it. That isn’t “cancelling” it, it’s delivering exactly what was promised.
What a disappointment. No season 2??? The issue was with marketing this show, no one knows about it but once they do, they love it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Poor decision to cancel it.
very disappointed no season 2 I really enjoy the series very very disappointedwe need season 2
Love the show. Please bring it back. Like the cast. This show and Last Ship are the only shows I look forward to
This is a great show what the hell is the matter with the powers that be. DON”T CANCEL
I love this show! Please make more episodes! I watch faithfully.
Why is it all good shows are cancelled and the one that are renewed are crap…
I definitely would have watched a Season 2. . . and 3. Well-conceived mythology, excellent acting and direction. Matt Dillon and rest of cast (so many recognizable and talented actors) owned their characters. Fox should stick with this show and it will build. I watched because of word of mouth and have recommended the show. First they cancelled “My So-Called Life” -— then “Firefly.” Now “Wayward Pines” What are the execs thinking?
Very disappointed that this show is being cancelled. There are so few good shows on TV and
this is definitely one good show. Hopefully the producers will reconsider their decision and
renew for season 2.
The series “Wayward Pines,” is young and as a result hold great potential for huge success. I truly found the plot unique and entertaining. Totally unpredictable which is not easily accomplished today. If fox pulled this program it would be at great financial loss for all involved. This series is still finding it’s audience. I suggest Fox go forward with season 2 and during the ensuing break other people like myself will visit the first season becoming hungry for more and as a result, Wow! Big audience for season 2. In the mean time “address and perfect.”
Loving this show! But as long as they wrap everything up with the last episode, I’ll be happy. 🙂 I’ve been watching it on Hulu, and I’ve been HOOKED! Was trying to draw it out, since I had a bad feeling (the shows I like *never* end up lasting very long), but still, very much worth it! Now wondering what they left out that was in the books. 🙂
Great stuff!
GREAT show! Only show I will watch in the summer. They need to have the cast back for season 2.
So disappointed there will be no season 2!! This show is so good, reconsider and renew!
