Eileen’s pursuit of the truth won’t continue into the 2023-24 network season. ABC has cancelled Alaska Daily, so there won’t be a second season.
A drama series, the Alaska Daily TV show stars Hilary Swank, Jeff Perry, Matt Malloy, Meredith Holzman, Grace Dove, Pablo Castelblanco, Ami Park, and Craig Frank. Eileen Fitzgerald (Swank) is an award-winning investigative journalist and high-powered newspaper reporter in New York. Her reporting methods and abrasive personality are called into question after a high-profile story blows up in her face, and Eileen loses her job. Her former mentor, Stanley Cornik (Perry), approaches her about making a big move, and she goes to work for a struggling downsized Anchorage newspaper, the Daily Alaskan. Grudgingly, Eileen teams up with a young local reporter named Roz Friendly (Dove). Together, they begin investigating the murders of a group of indigenous women. Eileen is on a journey to find personal and professional redemption in a new locale, across the country, and in a very different world.
Airing on Thursday nights, the first season of Alaska Daily averaged a 0.23 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 2.84 million viewers in the live+same day ratings (including DVR playback through 3:00 AM). It was one of ABC’s lowest-rated scripted series in the demo and a middle-of-the-road performer in total viewers, when compared to other shows on the network.
The show nearly doubled its viewership in the live+7 day ratings, but that was apparently not good enough to secure a second-season renewal.
The first season of 11 episodes finished airing on March 30th.
What do you think? Have you enjoyed watching the Alaska Daily TV series on ABC? Are you disappointed this show wasn’t renewed for a second season? Were you expecting a cancellation?
#soShortSighted.
Hopefully picked up elsewhere. ABC will be sorry they passed
Very disappointed Alaska Daily was not given a chance. A show like this dealing with important real life issues deserves at least 2 seasons to develop an audience.
Very disappointed
Was one of the best shows in recent years. Dealt with actual, real-life events. Very disappointed ABC didn’t let the viewers find it.
I am so stunned that Alaska Daily was cancelled. This show was riveting, great writing, great storyline, fabulous actors…it had everything! I so wish another network would have picked it up. Now I understand why I hardly watch ABC anymore!
ABC needs a new development team.
Alaska Daily is one of the best written and performed series on the tube. Shame on them.
Some other network should have been smart enough to pick-up this series. But that might really be asking too much.
Really liked the show, very disappointed there won’t be another season.
Just got through binge-watching. Thought it was awesome and want more. Can not believe there won’t be a second season. It is so hard to find good shows. There is to much garbage out there. This was refreshing but now I am sad. Is it being cancelled because it sheds to much light on problems?
I’m extremely disappointed ABC cancelled this show with such an important topic
Very disappointed with the cancellation of this show! It was well written, great actors. Love the Story line as being very current. Will have to look elsewhere for good tv!
It’s so nice to see a show covering 1- the issue of truthful news being reported and 2- covering real life issues afflicting first nation’s people. This show was refreshing. I loved this show! Bring it back please!
Who wants to watch a well written tv show, with a great known actress in the lead, that sheds light on the plight of America’s indigenous population? I DO! ABC’s decision is making very easy to turn away from network tv altogether.
This show is so interesting and informative. I have been waiting for it to come back. Maybe it was to honest for some. This cancellation raises a lot of concerns. Please bring it back!!!!!
I loved this series. Was looking forward to next season. Well built story with strong female characters.
We are stunned and heartbroken by this cancellantion notice. Who and how do we lobby? I live in New Mexico and the issue of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women is a national crisis and national disgrace. Beyond that, Alaska Daily is an amazing drama with outstanding plots, writing and acting. ABC joins the shame for cancelling.
Well said Rev. Holly.
